Thomo has already come out and said he's happy to take a 'pay-cut' and I am sure there are others in our team willing to do so.

But will DCE?

Remember when the sh-t hit the fan about his apparent refusal to train unless he had an increase that alienated him from the Stewart's, Choc , Foran and Mattai?

So DCE, what are you prepared to do for the club as it's captain?

Yes, you probably have massive mortgages to pay on your investment properties and your share portfolio has diminished substantially of late. What are you prepared to do as a leader of our club to help those almost on the basic wage in the club and without a job and those support staff who have been let go and now have to join the Centrelink queue?

How are you going to lead this club by setting an example to others who will also have to compromise their lifestyle as many in the community have had to do?

And not just DCE, but all the players on huge salaries in our club. What are they prepared to compromise for other players in this unprecedented time so the lower paid players can at least afford to feed, clothe and care for their families?

I'm not just pointing the finger at DCE but all the players, How strong is the unity really? How much do they really care about each other or is it just a 'dog eat dog' culture at Manly?

He will have too for Manlys long term survival. The only good to come out of the NRL struggling Is that current player contracts will need to be re-worked under a reduced cap if the NRL survives in the future that way we can bring his salary down.

A question. The players are paid from within the salary cap which is paid by the NRL (not the club). So if players agree to take a pay cut then either the money is saved by the NRL or the NRL don't have to contribute as much to the cap (depending on when it's paid).

So if players take a pay cut does that increase the 'kitty' that the NRL has to support financially troubled clubs in a general sense (not player/club specific)?

It appears that the NRL gets progress payments from the TV rights. Do the clubs get progress payments for salary cap payments to the players?

Most likely scenario, all players agreeing to a percentage cut whilst no games. Apparently the AFL players are offering a 50% pay cut whilst not playing, the AFL suggesting 75%.

The salary cap is $9,900,000
Pay every player in the top 30 the minimum that they can be signed on for, what is that at now around $100,000.
That would put play payments at $3,000,000.

DCE losing 80% of his $1,000,000 he can still live comfortable but a player taking a 80% cut on minimum wage would struggle.

That's the whole issue. The NRL effectively underwrite player salaries. So if they have no income they can't pay the players. All the other income (sponsorship, merchandise, gate takings, membership etc) pays for the rest of the club "expenses".

If the players don't take a pay cut who do they think is going to pay their wages ? The individual clubs would have no hope of meeting that wage bill. The NRL don't have any money if they don't have a game to sell, there is no kitty, that's the crux of the issue.

Marquee players will have earned more in 4-5 years than the average Australian earns in a lifetime. They'll be OK

Really they’ll all have no choice.

Don’t think one will get any advantage over the other.

Reckon they’ll all be offered about 80-90k per year , they won’t starve and that’s important .

All loans will have a holiday clause , they’ll get through it.

I think this is where donkeys/roosters/bunnies players will have the advantage of those third party/brown paper bags.

Good evening @rmd
Will DCE take a pay cut you ask ?

The Great 007 DCE who has a license to thrill
does not get out of bed for less than one million dollars a year ;)

If the money isn't there, he doesn't get a choice really.

We are not privy to the proper financial situation of the NRL, Manlys situation, commercial arrangements, etc...

There is also the players union who are negotiating.

In the end, they may end up in the same position or worse.

It can literally be a case of everyone take a cut and hopefully we start up as soon as we can to earn some cash and continue.... or

Take your salaries up to the point where you get stood down as there is nothing left to pay you.

You would think if the later is a reality, the players would take a cut.

I know guys like DCE are more likely to weather this, but they would be feeling the stress too.

For some players, your career is short lived and earning potential plummets after footy.

Agreed that most players should be better placed than a large chunk of Aust, but still stressful.

He will and they all will. It will be based on a % depending on the value of the contract. Remember they have been paid since November so they already have a good 5 months of full pay so he and the others will still be on good money for the year considering they only "worked" for 5 months

I think you may find that there is a possibility of an act of God clause which could nullify all contracts whilst the game is suspended.
Players have already received five months of their full pay, so if they accept a fifty percent cut on the remaining seven months, if the game is still suspended , then their full annual contract has only been reduced by just over 25 percent.
However the broadcasting rights landscape has probably now changed for the worse and it remains to be seen that the NRL can continue to support the clubs to the extent it has previously, so all players salaries will have to be scaled back going forward

Why not a deferred payment scheme?

The players agree to a 50% reduction in their wages until COVID is over, then are paid the remaining 50% once the game is back up & running.

It would leave a lot less in the trough for the parasites at the top & their superbowl junkets, but hey, in hard times everyone has to make sacrifices.
