SEA Eagles recruit Jack Gosiewski has arrived at the club with a point to prove after living through a rugby league player’s worst nightmare last year.
The 23-year-old edge forward was sidelined for virtually all of the 2017 season with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
“I had surgery on my knee in January and came back from that in round 20 and then hyper extended my knee and was out for the rest of the season,” he said.
“So I played one game.
“I want to prove a point to myself that I belong at this level of football.
“And if I stay injury free I believe I will go well and hopefully can play most of the season.”
And Gosiewski appreciates the vote of confidence from the Sea Eagles to give him a new footballing home.
“I was off contract and Baz (coach Trent Barrett) has given me a chance and I am happy to be here,” he said.
Gosiewski was attracted to the Sea Eagles because he liked what he saw on the northern beaches.
“I thought there will be an opportunity for me and there is a good young squad,” he said. “
“I want to be in the round one squad so I’d say that is my goal.”
Gosiewski has already had a boost since joining the Sea Eagles when he was named in Brad Fittler’s Emerging Blues squad along with Manly team mates Brian Kelly, Lachlan Croker and Luke Metcalf.
“I was very surprised but excited,” he said.
“I didn’t play any junior reps or anything like that.”
Gosiewski and his three Sea Eagles team mates will go into camp on Saturday at ANZ Stadium where they will receive specialist coaching from Andrew Johns, Craig Fitzgibbon, Matt King, Mark O’Meley, Anthony Minichiello and Fittler.
“These players will be the backbone of the NSW Origin team going forward,” the incoming Blues coach Fittler said.
“They all have a big future,”
And the camp is an experience that the footballer who hails from Mullumbimby on the NSW north coast is really looking forward to.
“It will be good to just go in and learn a bit about their culture and what they expect as a state,” Gosiewski said.
