ASADA chief executive Aurora Andruska announces impending retirement as AFL and NRL judgement day looms.

Australia's top anti-doping official has announced her impending retirement, with the report into doping allegations in the AFL and NRL set to be delivered in the next two months.

Aurora Andruska, the chief executive of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA), will leave her position at the conclusion of her four-year term in May.

Andruska has overseen the investigation launched on what was dubbed by her predecessor as ASADA boss, Richard Ings, as the "darkest day in Australian sport" in February 2013.

Earlier this month, the federal government appointed former Federal Court judge Garry Downes to review the investigations centring on AFL club Essendon and NRL club Cronulla and report to Andruska.

It was not clear whether that would see the conclusion of the investigation or if any infraction notices would then be issued to players.

Federal Sports Minister Peter Dutton paid tribute to Andruska on Tuesday ahead of her departure.

"Ms Andruska has had a long and distinguished career in the public service," Dutton said in a statement.

"I would like to thank her for her dedication and service over 37 years and wish her well for future endeavours."

Canberra NRL player Sandor Earl remains the only player to have received an infraction notice from the investigations.

He admitted to using a banned peptide while playing for Penrith in 2011 and faces a ban of up to four years.

That quote by the former head of ASADA (sacked a few years earlier) is still the catch-cry of those who don't care which substances our athletes are pressured to put into their bodies.

If the announcement of widespread illegal peptide use in pro sports and links with organised crime was a bit ho hum ... exactly which day would you nominate as worse for Australian sport?

There must be countless candidates!
