Just before 6pm on 18 May 2007, despite being disqualified from driving, Carney drove a ute belonging to teammate Steve Irwin. Police began to pursue the vehicle after noticing the wheels of the ute momentarily lose traction as it went around a corner. Despite the police car having its sirens sounding and lights flashing, Carney refused to stop his speeding vehicle, leading police on a high-speed chase through the back streets of the Canberra suburb of Bruce. After turning into a dead-end street, Carney stopped the car and fled the scene on foot, leaving his mate Steve Irwin in the passenger seat. Irwin told police Carney was the driver. Police went to Carney's house, but he was not there, instead the police found 23 year old room mate Tom Witcombe who claimed he had not seen Carney since almost 3pm that afternoon. The next morning, Carney turned himself in.
On Tuesday, 12 June 2007, Carney appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court, pleading guilty to the charges of failing to stop when directed by police, negligent driving and driving while disqualified.[1] He escaped jail, but the Court placed Carney on a 12-month good behaviour order, banned him from driving until 2012,[2] and sentenced him to 200 hours of community service.[3] The Magistrate warned Carney that if he commits another offence he would \"undoubtedly go to jail.\"[1] Controversially, the Raiders club sacked Irwin (who was not charged with any offences) over the incident but retained Carney.[4]
On 20 July 2008, it was alleged Carney urinated on a man at a Canberra nightclub, who had to undertake counseling to overcome the trauma of the incident.[7] Carney was suspended from participating in league matches and training while the allegations were investigated. The complaint was withdrawn two days later but Carney remained suspended for the round 21 match against the Gold Coast Titans.
The nightclub allegations sparked renewed interest in Carney's 2007 negligent driving charges when Steve Irwin claimed that Carney was intoxicated whilst driving at the time of the 2007 incident but he had been pressured by the club to remain quiet in an attempt to avoid a jail sentence for Carney.[9]
The incident led to the club imposing an ultimatum on Carney which included a five point plan, whereby Carney would have to stand down from training and matches for the rest of the season; go on an alcohol ban until the end of 2012; undergo counselling; complete a community service program; and pay a $20,000 fine.
The NRL threatened to de-register his contract for two years if Carney did not accept this plan in order to protect the Raiders from losing him to another club.[10]
Carney asked for a variation of the plan where he could avoid points one and two. This was unacceptable to the club board. On 7 August 2008, the Canberra club sacked Carney and terminated his $400,000 a season contract. Carney was de-registered by the NRL and would not be eligible to compete in the competition until 2010
In February 2009, Carney went on a vandalism spree in Goulburn, jumping on a car bonnet and damaging the entrance to a Fone Zone store. He received a 12-month suspended jail sentence, and was ordered to undertake alcohol counselling
Carney was assaulted by four men in Atherton at 3 am on Sunday, 10 May 2009. One of those men was North Queensland Cowboys Player Nick Slyney
It was reported on the 6th of December that Carney had injured himself after falling from his balcony while trying to gain entry to the building after locking himself out. He suffered no serious injuries
On the 26th of February 2011 it was reported that Carney will be facing a low-range drink driving charge. The Sydney Roosters have confirmed that they will stand by him through this latest indiscretion.[

The 100k fine to Manly was ostensibly for the shoddy organisation of the season launch. The 4 match suspension of Stewart was a personal punishment to him for 'his conduct', and his conduct in no way warranted suspension. Gallop simply believed libellous fictions published in the media.

He put himself under pressure by his decision to disregard expert advice not to base an ad campaign around individual players. Under that pressure he buckled.

Gallop's response to the Tele column is predictably angry but not at all convincing. What will be his response to Des's comments? He will be getting angrier and angrier. Hopefully he won't be sleeping very well these days.

is Todd carney blowing 0.52 better or worse cause he's a p plater? Is it better that Watmough punched or just shoved the bloke?

My take on this - Carney broke the law by blowing .052 as a P plate driver who should have a ZERO blood alcohol limit. He would have even been charged if he was on his full licence as the legal limit is 0.05! He was caught AGAIN.
Watmough didn't get charged for the alleged incident and it was based on rumours. Sure there was an altercation between him and the sponsor but no hard evidence to back it up!
Stewart was cleared by the courts and always maintained his innocence.
I do think Manly should have been fined for the debacle that was the season launch BUT Stewart should not have been suspended. This is my biggest issue with Gallop's handling of the Carney case - no suspension and leaving him in the ads!

Carney got the punishment he would have deserved if it was his first offense. But it wasn't. He is a repeat offender who was told by the NRL when he signed with the Roosters that he was on his last chance. What's the point of saying he was on his last chance if he clearly wasn't? Brett Stewart on the other hand, was punished for supposedly being drunk at the season launch but we all know the punishment was a knee jerk reaction from Gallop for the allegations made by the girl. Gallop assumed Brett was guilty of something without knowing any facts. The NRL hasn't learnt from the Brett Stewart situation at all. They are simply going soft on a player who plays for the team that Nick Politis is involved with.

If Gallop wants to go down the 'Intoxicated' route under Qld RSA(Responsible Service of Alcohol) rules a patron is technically intoxicated as soon as they take their first mouthful of alcohol (NSW RSA rules are generally the same but a lot tougher).

So legally a bar person can cut you off after the first drink.

Gallop how in the BLUE HELL do you sleep at night !!!!!!!!! CANNOT beleive the SH%T that comes out ot his mouth. What a JOKE!!!!

On another article Gallop says that Carney was suspended for a year, WRONG! he was sacked and the NRL wouldn't recognise a contract (the NRL must be thanking it's lucky stars that the Players Union isn't very strong or it could got very interesting with this) and it shouldn't have stopped him from lining up for another club.

Gallops response to club bias claim in today's Telegraph:

"The two cases are very different. The Carney incident involved a largely inadvertent act last Saturday morning".
"Stewarts conduct was at a season launch which the club itself admitted to handling badly. Despite this no action was taken by Manly."
"We look at each case on it's merits and in it's own context. In other words, we make our decisions impartially, with even handedness, across all clubs, as a primary motivation. "
"Any suggestion that these decisions are infected by a desire to please someone else is incorrect, malicious and defamatory. We have maintained that position over many years and while we are not immune from criticism, we totally reject any suggestion of bias".

Yeah, they were different Gallop one was proven innocent and the other broke the law as IS GUILTY .

But who ended up with the 4 week suspension, the clubs 100k fine and a player 300k out of pocket?

Gallop you're a scumbag and should not be allowed to be part of new rugby league ero once the IC has been set up.

Gallop, you're arguments are full of more holes than Swiss cheese. Just go, and don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out.

Andy1972.
Manly Forever.

Gallop: \"We look at each case on it's merits and in it's own context.\"

I seem to recall the NRL saying at the time that part of the scale of Brett's punishment was because he was the face of the game. In other words, if he was a nobody the media wouldn't have created such a storm and there would have been less need to be seen to be punishing him. The Tony Williams drink drive penalty is a good example to compare to.

Now let's not forget that Brett didn't ask to be the face of the game for 2009 and he wasn't paid a cent to appear in the 2009 NRL commercial. Even though he wasn't paid for being the face of the game, his punishment was harsher as he was the face of the game.

Now we move to Carney. The 2010 Dally M medal winner and, like Brett at the stat of 2009, a very high profile face in the game. Rothfield says it well enough as to Carney's past. But then Gallop says in his explanation that Carney (still over 0.5 from the night before) "inadvertently" got into a car, Hullo?? He was on a ZERO alcohol licence! If he was on 0.5 like the rest of us that excuse might have held weight, but not a driver on his Ps and not when a court told him not to do it again or would risk jail.

Gallop also seems to argue in his explanation that Carney's prior punishment of 12 months out of the game somehow counted towards the apparently light punishment given to him this week instead of copping what Brett did.

I'm sorry but Gallop has not done well here.

I hope the judge that threatened Carney with jail time if he gets into trouble again is the judge at his next hearing. Hopefully he will be true to his word and give him jail time. I hope so if for no other reason than to embarrass Gallop and the NRL.

Mate i dont give a **** about what Carneys done its plain for all to see hes got issues.Gallop seems to be the only one with **** in his ears and eyes.I suppose hes got a very high quality lifestyle that he has to make sure he keeps going aye.I wonder if i can stick my hand up his ass and get him to say things that i want him to say.Oh thats right im not News Ltd.

THE relationship between Manly and the NRL has sunk to an all-time low over inconsistencies in the Brett Stewart-Todd Carney bad behaviour cases.

Good on Lowe. Now all I want is for any Manly rep on any board to dis Gallop.
I've heard Geoff Bellew's name being bandied about. How would others feel about having him there?

I'm glad that the club is standing up to Gallop and his ridiculous treatment of Brett. I just hope they keep the pressure on until Gallop either apologises or offers a plausible explanation as to why there is such a gross inconsistency. I'll be interested to see if the Benji Marshall case is swept under the carpet like Carneys was.

To be honest I am sick of reading about it. We all know Stewart was suspended for the allegations levelled at him. Time to move on as nothing will come of the constant sniping at the NRL.

I for one intend to maintain the rage against Gallup until he is gone!

Iagree Garts. Sweeping under the carpet is letting Gallop of the hook. Maintain the rage. Get in the ear of our administrators so they don't vote for the clown.
