So it is no suprise to anyone here that often after a loss silvertails proclaims the world is ending and often after a win we are marching towards a premiership.

I've always been an advocate of a bit more of a balanced view so wanted to try a thread where weekly regardless of a win or loss we look at 3 positives and three negatives from the game (maybe posted the day after when emotions have died down)

Hopefully it is something we can get going and please don't jump on board if after a loss or a win you going to go the cheap joke and list 1.nothing 2.nada 3.zilch in the opposing category

So after last night.

POSITIVES
1. Youth staking their claim - Olakau'Atu was immense imo and is a must in the 17 moving forward. I am also enjoying Funa's development and think he should replace Taufua next week.
2. DCE - No doubt coming back from lockdown DCE was out of form but I think the last 2-3 weeks he has really picked up and is looking a lot better. Long may it continue as we need him.
3. The brave 1300 - I think I heard the crowd was around 1300. Good on them as the weather was horrific.....they deserved a win but sadly didn't get one.

NEGATIVES
1. Taufua - I love Jorge, I really do. He brings a lot of heart and soul to the club and he does have his strengths. Sadly though his weaknesses are being constantly exploited by other teams and I think it is time he is dropped for Funa.
2. Dummy half service especially Croker - It really cant be underestimated how much we miss Fainu. So many times last night in attacking areas DCE and Cust were reaching back or up to catch balls from the dummy half especially when Croker was on....not sure the solution here as we are thin but it needs to improve.
3. Schoolboy errors - It would be easy to blame the weather last night but it has been happening from the restart. We may be short on troops but the basics shouldnt be lacking.

Okay have at it all, 3 of each, what stood out to you?

Well written post. I agree with all however we need our coach to give the youn ones a go. If des does not get them in soon way may lose them. Positive next year if we get these guys in the team with DCE playing well and injury free i believe we can take the title. The negative would be des not experimenting with the team and bit getting a decent 9. We are putting to much faith in Fainu

I agree with Jorge... he has always been suspect with kicks but made up for it in the past with big metres and barge over tries... he now no longer does this and his use in the team i can assume is only to mentor the younger Pacific islands players..

Also i don't think we have won a game in the rain for about 6 seasons! No footy smarts/ game plan to accommodate.

Lastly i like the majority would love to see hoppa get a run.. but for anyone who has had an acl injury, you know it's hard enough to come back and gain confidence over time... he has had no regular games (or experience against the older guys) so it would be a huge ask to just throw him in there and I'm assuming that's why Des is holding him back... never say never though.. he has big wraps on him so he may handle it given the chance

Positives were 1) haumole 80 mins wow
2) Not panicking at 0-16.
3) our halves played strongly in attack and defence

negatives: 1) kicking the ball on the 4th just before half time to give the warriors a full set of 6. One more slow hit up and then into touch would have done it.

2) weddell seal’s flipper hands in the second half. Although well done passing to funa for a try in 1st half

3) Jerky, panicked, too high tempo dummy half play from Levi in his second stint.

I thought our completion rate was like 83 percent or something alike. Pretty good considering the weather. We had enough ball in areas to capitalise but we didn't have the execution. If we eradicate that first 20 min where we were still in the sheds. We win

Negative number 4; Our mental toughness, especially when defending on our line or after a mistake is absolutely disgraceful. As soon as something goes against us, it's heads down.

Positive:
Those brave supporters who watched - some even sat - on The Hill in atrocious conditions. They deserved better than the dross our team displayed. (I was at the ground but fortunately I'd secured entry to a lounge where the food and beverages were of a far higher class than the on-field action)
Negative:
The coaching. I believed Des and his fellow tacticians have turned our troops into mindless autotrons, not unlike military leaders are able to get sane troops to continue to charge at enemy lines without any realistic chance of success. Apart from DCE and Cust, just how many of our players actually THINK? They follow a 'game plan' and rarely trust themselves to chance their arm. In other words they have been programmed to fear making mistakes rather than rewarded for showing enterprise. Des' mantra is ball control. We completed at 83% and yet look insipid in attack most of that time. No. What we need is some players showing initiative.
I'll give you a perfect example:
We had six kick-offs last night. On every occasion Sandwiched kicked semi-deep to the left corner. In every instance the result was the same. Now, if he'd been encouraged to try something different perhaps we'd have got the ball back; a short kick, a grubber in wet conditions could find the sideline or lead to a Worriers handling error, or a mid-kick that bounced unpredictably....

We have some capable players and others that are not so capable
A Good balanced team is like a good balanced healthy diet
Our team is sick at the moment ...... Sick of losing
We need to inject our team with a vitamin intake of speed , strength and skill

Simply, we need SPEED and more aggression all over the park. We need to hurt teams (legally) in defence.
One of my favourites and he was not paid $800k to play
He played with Passion to Win !!!
When the going got tough . He just got tougher

Starting from the positive side, the following players are the ONLY ones worth keeping (contract considerations aside), and including those injured;

Turbo
Suli
Funa
Cust
DCE
Jake
AFB
Taupau
Paseka
Okalau'atu

If only we could use these 10 as the core of a new team.

(I haven't forgotten the usual 1,2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, + bench or those yet to debut)

Dont worry about contracts feathered as there ways to persuade ;)
Sooner than later all will be sorted out :)

Positives

-haumole

- Marty

- AFB until Injury

NEGATIVE:

everything else

- Levi is **** and sloppy

- Tafua again

- overall effort does not exist, no heart no fight no power no speed nothing

A bit like the “ Good, Bad & Ugly “ that was done by ???? ( I forget ) a few years ago !!

Everything wasn’t bad , but a lot was and some parts were downright ugly.

We lack a number 9 and a Cam Munster type to generate speed and make the defence stand still and hesitate. I don't think our problem is that we are too structured (except when it comes to Jake Trbo), rather that we don't generate enough speed or bend the line enough to get moving. Flat footed all the time because we are trying to run all these attacking plays out the back without getting the opposition defence to backpedal at all in the plays leading up to it. Too many settlers and compacted by the lack of momentum and quality ball provided by Levi and Croker (probably biggest issue).

The warriors and many other sides this year have been able to constantly rush up on our playmakers because we don't build up any momentum from dummy half and our playmakers. Maybe we need to have more depth in our attacking line, some teams have some players standing 20metres behind the play the ball and run onto it.

By the time Jake gets the ball to shift it out to the backs the defence is already up in his face, he can't use any footwork because of it and therefore he is predictable. Without Tom Trbo and Fainu we need players like Suli to take runs (ball needs to be delivered well in front of them) and we need our dummy halves to get moving out of hooker and get our players running hard onto the ball so that we are bending the line and so that the defence constantly backpedals to allow players like dce, cust, parker and suli to all get in motion and run some sharp lines to break through them. Also lacking a lot of support play.

Both Funa and Hamuole looked good with the later never getting man handled at all. Suli needs more touches in the game that is quite obvious and Dce needs to look for him. Elliot is bloody ordinary at covering kicks in goal but we knew that last season and Jorge enough is enough there he has to be gone even if not this season by next year.
I would not be keeping Waddell or Boyle past this season they are tripe.
We may still play finals footy but it’s fairly obvious now we are a one man band named Tom.
Hopoate needs to play next week he a much better option either on Jorge wing or Elliot. Funa and Hamuole showed they belonged with Funa while rushing on Hiku outside defence was outstanding and great pass for Jorge try and the big fella never manhandled.

I think it's the mental attitude at the start especially the refs killing us.

We had mental toughness to come back from 16-0 but seem sluggish of late starting.
