The game has moved on from me and a lot of people from my generation

If there is one consistent in life, it is that every generation will referr to their younger years as the GOLDEN YEARS.

For every member referring to the 70s as the best time there will be and equal portion claiming the 80s, and another claiming the 90s, 00s and so on and so forth.....there will be some saying 60s or 50s were the best time.

There are members in their late teens/early 20s now who in 20/30/40 years will talk about how the 2020s were the halcyon days.

I'm just hitting my 40s and seeing it in myself. It's just how nostalgia works.

Our brains focus in on the good memories, the mundane are forgotten and all in all our physical prime years become THE PRIME YEARS.

This is life.
well, manly won 4 premierships in the 70's, so it must be the best decade 💕

Talking about how the game has changed and its all entertainment, i do like Sticky's team "Viking Clap". they are the only team that does a ritual before a game. perhaps we can do a "Eagles Flap" of some sort with accompanying music.😃

Since 1971 when the six tackles rule was introduced, the club with the most grand final wins is Manly.

Manly 7
6: Dogs, Broncos, Penrith

I think other than in 1971 (Souths) and 2004-07 (Dogs), Manly have been in the lead that whole time, mostly on their own.

I wonder if the older generation complained about the 6 tackle rule being brought in and how it wasn't the game they grew up watching anymore?

The six tackle rule came into effect in Australia with the start of the 1973 season. So yes, seven Manly titles from that season onwards.

Souths were the kings of the four tackle (1967-72) era, with Balmain and Manly picking up the premiership scraps.

When the Cross was the place to be. Then Oxford street took over for a while with the alternate set till the lockout laws and organised crime/drug biker gangs finished it all.
Newtown is the hub of Sydney now. It has more small bars, restaurants, big pubs and breweries that are heaving all week.

Barry O Farrell and his boomer mates put an end to the Cross to push up real estate prices and get developers in to gentrify the scene.

The Cross is now full over 55s who bought apartments there to reminisce about how it used to be, all while sipping coffee in their active wear.

The younger generations that called the Cross home have moved to places like Marrickville, St Peters, Newtown.

Re: O’Farrell, he was just reacting to a crisis that was a long time coming.

Problems at the Cross, as far as hard drugs were concerned, really kicked off during the R&R period of the 1960s/early 1970s.

By the early 2000s, liquor licences to massive beer barns (operating on extended hours) were being granted by the unfortunately/appropriately-named Labor man - Richard Face - left, right and centre. That was a recipe for disaster, that eventually led to the lockout laws.

Here’s a photo of Dick. See what I mean?

The gentrification of the Cross area has been ongoing for decades. It’s just that more and more the action has moved onto the ‘centre of gravity’ along Darlinghurst Rd.

Let’s face it, when men young and old from the ‘burbs can access porn online, why would you bother with travelling to Kings Cross?

I guess its an age thing. I went to my first game at the SCG in June 75 seeing Manly vs The Roosters. We lost due to two freaky field goals by two brilliant players; John Brass and Russell Fairfax with a disallowed try by Ray Branighan on the full time hooter. A great day watching Johnny Gibbs tear them apart in under 23s.

I have enjoyed watching games with my daughter at Brookie this year (sorry, it's not 4 Pines). I loved the semi against the rising Bulldogs but I am over the game day hype. Someone mentioned the WWE, I get that comparison. Vlandys is an analogue of Vince McMahon, as was Gallop, Greenburg et al. Something died with Super League.

Eagle Eric (does he post here?), drops some fabulous old clips on YouTube from the late 70s to the 80s. A rough and tough game to be sure, but the skill levels of Wombat, Joe Cool, Rick Chisholm and Phil Blake were something to behold.

Line astern backline movements. No flat or dodgy forward passes. Backing each other up for length of the field tries. And no ground announcers bellowing unintelligible vowels.

But at my age, I'm not their target audience.
Here is the 1976 match I was referring to which is what I thought you were referring to.
