Yep, as I stated in another thread, my love affair with Rugby League started mid 1960’s and ended on GF day 2013. I just can’t get excited about it anymore. I refer to it as “NRL Product “ these days. Didn’t watch the GF because I refuse to watch the purple scum……ever.
Ralphie is that end date in 2013 from the 14 incorrect refereeing decisions that went against manly in the grand final.

The corresponding game the following year was a tight one too:

Branighan looked like scoring on full time after a long break, only to be injured in the tackle from Mark Harris. I think it was ruled he had hit the corner post before grounding the ball.

It was a long time before Branighan got up. He might even have left the field on a stretcher. Ray Branighan was a great player.
Was at this game standing on the Sheridan stand concourse and Branighan definitely got it down before he hit the corner post. When he got up his face was covered in blood. If video refs were around then it would have been an 8 point try

Interesting that two years in a row, Manly lost to Easts at the SCG by the barest of margins, with tries disallowed to Manly that would have seen them win both games.

I miss the real game of Rugby league played in the seventies and eighties that has now be morphed into the current money focused circus that is controlled by the mighty dollar and a minority of clubs. I hate how the broadcasts are saturated by gambling adds and promotions. Its ironic really that clubs have to have poker machines in private rooms out of the eyes of the passing public whereas the NRL broadcasts are saturated with Gambling adds and shoved into our faces. These broadcasts are to millions of people and children. I find it disgusting. Whilst they are attracting crowds and making money there is no going back. Even our pathetic government has hadn't acted in accordance with the recommendations made after a long investigation into this. Shame shame shame.

Interesting at the amount of ad lib and open type footy that was more part of the general play in those highlights with Manly and the Roosters in that 70 's era .
Two quality sides at the time to allow it more but no doubt quite entertaining and impressive in many ways .
With the much more specialized and intensive training and preparation for some time now , inevitable that the game would become a bit more programmed and controlled but the skill and power level is on a higher scale .
No doubt the introduction of the Pacifica influence has changed the nature of the game power based wise .
Most high profile footy code's and game trends evolve over time , really commend any League coach who encourages more open type footy ; [ and give Seibold his due here ] as opposed to the boring and lack luster bash and barge , stifling type tactics which some coaches still seemed to opt for in recent seasons .
In any case , high profile sporting games and as is commonly recognized , predominately a product or entertainment commodity for better or worse for some time now and can not see that changing any time soon

The 10 m rule from 5 was the most significant and damaging change to the game. Having that extra room changed the ruck forever. Teams started playing flat

Whoever oversaw that was a fool

I did like to watch teams play with depth in attack hitting holes at pace. A sudden change of direction just prior to taking the pass had the effect of a can opener.

Just imagine or see examples when the 3 meter rule [ or yards back then ] was in play .but the game was played at a bit slower pace and intensity back then .
Head body really did not have much choice the way the play was being stifled and restricted and with the improved fitness and mobility levels towards the end of the 5 meter rule and to alter to 10 meters .
Much better , all things taken into account with the 10 meters and extra room to move .
Certainly put a lot of demands and pressure on defensive formations though but no bigie

I did not watch the grand final because Manly was not in it
But I did watched all games all season including all finals games up until Manly were disappointedly eliminated

To me and many others in our age group that I know the Game has moved on another level ,,,
Another level of excellence
The speed of the game is as breathtaking and as exhilarating as an 80 minute non stop thrilling roller coaster ride

The changes that I do not enjoy is not seeing Manly Dominate in finals any more
Although this breaks my heart . My heart will always be Loyal to Manly

Penrith's 4 Premiership wins in arow in a Salary cap Handy cap era
Has got to be the Greatest achievement in the History of the game

Records are meant to be broken
and our Greatest game of all Keeps on keeping on going to another level and Breaking them
Most people I know don’t watch nrl anymore…when you can predict who will be in the grand final before the season kicks off I think paints a picture of another predictable season ahead..same teams at top middle and bottom of the ladder…it gets boring..even a mate from Penrith and his mates are over it

Record ratings and crowds up. You mustn't know many people. Whilst most of us old boys don't like the current game, we still watch it.

I rarely go to a live game these days even if we are close to the Goldie or for that matter Brizvegas as I’m usually travelling when they are on.

And even if I was at home I doubt I’d go anyway , boozed up rabid Donkey fans aren’t a thing of joy to be honest.

It’s much more peaceful watching on on the Telly and if they’re going **** you haven’t wasted several hundred dollars.

NRL is mostly a quite riveting entertainment product, but has definitely evolved bigtime over the years. Rules of the game have changed. Privately owned clubs have also brought a different feel, as a supporter.

Say, does anyone think one of the new franchises will have a victory song with words like these, "So it's guzzle guzzle guzzle, As we pour it down our muzzle.... More beer!!"
Maybe not. An innocent time long past @:D @:D

Major contributor to all the injuries in the game these days too... both attacker and defender are impacting at a higher speed...
