Some of Cameron Smith’s friends and former teammates who have known him for years reportedly can’t even get in touch with the NRL legend as he drifts into the rugby league wilderness.

While the 37-year-old hasn’t officially announced his retirement, the odds of him returning to professional footy appear almost non-existent as he settles into life on the Gold Coast, seemingly happy to walk away without a fuss.

Although questions about his future dominated the end of last year and continued into the off-season, Smith’s playing days appear behind him — unless he makes an unlikely return for a Queensland-based club like the Broncos or Titans.
 
Maybe he's just drawing it out until the last moment and he calls a press conference at 5pm tomorrow to announce his retirement.

It's obviously driving the press mad which could be his intent all along.
 
You want to find him. He’s 10 minutes up the road from my joint overseeing his well guarded and wooded mansion that is in progress. My mate sees him regularly down at our local shopping centre (Mudgeeraba).He has been hanging out with his good mate Matty Geyer (who is also a local, and unlike Smith, is a great bloke).
I did think a month or so ago, Walters had him at the Broncos. But that’s fallen thru.
And yes, the sad irony is not lost on me. The one player I truly despised and hated with a passion......now will reside 10 minutes up the road. Faaaark!
 
Without Levi. Without Fainu. WhatEVER we had left (cap wise), we should have coaxed one year (ALA Chooks with Cronk) out of Cameron Smith. Love him or hate him, he's what we need, and he's talented. Maybe even bring some energy and intensity into our group.

Don't care if it's all 3rd party sponsorship. He's recognisable, and could have provided a lot of marketing to a local medium / large sized business.

The Hooking situation, and not having a second specialist fullback at our club to cover fullback is inexcusable. We are talking centres and wings at fullback. 5/8's and halves at hooker. 5/8's and halves at the utility position.

This is a professional sport, right? It's not, point at Sam on the bench, and give that little fella a go, because we have no-one else type thing?

Even Storm coach Craig Bellamy couldn’t get an answer out of Smith, and is no closer to knowing what the star hooker’s future holds.

“With Cameron, I’m not quite sure. You’d think with how close it is to Round 1 that he wouldn’t be playing this year,” Bellamy told SEN Breakfast on Wednesday.

“I went to his book launch and we met for dinner while I was still up there. We’ve had a few conversations this year, but his decision didn’t come up.

“I tried a couple of times last year and got a pretty icy response!”

As usual, its all about Scam. I think Drizzle have moved on and really for what its worth. Scam you might be a great of the game, hold endless records etc but you will NEVER be considered or remembered as a sporting idol, due to your win at all costs and bend ever rule to achieve your success. You spent most of your career as a protected specials and you are easily the most controversial figure in the game over the last decade or so.

BTW the game is actually bigger than you will ever be!!

Yeah possible but I think unlikely - any other player would have announced their retirement by now.

He's well aware of the media over this & it's not like he's moved to deepest, darkest Peru so he's not exactly as isolated or 'MIA" as he seems to be desperately making out
