Bearfax it's ok that you will go to any lengths to support dce in this. Perhaps you just see it that way or perhaps you will protect a fav player at all costs. Either way is fine too.

The fact you have people here and on the streets/radio etc who always bagged dces game management, or those that bagged him taking the money and backflipping, those that moan he never won us a premiership after the gun team was torn apart, those that supported him and never understood everyone's complaints, and those that loved him - have now had their head turned says something about the situation that you are simply missing.

It's not an assumption that DCE made this announcement without notice to the club and most of his Manly teammates. It's also not an assumption that DCE (and his media mouthpieces) have attempted to stage-manage and manipulate his announcement(s) and failed miserably. In my opinion, and predominantly through his recent actions, DCE has badly sabotaged his Manly legacy and has no one to blame but himself.

Some can't see past that flawed, simplistic logic of "he's paid a lot of money he must be good". We paid overs, and for far, far too long. We were rorted. He hasn't been worth the money. He's not elite...there is not one individual accolade in his pool room since 2015 that says "elite". Club awards are laughable justification of his alleged elite status. An above average NRL half, yes. But not elite.

Less than 25 games now and we can move on and get this club back on track. He has shown how much Manly means to him by the manner of his departure.

I see much of your point , and in some ways don’t disagree.

But I do think you need to acknowledge that many are pissed off with him , our longest standing player , our club captain none the less , for the manner that this has been handled.

He'll fight the good fight as chair of the Players Association but did he ever spit the dummy over the bad press and criticism he received over his decision to back out of the Titan's deal. He'll tell Schuster publically to pull his socks up, but do you hear criticisms of other players, refs, clubs? On the field its quite amazing that he is rarely injured, partly genetic no doubt, but I also think its to do with his commitment to fitness and being everywhere on the field. And it is extraordinary how he adapts to the needs of the game. His kicking game for instance has developed in leaps, 40/20s, long kicks, kicks for Ola and the wing men, drop kicks with both feet. Quite remarkable and developed while playing at Manly. And then he never shirks in defence.

So what is not to like? I think some resent that Foran left and DCE stayed. We loved Foran because he gave his all in attack and then we felt for him with his personal issues, marriage problems, money misuse, substance issues, emotional problems and then there were the injuries. He was vulnerable, flawed like us. He was like a family member, one of the boys going through hard times. DCE is always in control. He's a natural leader, not like one of us. He's a perfectionist. He obviously gets people off side because he seems to say it as it is. He is considered somewhat abrasive, full of himself. I think some of us wanted him to fall, at least a little, to make him more humble and more like one of us. But he has always obviously been highly focussed in his responsibilities to the game, his family, his team...and leaders can be a little harder to like. His recent decision and the manner in which he said it without emotional content, without any disparaging comments, was consistent with how he operates. And a lot of people don't like that because it seems to have no feeling. DCE no doubt feels, but I have a mate like that and he is also very focussed. He's also a perfectionist, finds it difficult to express feelings even though he's a very kind fellow and would do anything for you. Showing feelings is a weakness to them. You can feel emotions but don't express them in public.

I understand your side , perfectly well and you make some excellent points.

I’m not in the “ let’s boo him “ brigade , that’s just stupid.

But I’m certainly in the “ you’ve lost my respect , nevertheless you are still a player , and the captain , so just do your job for the rest of the year and that will be that” camp.

I just believe that speech would have been better delivered now, and the end of the year it will just feel “ manufactured to make him sound like a great guy “.

You're right LC. They are assumptions but they are based on probable outcomes. You're right in some areas I should not have been so definitive. I apologise. However my points are based on elements we've all seen and are evidenced by what we know of DCE.

A few points though. Please don't misquote what I say. For example I never said all leaders can be hard to like. I said leaders can be a ittle harder to like. It doesn't translate to all and it doesn't say they are hard to like. It is suggesting in comparison to your colleagues, leaders have to make decisions at times that can be unpalatable. I didn't say we don't like how he announced things because it lacked emotion. You've twisted a number of elements there to fit your assumption. I said he says things as they are. Anyone watching him after a match can see that. He can obviously be a little abrasive and I suspect that's why he got Thurston offside. The whole argument here is to do with him not referring to or informing the fans. I didnt say it was lack of emotion. I did say that I suspect he sees expressing issues emotionally is difficult for him, a weakness. But that's entirely different. And of course he feels. Anyone who is so committed to his responsibilities as a family man and team captain has feeling otherwise they wouldn't bother.

I'll acknowledge that I should have been less definitive in some elements. I accept the criticism. However, LC you turned a lot of what I said around in a manner that was not what I was saying to meet your assumptions. I expect an apology for that. I was making a personality assessment assessment based on the information that we have before us. Its not totally accurate. I may even be wrong but I don't think so. it pains me to write this because it’s so cliche and probably what the media are gonna say, but I think DCE is playing in a dinner suit since he announced that he’s leaving. And I’ve seen his intensity drop off as far as rushing to get to the Ball and he just doesn’t seem to wind up his players but maybe he was doing that part of it all along. Yet when we have momentum, he is front and centre of everything that’s going on and fills the highlight reels when we’re winning. Disappears when it gets gritty though.

if he’s looking for an early release then the last couple of games have definitely helped that cause, maybe that’s why he wanted? 🤷‍♂️

Yes it’s been a seriously flawed approach , and one you cannot blame one coach , one recruitment team nor one football department for , in essence they’ve all been culpable.

Not sure where they go from here , problems in a lot of areas.

Agree Mark. I i’m sure to outsiders we look like stupid whingeing Manly fans throwing a tantrum, but to us its like watching a re-run of a bad movie. I think the reason why we are so quick to say the season is lost is because it’s rinse and repeat of the last couple of seasons. We haven’t figured out that Defence and only Defence will win a premiership with this team, but absolutely nothing has changed as far as our defence is concerned.

And unfortunately we know that nothing will change this season and we will probably make the eight but against the better teams that defence just is paper thin and won’t get us home.
