The Daly Cherrygraph

My summary would be, I am not upset that he is going as it was about time anyway and we need to look to the future. We need youth in there, we need cap space back and we need a new look. The issue is solely how he has handled it. It will no doubt impact the playing group and the remainder of this year. It may impact our retention and recruitment as players will be asking themselves what is going on to make the most capped player and captain act this way. The sooner we identify a replacement and have a go forward plan the better, and I think it should be expedited somehow.

Thanks for the complete reply… I understand the perspective that you are presenting with regards to Choc and, as I said, he may be COMPLETELY right about Chez but the thing is that is HIS perspective… others may have completely different opinions of Chez - personalities matter as they impact upon perspective…

I recall Choc from that time when he left Manly and (acknowledging that he may not be the most eloquent fellow) he WAS salty and he stirred up **** and spat Manly out of his mouth way too much… it put me right off him at the time and I have never really come back… but that’s me, my personality and, resultantly, my perspective…

Not saying it’s right, it is my opinion and I think of others well before Choc when I think about loyal Manly stalwarts…

…and please don’t take this personally @Nike as I also like and respect you as a poster bud
Definitely didn't take it personally and I understand your point of view better now, it's logically consistent. I think even if we might disagree I still owe you the respect, it's on me to listen and understand where you're coming from instead of just stonewalling.

I appreciate you extending the same courtesy to me and honestly think you've summarised the whole situation best, it comes down to perspective.

It would seem that all of you are either in two camps

1) the club & Mestrov have royally screwed this and it’s all their fault , Daly is a god and should be treated like one.

OR

2) Dalys a Diva, he’s playing this beautifully to create his media persona, whilst ditching the club who gave him a start , and a record 10 year contract , for what quite clearly is a monster two year deal with the Roosters , which will involve coaching post retirement and a walk up start at Channel 9.

Not sure there’s a third option but happy to hear one.
I'm kinda in the option 2 camp sorry to say, it's not our Club by the looks of it. It's all Cherry on top Evans, going for the extra coin again.

I apologise if someone has already asked this (coz there has been soooooo much written) but I just re-watched Sunday's presser with Seibold and DCE and whilst Seibold did look a bit nervous when DCE was asked about his future, DCE's answer was perfectly fine. There was no hint of a problem, it all sounded like it was going to play out like it should - behind closed doors etc etc.

My question is - WTF happened between that interview and DCE making such a public announcement. It was a complete 180 on how he said he wanted it to be.

I don't get it.

Comment in bad taste. Manly fans might not be above that, but Silvertails members definitely should
be.
Go Manly! Go Silvertails

ps I think DCE broke Silvertails, sites barely working since i just logged back in, must be due to high amount of traffic!! Good news for @Dan @:D
Not sure, it should generally hold up to this much traffic. I have other matters I've been dealing with and missing away $550 an hour.

On the face of it, I agree with you.

Both parties agree that DCE advised the club in December he would not be at Manly after this year. Mestrov's understanding is DCE meant he would either retire, or head overseas, therefore respected that and neither offered a contract nor made that conversation public.

DCE has now aired that publicly under the weight of media scrutiny.

Now, where it becomes a bit murky is media reports suggest DCE is in discussions with rival NRL clubs about playing next year. DCE has neither confirmed nor denied these reports, not has he confirmed or denied Mestrov's understanding that he at the very least implied to the club he would not be playing NRL next year.

Depends who you believe I guess.

According to AI this is a summary of the DCE contract stuff

  • 2011: Debuted for the Manly Sea Eagles and played a key role in their premiership win.
  • March 2012: Signed a contract extension with Manly until the end of 2015, upgrading his salary from approximately $85,000 to around $500,000 per year.
  • Mid-2012: Reports emerged that Cherry-Evans was unhappy with his deal and sought another upgrade, causing tensions within the club.
  • March 2015: Signed a four-year contract with the Gold Coast Titans, set to begin in 2016.
  • June 2015: Backflipped on the Titans deal before the Round 13 deadline, signing an eight-year, $10 million “lifetime” contract with Manly. This led the NRL to abolish the backflip rule.
  • 2018 – Willie Mason Comments: Former teammate Willie Mason criticized Cherry-Evans for the way he handled his contract dealings. Mason recalled a moment when Cherry-Evans announced his Titans deal during a team meeting, which Mason felt was unnecessary and poorly received by teammates.
  • 2018 – Anthony Watmough Comments: Former Manly teammate Anthony Watmough publicly labeled Cherry-Evans as selfish and accused him of contributing to a toxic environment at the club.
  • 2018 – Jackson Hastings Incident: Cherry-Evans was involved in an altercation with teammate Jackson Hastings, leading to a reported fallout in the playing group. Cherry-Evans was fined $10,000, and Hastings was ultimately pushed out of the club.
  • April 2022: Signed a two-year extension with Manly, keeping him at the club until the end of 2025.
  • March 24, 2025: Announced he would not be signing another extension with Manly and would leave at the end of the 2025 season, despite a two-year, $1.5 million offer.
Oh and this

Glenn Stewart's Departure (2014): In 2014, salary cap pressures led to Glenn Stewart's exit from Manly. Reports indicated that retaining Cherry-Evans was a priority for the club, and Stewart's departure was seen as a move to free up salary cap space to accommodate Cherry-Evans' contract demands

Is there a chance 100% footy offered him $$$$ to make the announcement live on their show?

"Game Day is still the best day of my week". It seems he is still enjoys his footy. And so i believe he will continue playing for another year or two. But lets face it, he is getting older, like he's what 37 ?and this is a young man's game. He's giving the club early warning about finding a replacement. He will be difficult to replace, but ultimately he will be replaced.

MWSE and Daly should not part on bitter terms. Neither should the fans boo him at Brooky. He has been loyal and valuable for all these 15 seasons. So many match winning field goals and performances. Which i believe he will continue to make. He has always displayed a professional attitude.

The rudeness and short term thinking i have read above, in this thread, makes me slightly embarrassed about the maturity of some long standing supporters.

It has not been a good week overall with this announcement and the torn Achilles, not withstanding the Raiders game. But MWSE are still in the running for a title and this year is our best shot in quite a while.
Yes that’s one take on things, the other being , he’s been here for 15 seasons , he’s earned ( at times ) well above what anyone else in the game was earning ( many have now caught up ) and as captain , and long serving player , he should have handled things better.

I wouldn’t feel so bad about him if last night he fronted a press conference with Mestrov and said this.

“ I’d like to announce that 2025 will be my last year at Manly. In the off season I received an extraordinary offer from the Sydney Roosters which involves two extra years of playing , 5 years of coaching & media involvement. I’d like to wish the club all the best for the future , and thank them & the fans for 15 wonderful years. I’ve loved my time here but sadly a fairy tale ending isn’t to be. I hope you understand the decision is in the best interests of me and my families financial future”

I’d be shattered , but I’d be applauding him for his honest and sincere statement.

Regardless this is the way a statesman handles things. He takes the focus away from himself , away from the club and says ( which we can all understand ) that’s it’s purely a financial decision.

Would I boo him ( if I was going to the game ) of course not, that’s just stupid.

But as club captain , and club legend he could of handled it much much better.

PS: the Roosters part etc is just me summising , not facts , just a guess.

I have been a big fan of DCE however this leaves a sour taste. There are two sides to the story however the bottom line is he has decided to go. Does not sit well with me. We may never know the true story but DCE is no fool and there is a fine line with putting on too much pressure (by the club) to get an early decision versus giving DCE time and space. It does look like Manly were hoping for a 'better' value salary and after paying $1M+ for circa 10 years this seems reasonable. DCE however clearly needs to look after himself and his family.

What's the bet that a) he goes to the chooks; b) gets valued at $400k in their cap; and c) steps down from origin to focus on club footy.
Na - if selected he'll play origin.. Too much money to pass up.

More PRO Cherry-Evans commentary from a Nine-owned media outlet (SMH). It's starting to look highly probable that the Roosters organised him a contract with Nine along with Uncle Nick's golf bets!

The article of course once again contradicts itself.
