The Daly Cherrygraph

My new take after processing this over night…

  • Manly decided not to re-sign DCE so they could retain Hoppa and offer him the fullback spot. Turbo to 6
  • DCE went out to find an offer and got one
  • It gets announced to the public that he is leaving Manly
  • Manly scramble to appease fans with a last minute offer and state that they always wanted him to stay, knowing that their offer likely doesn’t compete with whatever offer DCE has from another club and so their original Hoppa plan can stay in place

What is it with this bloke. Can he not conduct a normal contract negotiation without a media grandstand circus. Does my head in that we're in this sh*t show circus again over this bloke. Time to move on. He's not going to deliver us a premiership, hes had 10 years of delivering mediocrity, he's cost us a fortune (our own fault of mismanagement ). Forget chasing the bloke just move on and spend the $1mil + on getting some decent defenders.

I am shattered...not so much for the future of Manly (he had to finish sooner or later) but more what it means in reflection; all my fond memories of DCE and the club's highlights over the last 15 years come with an asterisk now. The enjoyment of looking back is clouded. I understand it's a job for the players but I guess deep down part of me hoped (or believed) that it was different for a veteran of 15 years and a proud club captain. The pride I felt when we beat Canterbury in the semi-final last year, with DCE scoring a cracking try of his own and being a big part of Koula's match winner, seems odd to me knowing that he could turn around and wear that Bulldogs jumper against us?! Why?!

Having thought about the possible reasons, I have landed on two schools of thought. They are based on reading between the lines of what's been said and/or accepted in various instances:
1. I heard a rumour last year that DCE did not get on with Seibold and was keen to go elsewhere to finish his career. I heard it before the media mentioned anything about a missing invitation to Daly's wedding. I didn't believe it at the time because I thought it was inconceivable that he could leave Manly. That it's since happened and he's talking two years post-Manly, says the rumour was either odd coincidence, or true.
2. He's told Manly way back in December that this year will be his last at Manly because he has signed a deal with the Roosters or Dogs. Why? Because of commercial arrangements/contacts/life after footy stuff that Manly cannot offer, etc.

What I choose not to believe is that Manly fell asleep at the wheel, disrespected him, didn't offer a deal that he was after, etc. I base that on his decision to inform Manly of his departure at season's end, way back last year, when the conversation first started. He's indicated that both parties have known for some time. If he was leveraging Manly for a better deal that was not forthcoming, he wouldn't have told them of his decision last year and he would refute claims by Mestrov that he had indicated retirement or overseas, etc.

So yeah, in my mind, he's leaving because he doesn't like Seibs and/or he's landed a better post-football opportunity with another club. I could be wrong about it all but that's what my gut is telling me.

If he wants a premiership the roosters are further away than us. So if he is heading to them as suspected it confirms it is all about the money
Don’t think I’d agree with that, Tedesco/Walker/DCE/Robson is instantly up among the best spines, Collins, Lenui, Crichton and Radley already well established top line forwards and plenty of young talent in the pack as well. Probably just lacking in the centre/wing department

As in for this year? An attempt to get him off the books for 2025? It seems odd they would do that because Walsh and Large are not ready...
He didn’t clarify, but I took it as they were making it clear that the end of his current contract would be the end of his tenure, but it would be extremely odd to be ringing other clubs to tell them that, potentially looking for swap deals ?

What's with the idea that every player or captain of the club should invite their coach of 2 years to their wedding?

Does everyone invite their manager of 2 years in their workplace to their wedding?

You have limited numbers and I would think many family and friends of many years to invite, than feel obliged to invite your coach or team leader. You invite people you will still have hopefully close relationships for the rest of their lives.

Yeah, I thought that was weird. Did he invite every bloke he plays with?

Another thing I think is weird is this offer of a coaching job. Every time I hear it spoken about, it's as if DCE is going to be this great coach. He may well be but what evidence is there of this?

Yeah, it's odd because they don't need to shop a guy that is not under contract. There'd be no reason to ring others to say 'we are not holding onto him when his current deal expires'.

It'd be specialty coaching for the halves and they'd see how he works with them at training already. He has obviously shown himself to be a strong mentor to the younger players at the club.
