The Daly Cherrygraph

Daly Cherry-Evans could be valued at less than $400,000 in the salary cap by the NRL next year if Manly want to re-sign him. But right now, the club privately believes he entered this year leaning towards giving the game away at the end of the season.

Manly insiders, not authorised to speak publicly, say Cherry-Evans has been told about a potential coaching job at the club, while media opportunities are also being put forward.

There has been a lot written and said about Cherry-Evans’ future. At this point, he has not yet made up his mind whether to play on in 2026. And that’s a long way from demanding a two-year extension to stay at Manly, as has been suggested in some areas. Neither the club nor DCE’s management say they have heard anything about demands for a two-year contract extension.

Some of the commentary about Cherry-Evans has gone down badly with those close to him.

Cherry-Evans is keeping things to himself, so the truth is not easy to extract. From what this column can ascertain, the club is completely aware of his position, that he is still contemplating his future.

Sources at the NRL, not authorised to speak publicly, tell me Cherry-Evans will not break the bank for the Sea Eagles, or another club, if he wants to play next year. The Eagles have been told he will be valued by the NRL at $400,000, or even less, on the salary cap.

That is in line with Ben Hunt and his valuation at the Broncos. Hunt, 34, was seen as a $650,000 player by the NRL. That would mean Manly would pick up a bargain buy if Cherry-Evans, 36, was to stay, particularly when compared to the monster $1.4 million-a-season deal Dylan Brown will earn in Newcastle.

The NRL can nominate a minimum figure for a player’s salary it will accept on the club’s salary cap, to avoid clubs being advantaged by a player agreeing to a contract significantly below market value. They won’t discuss publicly what the DCE figure is.

There are several other NRL clubs watching what Cherry-Evans does, and they will pay significantly more for a 12-month stint, which could be extended if he plays to the level everybody knows he can. DCE could earn in the order of $800,000 at rival teams if he shocked everyone and decided to test the market.

One of the clubs watching closely is the Roosters, who like DCE’s character and his relationship with their young half Sam Walker.

Cherry-Evans, who will be 37 by the start of next season, has shown no signs of slowing down, and with quality halfbacks thin on the ground in the NRL, he could make big money.

One thing that can’t be challenged is his commitment to a big year with Manly.

I dont know how they feel, but I've played alot of footy and team sports in my time and I know how id feel about it. I couldn't imagine there wouldn't be any with similar thinking in the group as mine. I could be wrong, but I'd really hope I'm not. Cause that would be a really poor reflection on where the players hearts lie
Players play for money and family more than anything I reckon… half our squad are imported and will not blink an eye at Chez deciding to play elsewhere…

question is “how does this affect turbos and their next contract negotiations?”

I have mixed feelings about this. From what I read it sounded like manly were giving DCE room to make a decision on his future and had obviously assumed it was going to be one year or possibly retirement and DCE made announcement live on TV without them knowing of his decision hence the call from mesteov and Penn to offer a two year deal but obviously he was waiting for a offer of two years but never came before now. Myself I could never play for another club and I'm not sure why he would unless it was obviously about money. DCE definitely seemed to get better as a player with age but I'm also looking forward to a new start if thats what it comes to. If he plays for the roosters then that will be hard for many to ever see DCE again the same way as he was manly through and through but to me will tarnish his persona as a manly great. Look at some positives as we will have alot more money to spend on other potential players to buy and upgrade other manly players. The timing of this to me is perfect as I see it reflect in what is happening all over the world as many things that do not align or resonate like they once did are changing or going away entirely. I wish DCE all the best on retirement as that is what I would do if I was him and he could of been a halves coach at manly for years to come but looks like it's not going to happen that way. We will have brighter future as a club now you watch!

There are many motives why players decide to play for a club
Money, security, Being VALUED and being paid according to your Standard .
Loyalty is another motive but Loyalty works both ways .
In Professional sport It is not Personal It is Business
The Manly Club have decided to take their business else where
and DCE accepted his fate.
Now Mestrov and Seibold will also accept their fate with Brooks Arthur and co

The moral of the story
You want to pay for cut price halves
You get what you pay for

Only just caught up on the interview. Definitely a lot of BS in there to make himself look good, unfortunately what comes with that is the club looks pretty bad (which, in fairness, they also are but we don’t need to get into that right now). Moving forward maybe it’s a good thing he’s gone, the extra cap space should be really beneficial if used correctly. Biggest concern at this stage is probably Mr Brooks trying to run the halves again, we’ve seen how that goes, help us lol.

Just hope this isn’t a big distraction on results this year though. Playing a pretty horrid team with a home crowd behind us is certainly the best possible scenario this week to potentially get us in good spirits and away from the noise.

Crowd reaction on Sunday will be an interesting one though. Clearly a lot of Manly fans aren’t happy with him, but I would hope we can still get behind him because any booing will only be more distraction for the team and won’t change his decision. And I know that with this team a good home crowd usually = a decent result.

The whole thing sucks, and I’m sad about it (almost more of the thought of him in that ugly Roosters jersey than anything else) but we cannot throw away the little improvements over the last few seasons that could very well turn into something half decent this year.

Just my 2 cents, we’ll see how it all goes I guess

Cherry definitely plays on somewhere next year!
Who let the Dogs out. Cya Sexton, you’re going to Manly. DCE the final piece in Gus’ masterpiece. Finishes at the Dogs with a cpl mil, a premiership, shares in 50/ 5star Landys hotels for life. Spend the next 10 years at 9 giving/getting handies under the broadcast desk from Brace and Cam (Not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Well I woke up to this news and am slightly surprised there's only a couple of new threads on the same dce topic, as usually there'd be 50 as everyone who has a thought deems it new thread worthy- so well done.

The whole spectrum of reactions as expected. haha.
Good to see, though if you're posting here it means that you weren't invited to the 'dce is finally going!' party that surely is happening still.

Anyway - It's Manly to have this play out like your local dumpster fire and nrl "journos" to produce sensational headlines whilst filling the columns back-tracking on what those headlines said.

I'm not that upset that he's going. It's his choice, he's getting older, our trophy cabinet is bare, etc.
I think players are more accepting than fans.
Sheesh, in the hockey (NHL) you can be traded instantly and can be playing against your old team the next week.
That probably rubs off on me a bit so I don't think this ruins seasons, etc.
dce says that he is an off the cuff player so there's possibly only a limited amount he can teach others, I don't know. But I'd like to see less getting tackled on the 4th/5th, and less 360 spins by the next halfback (but with dce's kicking game).

The texting live on air was a total desperate move (if true) that just looked pathetic and weak.

Hopefully Haumole smashes him next year, lol.

When dce re-signs: "Damn, we now lose weekes, humphreys, why did we re-sign him???"
When dce goes: "Damn, there's no one else, why didn't we resign him???"

Summary for those without 15 mins:

dce: Thought about it and I'm leaving. Totes sorry to those upset.

lulz
My summary won’t be as eloquent as yours but here goes

Club said we will give you $x over y years
DCE said I want $A over B years
Club said if you show us an offer for that we will match it
DCE plays golf with Uncle Nick
Uncle Nick says he will pay DCE $A + 20%+ over B years
DCE realises Manly will never get to that level because it is too far apart from their offers
DCE is pissed off about that
DCE ****s on the club on tv

Regardless of the rights and wrongs (perhaps a bit of both from both parties) What a really sad way for his time at the club to come to an end, if that's the case. Business should be conducted behind closed doors and not in the full glare of the media.
The day he finished with us was always going to be just around the next bend. He could always have decided to retire after this year anyway so it's up to the club to have his successor lined up. He can't play forever
