The Bully files

We need to move away from the 'best players start, backups on the bench' mentality.

Bully is one of our better forwards but for mine offers better value providing impact off the bench as a middle.
Wishart could get a blue jersey this year and doesn't start for his club.

I love Bully , he’s a champion , but he’s a middle forward NOT an edge.

He goes , and goes hard , he tackles and tackles hard , but that’s it !!

Don’t try and make him into something else.
Given he had such a good year last year, what's your thought on why we haven't re-signed him yet? You think they're still trying to decide where he fits in best?

Would probably have to rate as one of the better finishing props going around , seems to have found that helpful knack of timing his runs with some quick foot work to gain some effective go forward . Not too sure that i have noticed him break any i st up tackles all that often but as long he is getting some worthwhile forward momentum and then with a quick play the ball , good enough .
Also would hardly say an aggressive type defender but again enough i st up contact to get a job done there .
Had some woeful defence [ and defensive attitude ] when moved back to Blacktown a few seasons ago so pleasingly has much improved from that situation .
Alioia used to be fairly useful breaking i st up tackles in the general ruck area and certainly hope that he can find that ability again .
Think commonly accepted , Bully best off the bench and whether he is included in some S O O extended squad this season or not , of course would be a very useful middle for Manly ongoing at a fair contract value

Bully is a terrific attacking forward and is quick. His needs to hit harder and work harder in defence and he will he will go to the next level. He would make a great hole running backrower if he could adapt to that game. It's strange he has the attributes of a great backrower but hasn't produced in that position yet. I'd love to see him make a fist of it in 2025.

Takes both sides to sign a contract ... He may believe he will be worth more after a good season ... or that another club my want him more ...
Although (from what we gauge from the outside anyway) he seems pretty happy at Brookie, he might even be holding out for a return to a QLD club.

He'd be better than burbo. Guy can hit the line at speed and has the power to break through. I'd at least like to see him goto brooks edge in some attacking sets because he is good in the middle and we need him there ATM.

I don’t get the fascination with trying to move Bully to an edge. Other than the fact we don’t have a good left edge option, there’s no other reason to do so - he’s shown it doesn’t suit his game. Very little ball playing capability and defensively gets found out even in the middle.

He is a really handy middle for the modern game given his speed so why move him? You’d be weakening our middle and in my opinion also weakening the edge. Lose lose.

I agree.... impact middle from the bench is his wheelhouse imo!

Had the notion that Bully could develop into an effective edge type player and was tried there in some of his early appearances for Manly a few seasons ago .
Not a worst option type player there but just based on his attacking style and hole running or attacking ability , much more suited to that more direct type run into the ruck in the middle .
Same with his defensive tendencies .
Was tried as a 13 in trials a couple of years ago but only average there and that was that .

I rate Bully as an "impact middle" off the bench. Strong, with a lot of pace, and in my first choice 17 for sure.

However, I feel like those trying to wedge him into a starting edge spot ( where he isn't suited) or a starting middle, are getting a bit ahead of themselves.

Because who's better? Aloiai? Jake at prop? Brown? Sipley?

I can understand the debate about Paseka being better - but you tell me, out of all our props, who's better than Bully? In fact, I'd even say the same for our backrow stocks.....Haumole okay....but who else?

I reckon the theory would be that Bully's superior leg speed is better utilised against a "tiring defence".

If you read my post carefully, you will realise that I like Bully but would not have him in my starting team. I personally wouldn't have Paseka either in the starting team while we are at it. I think like Bully he is better off the bench for impact - like NAS in Melbourne.

but seeing you asked

Jake at prop for sure. Last time I checked he was picked at SOO in that position.

And I would start at Aloiai at prop over Bully as he is better equipped to soak up the early physicality. (that doesn't mean i prefer Aloiai over Bully overall, by the way)

And to be honest Brown had a better season than Bully last year overall, even though he dropped off in the last 6 weeks.

Like I said Bully is a really good impact player, and in my top 17, but he's better off the bench for impact when the game opens up a bit.
