Furious Melbourne powerbrokers are incensed with the conduct of Brandon Smith during contract negotiations and are considering immediately cutting the star hooker loose.

Smith’s manager confirmed to the Storm on Monday that his star client would be joining the Roosters from 2023. The decision came despite Smith guaranteeing that Melbourne would be given the last right to retain his services.

Before informing the incumbent club of his decision, Smith espoused the virtues of the Roosters on a YKTR podcast after a meeting with coach Trent Robinson.

The glowing praise for Robinson, club chairman Nick Politis, the Roosters players and the club’s culture incensed the Storm hierarchy, to the point where it may become untenable for Smith to again wear the purple jersey.

While the Storm refused to comment, the comments left coach Craig Bellamy, chairman Matt Tripp and head of football Frank Ponissi livid.

Smith’s comments came after he played a round of golf with Kiwis teammate Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and retired Roosters Mitchell Aubusson and Jake Friend.

“It was actually mind-blowing,” Smith told YKTR Sports.

“I went and golfed with Jared, Aubo and Friendy, and Nick Politis was ringing them. He is over in LA on a business trip at the moment, and he is ringing them up just to see how they are.

“And they spoke with so much passion about the club … I think the best thing about the Roosters, bro, they are about your life, not your footy.

“Like, they want you to be set for life. They don’t want you to walk away with nothing from rugby league. They just pushed that. They can tell you how they are going to help you with life …

“I was just looking at the Roosters jersey … going, ‘I want to win a premiership in that jersey.’”

Melbourne rallied around Smith during the white-powder scandal and opted not to sanction him. They feel the support and respect shown to him during a difficult time has not been returned.

Smith hasn’t been discreet while testing his value on the open market, spotted publicly while meeting prospective clubs including the Dolphins and other Queensland clubs.

The Storm wanted the courtesy of being able to table him a counter-offer, but only learned of Smith’s decision after hearing about the podcast.

While his actions are unlikely to warrant disciplinary action from the Storm, whether his position is tenable will be determined after he meets with club bosses.

The club could opt to offer him an immediate release from the final year of his contract, although it remains to be seen whether the Tricolours have the salary cap space to accommodate him immediately.

The development comes on the day the Roosters confirmed the extension of star centre Joey Manu on a two-year deal.

“The Roosters is home to me and I couldn’t see myself playing for another club. From the top down, I love this club,” Manu said.

“Trent and the coaches and staff we have here help make me a better player and person every day. It’s a privilege to wear the Roosters jersey and I’m excited for what the future holds.

Robinson added: “Joseph has been with club since he was a schoolboy and I’ve loved watching him develop into the hardworking player and game-changer we all enjoy watching today.

“Joey has an incredible work ethic and is confident in the player and man that he is, and it’s great news that his leadership will continue to benefit the Roosters in the coming years.”

All over a game of golf but they may have had a unnamed caddy with them.

You must be joking, of course they have the salary cap space to take him in 2022.

Perspective time.

I don't understand why we don't just sign Cheese for a year, and lose Croker.

And also just get Olam and talk Joey Manu out if his contract extension whilst we are at it, so we can lose Parker and Lionel.
