Yeah I saw that bloody soap dodgers. Bairstow deserved what he got, great work by Carey. If it wasn’t for their kiwi captain they wouldn’t have got close to us.
It was great work by Carey. when they asked Starc about it, he said "If my catch was not out, then Bairtow's stumping was out."
Is anyone able to describe what “the spirit of the game” really means? It seems to me that it has selective application, depending on which side is supported / opposed…
England will no doubt claim they are 2-0 up now. They won the first test because it’s only because of them that Australia could win, and the won the second test because they won the spirit of the contest…
The stumping furore overshadowed a great game of cricket. Wonderful performance by the Aussies, and a heartstopping, incredible innings by Stokes.
As for Stokes, if he can bat like he did at Headingly in 2019 and at Lords yesterday, you have to wonder why he doesn’t average significantly higher.
I doubt Eng will claim they are 2 up (except for some fans), Stokes certainly doesn't. Regarding the stumping it's interesting he said "Oh if it was me I'd have to have a look at the whole spirt of the game situation" - though it's usually the loser who says that.
The funny thing about describing what the spirit of the game means...it's like that politician who said once..."I can't define porn but I know it when I see it."
Sprit of the game would be respecting the rules wouldn't it? If batsmen want to wander out of the crease without confirming the ball is dead...then too bad. The same with 'mankadding' - don't leave your friggen crease. Bowlers have to run in at full pace then make sure they turn and appeal to the umpire (Billy Bowden insisted that was brought back in) - respect the rules.
You can easily say that it was against the spirit of the game to see Starc take an obvious catch...yet the batsman didn't walk - and still accepted the umpire's call of not out, they didn't do that, so don't moan when the umpire says bairstow is out.
I've heard the "same old aussies, always cheating" chant for 20+ years now. In Brisbane one year we just replied 'same old pommies, always losing' (though you're always going to get drowned out by the barmy army who believe if they win the chants...somehow they win the game. lol).
Still, a good match and the next one will be just as intense, and hopefully if there's a members area that Aust have to walk past, players don't get insulted and assaulted like the 'home of cricket', boreds, I mean Lords.
