Just to digress .... "

ST Augustines College schoolboy Albert Hopoate has reinforced his ... as good a player as former Wallaby star Joe Roff at the same age..... in the sights of Rugby sevens for '20 Olympics .... "

I would say when thinking about our available salary cap that to have beaten off Rugby, Rugby Sevens and possibly every other NRL club that we would have a fair bit invested in this kid not only this year but for the next few years ..... I don't think he would have stayed at Manly just on a wink and a promise ......

Under current rules, NRL clubs can only sign players to a full-time top-30 or development contract at the age of 18, preventing them from playing NRL until they're adults.

But train-and-trial deals can be formalised as long as a player is 17 on November 1.

If you look at David Fifita from Broncos last year, he debuted at 18 - first player to be born in 2000's to debut in NRL. His birthday was in February, so he wouldn't have turned 19 till this year. So I suspect the rule is that you have to 18 before you can play NRL
