Suggesting paycuts mid-contract

BTW - I am cranky today. So I am sorry in advance if I sound like I am attacking you - that is not my intention. My son saw to it that I had now sleep, and I have Shingles..... so I am taking it out on you all - which is entirely unfair.

Can we still be friends?

Yeah, leave us alone and go punish your son!

(I'm kidding, don't do that).

I hope something can be done and everyone is happy. re: dce and I don't think he should take a cut (up to him if he wants) but on the other hand, players who sign contracts then hit their straps, certainly don't mind pushing for a mid contract 'up-grade'. I even think dce did this in 2012...?

Right - I've had enough.

I am sick to death of seeing comments on here about how DCE should offer to take a pay cut.

Are people being serious here? The captain of QLD, the Australian Half Back, one of our most successful players of all time (and likely most successful captain the way he is doing)

He is literally paid unders these days compared to the stupid money being thrown around for some 10 game wonders in the media. Yet some people on here have the audacity to suggest that HE is the guy who should take a pay cut in order to facilitate the resigning of a journeyman prop and a known 'home trouble maker' (I chose my words carefully there)?

Ask yourself this question - if the best player in the market came onto the market (I don't care who you think is the best...... insert any name really) and Manly want to sign them, that player would sit back and ask themselves ;
Wow, Manly have made a great offer to me. But they tend to bully their best players into taking pay cuts mid way through their contract in order to sign other players'.

Would YOU sign with a club who does that? MID CONTRACT?

What a stupid frikkin idea. When NEW contracts are being negotiated, some people may be willing to look their declining future in the eye and take a lower contract offer in their twilight years. I am cool with that.

But DCE has 4 frikkin years left on his contract people. He is our best player. He is our most successful player. He is fabulous in the media. And he is literally on UNDERS compared to stupid offers to players like K Pongya

I am sure the same people will blame DCE as soon as any player signs elsewhere.

Whoa up there a little cowboy and rewind a few years and the same DCE threatened mid contract the same ****. He was rightly undpaid then but just as rightfully overpaid now.

To be so outraged that people suggest that considering is strange, but highlights the blind eye toward cherry that other manly fans dont or do see.

Stop comparing him to hunt and all these other players. Think about his contributions to our team. Week in week out turbo x 2 , props x2 , fainu and possibly api in tandem ( but not alone ) all impact the result more than cherry. He has 4 or 5 blinders but he is a support player. One of the best.Top bloke, captain america teeth, But call a cherry a spade.

I wont spell it out further but ill leave you with what i consider one of the better sledges in cricket.
Sledging steve waugh, the quote , best batsmen in the world, not even the best batsmen in his family .
Moving forward , not considering age or injuries i would rate turbos, props and fainu my top 5 retention targets if i want to win a comp in the next 5

I was one of those responding to dce saying in an article that the brothers must be signed up.

It was somewhat tongue in cheek, but also some truth to it. I dont suggest that the club should raise this with him, and as you say, wouldnt sit well for future recruitment. If dce wants a premiership before his time is up, and knowing the brothers are the future of the club, he would want to ensure he still jas a good squad around him, as would the brothers.

Personally, he is a very good player, but certainly lacks consistancy. I dont think he is worth that much, but manly paid what we did due to foran leaving.

This isnt the same as me taking a paycut as work to get better co workers in, as their is no grand final at the end.

You took the words right out of my mouth!

Triple M = don't think they are going to win any pultizers! Yes, Cherry gets paid well (I am not disputing that) but proportionally (when third paraty caps, diamond rings, brown paper bags and testimonial games are all taken into account) you HAVE to admit that he is NOT over paid, or treated better for that matter. In fact.... i CANNOT WAIT for the day in 6 years when he racks up his 400th senior game. Let's see how the NRL treat him hey

The NRL will instigate a Retirement clause so no one can go past Scum Smith

Chez already has a premiership and a Clive Churchill Medal - same old, same old for him now 😀

Fiz is the sole reason that Chez doubled his contract value and length :wait:

Imagine if instead of vying for a top four spot and we missed the 8 like most expected

Sack Des
Get rid of cherry and swap him for Cust
Jorge is crap
Bring back Hastings
Get a young prop who wants to be here instead of Kapow
Moses fat & lazy not worth the cash
Dump Dylan the selfish hit
Sirro too injury prone
Joel too old

Give all the money we save to the Jake and Tom and that will make it all better

We could play bunny scratch then with 2 players and compete in school back yards

Smell the roses people
We will have all the players we want to retain bar none

Our players will negotiate to stay rather than our club negotiate to keep them

Some of these kids are tight and being influenced by the lure of old boys telling them how good it could be

Don’t think we will miss anyone we want

Lets get some things straight.

DCE is currently our best player and now probably the best half playing the game, a position you pay extras for anyway because of their important role..

DCE wanted to stay at Manly and was prepared to stay for less than a million a year, despite offers higher than that from other clubs, but the retention people back then blundered big time, offered Foran the world and left DCE with no option but to take the big offer from the Titans.

If it wasn't for Fulton's intervention after Foran knocked Manly's offer back, we'd be struggling at the bottom of the comp still. To entice DCE back, which resulted in some dreadful criticisms from certain quarters, Manly had to offer big money. It was not his fault and the money offered by the Titans was not peanuts. Their contract was $4.4 million over 4 years. Manly had to better that full stop.

No one was carrying on about the Titan's offer. This issue is just bad sportsmanship by those annoyed that he turned back the Titan's offer. He wasn't going to come back for under a million a year. So what is the issue? Enough griping. He's worth the money to Manly, and any fault lies with the actions of the club and has nothing to do with DCE..

I think the original post is why would anyone suggest he take a pay cut, which is a fair question, but when cherry signed a contract that was unders from sunny coast mamagement chez went after the club which ultimately hurt us big time. Was he right then, but to suggest it now is so wrong.

I don't get this , he is above it mentality tbh. Des has instilled a unity where jake, tom, walks and thommo have all stated less is best as long as we are together at manly. Who doesnt want to see more of that , from the captain

I dont see him as a long time qld number 7 unless he has a steady halves partner at club level that allows him to play only what suits him. We either have to jag a 80 k playmaker like we did with chez and sign him for a couple years and hope he fulfils his contract or rob peter to pay Paul in other positions.

A good 6 with Patience and a good kick, structured , but not flashy. We probably need about 450 to 500 maybe. Where do we get it otherwise ?

I agree on a fair bit of this thread, in relation to DCE really busting it every week and I rate him on that Top shelf in relation to up with the most valuable players in the game.
In reality he is on great coin and has been looked after very well financially and will continue with this long after he hangs up his boots, both as an involvement with Manly and will also feature as a footy presenter/ ex player media type role.....financially he is setup pretty well and deservedly so, but....
If he wants to take a pay cut to keep others around I am 100% happy to here this and an old warrior like Thommo, who earns a fair bit less has done just that.

It always cracks me up how people take the journos word as gospel for what players are getting paid

How many players do you think send a copy of their contracts to the likes of Kent, Rothfield and co ?

There's plenty of Canadian theatre critics they can fax their contracts too!

Glad we signed him for life, he is our best player and the leader. I love his mentality. If he had of went to Gold Coast we would of been in all sorts, now with the turbos we are building a potential grand final winning side
If he went to the Gold Coast we would have Elgey back then on top $$$$.Take that into account as I reckon Elgey would have got anything from 600k to 750k as we had no halves, DCE and Foran both gone at the time. We know how much value we would have got out of Elgey. So maybe we need tone down how much DCE is getting and take into account how much he saved us at the time on Elgey.
