Gidday mike, and yes I agree, the days of quality independent journalism are over. It just irks me when they claim to be independent when they are anything but.

Of course they are not independent.
But.. why do you think SMH is a leftie socialist paper??
It's owned by a big private corporation trying to make profits (like all private corporations try to make profits).
How could the overthrow of capitalism ever be in the interests of such an organisation, or the people who control it!!??

I have worked for both Murdoch and the once great Fairfax media empire. It saddens me to see how far Fairfax publications have fallen, due in most part to cost cutting. I can't see them lasting much longer.
Murdoch at least has the wealth to employ many more journalists than Fairfax so the breadth and timeliness of reports is much wider. Neither are Independent. Both have their biases.
If you want a quality read try The Australian Newspaper, particularly on a Saturday. It's the best of the bunch, imo.

If you want a quality read try The Australian Newspaper, particularly on a Saturday. It's the best of the bunch, imo.

Only paper I still buy, the weekend Australian.

My daughter is the head of the Advertising department for RMIT University in Melbourne, she said papers will be dead within a decade.

She went through this hour long explanation with me of how much better online advertising is, Google which we all use is just amazing at it, and Facebook as well, really interesting stuff.

There used to be a weekend paper called The National Times. There was a female writer who was like a hound in investigative journalism working for them who opened up so many behind the scenes political and business naughtiness. Great reading but it didnt last long.

Trouble with News Ltd is that its bias is dreadfully obvious. You only have to wait to see the manner of their front photos or caricatures as well as their editorials, to know who was in favour and who wasnt.

For example it was well known that Murdock favours Abbott as PM...he's made that clear in the past. Therefore not surprisingly Abbott is shown in glowing light especially in comparison to Turnbull, who was undermined time and again by the paper. But only as far as Liberal Party matters. Turnbull was always superior to the Labor leader, and Labor are always doing it wrong. That is until an article, again front page about Saving Albanese, that wonderful politician when he was up against the Telegraph's great nemesis Clover Moore. Moore receives more negative press from the Telegraph than any other individual and it always amuses me that she is re-elected by her constituents time and again.

The paper is a joke. Far better balanced news service with comments from the public from all quarters is The Conversation on the internet. Now that's where you get a truly broad view, with all angles considered.

If you watch the ABC it's so left leaning biased towards Labor led by Tony Jones and Sarah Fergusson ( both staunch Laborites) BUT if you watch Sky News it's so far right leaning led by people like Paul Murray.

Pretty much I have almost zero respect for any journo they all have barrows to push.

You are saying that in your perceptions news ltd and fairfax are both biased. And you (rather repeatedly) complain about fairfax being propaganda because you perceive it is biased. And you have had only positive things to say about what you perceive as the bias of news ltd.

I'm wondering, is there any possibility - any at all - that in your world you are biased? And if so, should you overtly inform of us of your bias (rather than pretending to inform us of unbiased truths) so we know how much salt to take with your opinion?
