Sack Des, Sign Shane Flanagan for 2022

I was a huge fan but I seriously think Des & DCE have lost the plot we are crap and seriously need to make some tough decisions to rebuild back to a position fitting a Manly team ie top four contenders it wont be this year or next year but we need to start building now

An iron clad $2 million a year contract? It would certainly top up his super and he would still have his Storm achievements...
Do you really think the Penns are going to shell out $2 million for a coach, that sort of money has to come out of their pockets

I thought you wrote couch - and we know the answer to that one!

I'd stick with them .He has tried showing the team loyalty .That isn't working ,sweeping changes are coming.

Ok... who would you have then?
I would keep Ballin and Monaghan, but bring in the Walker Brothers on a two year deal as head coaches. Their coaching style (contract football) is suited to the new rules. High risk, innovative, attack based football, that is aimed at developing our younger players (and assistant coaches) could take us into a Ballin led dynasty after they move on.

Can someone name a legit first grade couch with experience that is available? Yes Toovs is available but Penns won’t bring him back.

the only I can think of is Flanno, maybe Neil Henry. Paul Green coaching QLD

Flanno is our best option, with Matty Ballin as assistant

Has to be done. We know Flanagan will do anything to win, including drugs and cheating.

Just the guy Manly needs at this point.
Um no... dreaming. So we sack a coach... pay him out... sign another coach and probably pay him as much if not more? How about the players take some accountability as well? Des needs to pick the right players in the right positions totally agreed and Des has to move on from loyalty. We also have to get some troops back - Turbo, Haumole, Sirro, and even get Lawnton on the the park. But I am not sure Des told Walker to throw that cut out pass on tackle three or I didn't see him telling Schuster to tip on that/those ball/s or I didn't see him holding Boyle back in the scrum so that he was way too late to cover up the inside in the first try..... etc etc etc. But yes any sacking talk is laughable - we can't afford the payout. That being the case - it is not really even worth contemplating... just the reality.

Before people get into the idea that Flanagan should take over, just a reminder that his son Kyle could end up at the club and anyone that thinks Kyle is an option, are as delusional about his ability as his dad is

I havent seen a half back as bad as Flanagan since I last watched a Manly match.

Seriously, he was useless at the Roosters so no surprise to me he is double useless at Dogs.

It amuses me that people think that the club re-signed Des without realising we got soundly thrashed last year and were already getting soundly thrashed this year.
It also amuses me that people think the Penns will be prepared to pay out his contract early for this year and next year. I think that suggestion is particularly funny, in fact I'd say they are more likely to sell the club than to do that. And there is zero indications they are about to sell.

For what its worth, I think Des has persuaded the club that he is the man with a plan to take us through this period. His plan appears to be a long term plan not a sudden quick fix. As evidence of this I cite 1) the swift decision to allow AFB to depart, and 2) signing Tuipulotu on a 4 year deal. Who signs unproven reserve graders to a 4 year deal? No-one does! Certainly no-one who doesn't have a long term plan.

Anyway carry on with the various demands. I'm interested to see how this pans out. As the season goes on I do expect we'll get to see Haumole, Harper, Funa, Fainu Jnr, Koula etc getting a go in first grade. I don't expect to see Des pushed out the door but you all could be right, time will tell.

Totally totally agreed. I certainly think Des has started the overhaul. It will take at least another off season to get close and then 2023 when Burbo, Weeks, Koula, Sione Fainu, Saddler should all be in the side

From The Australian today:

Des Hasler has finally inked a new contract with Manly but given events over the opening month this season, there are no guarantees he will see out this year let alone next.

Hasler needs to make the top eight this season to get an extension for 2023. That is the least of his worries given the way Manly has played over the past month.

The Sea Eagles have been woeful and their have been few redeeming features to their play. Much has been made of their top-heavy salary cap but the shape of their cap isn’t the biggest issue.

Melbourne have spent more than a decade investing millions in a handful of players and then signing players to fill the space around them.

Manly, and Hasler’s problem, is that while their elite players have been poor, so have the players around them.

Captain Daly Cherry-Evans is yet to have a try assist or line break assist through the opening four rounds. At the same time, he has been worked over in defence, averaging more than 30 tackles a game.

Jake Trbojevic looks a shadow of his former self. The Sea Eagles have a reasonably soft draw coming up. They face only one of last year’s top eight sides — Penrith — in the next six weeks.

They should have Tom Trbojevic back for the game against the Gold Coast Titans in round six and the sense is that Sea Eagles officials want to see something from the side in coming weeks or Hasler will be shown the door.

There are no standout candidates to come in, although premiership winner Shane Flanagan is at the forefront of every club’s thoughts.

Flanagan is still serving a suspension from the NRL but he will no doubt ask the question of the chief executive Andrew Abdo in coming months, potentially weeks if he can see that a vacancy will arise at an existing club.

Stay tuned.

Not sure why the fascination in Flanagan. He has had any number of indiscretions that have seen him suspended a few times and was at the helm for their drug program and when the Sharks cheated the cap in ‘15&’17 but not their premiership year ‘16,apparently

Has Brent Read been reading the STs forum ?? I wonder what his nom de plume is ?

It's not fascination, imo it comes down to availability of experience at present. Indiscretions or not, 'Manly' or not, Flanagan's virtually the only one around who's not raw and could make a significant contribution to getting us out of this mess.

Well done to XV-1 for giving Brent Read a joke post (taken too literally by some) to run with as a ‘potential fact’.

I mean that sincerely....no...not really.

Flanagans a cheat and Manly is as appealing as a crusted over fanny to a potential new coach.
