From The Australian today:
Des Hasler has finally inked a new contract with Manly but given events over the opening month this season, there are no guarantees he will see out this year let alone next.
Hasler needs to make the top eight this season to get an extension for 2023. That is the least of his worries given the way Manly has played over the past month.
The Sea Eagles have been woeful and their have been few redeeming features to their play. Much has been made of their top-heavy salary cap but the shape of their cap isn’t the biggest issue.
Melbourne have spent more than a decade investing millions in a handful of players and then signing players to fill the space around them.
Manly, and Hasler’s problem, is that while their elite players have been poor, so have the players around them.
Captain Daly Cherry-Evans is yet to have a try assist or line break assist through the opening four rounds. At the same time, he has been worked over in defence, averaging more than 30 tackles a game.
Jake Trbojevic looks a shadow of his former self. The Sea Eagles have a reasonably soft draw coming up. They face only one of last year’s top eight sides — Penrith — in the next six weeks.
They should have Tom Trbojevic back for the game against the Gold Coast Titans in round six and the sense is that Sea Eagles officials want to see something from the side in coming weeks or Hasler will be shown the door.
There are no standout candidates to come in, although premiership winner Shane Flanagan is at the forefront of every club’s thoughts.
Flanagan is still serving a suspension from the NRL but he will no doubt ask the question of the chief executive Andrew Abdo in coming months, potentially weeks if he can see that a vacancy will arise at an existing club.
Stay tuned.
