The Sea Eagles are involved in a bitter payout battle with Trent Barrett, delaying an official announcement on his departure from the club.

Barrett wants to be paid until midway through next year, while the club wants to cut all ties - and wages - immediately.

Meanwhile, the club has back-flipped on plans to hand the coaching job to Michael Maguire in 2019, with John Cartwright set to get the position.

Maguire was keen on the job and in Manly’s sights - but assistant coach Cartwright shapes as a much cheaper option.

A former Test and premiership-winning forward at Manly, Cartwright had a fair record in his time as head coach of the Titans and already knows the Manly systems, having worked with Barrett this year.


If true the penns are dumber than I thought Maguire was interested in the job but instead they pick the cheaper option haha when will they learn

Not his fault Barrett keeps picking ********s like parker uate Kelly and suli. Do you think he coaches them to be crap? Its the stock we have there are too many duds in our team.

Not one would start at another club

The issue is he doesn't coach them or what he coaches is wrong. Suli needs a tough pre-season and a coach to pick his potential back up. Kelly has improved and already has other clubs interested in him. Fix his defence and he is a definite keeper. Not sure what is wrong with 20 year old Paseka? Had a great first year in first grade!

Back in round 1, 2016 when Barrett selected his first team to play the dishlickers I shared a story of a Company I worked for back in the day who realised within hours that they had made a wrong choice for a senior executive position and they had the guts to simply say we got it wrong, let’s just accept that and end this immediately and wear the cost, learn from it and move on. I suggested Penn & Co do just that with Barrett, but here we are three years later in this debacle.

Mr. Penn, I am one of your strongest supporters but you got the Barrett appointment wrong and you are getting the Cartwright appointment wrong. Show us you have learnt something, if you haven’t yet signed a contract don’t, if you have, suck it up and bite the bullet and wear the cost to walk him immediately. You will be financial miles ahead in the long run.
