why does the ref always call held when ****s are being dragged back.

I'm pretty sure for a change the ref is doing something right.

IIRC, they changed things a few years back requiring the ref to call held as soon as forward momentum stops (or if both the attackers feet are off the ground)

Except sometime they do... and sometimes they don't

Surely a fit Turbo at least comes close to trying to stop that earlier Melb try? Didn't look like he hit speed to get over there.

Could be wrong only caught the end of one replay

First time I have ever heard that being the reason.
It's been a thing for well over a decade. I'm sure @Big Pete will remember what I'm talking about but I believe a player was seriously injured being dragged back and the ref didn't call held which was controversial and led to what we see in modern day.

My mind is thinking John Skandalis but I don't remember the exact incident only that it was a specific incident that caused the rule change.

Its odd to see a player calling for a HIA on himself. Something is off with Turbo.

A shoulder to the chin would probably have me in a HIA also

I know they have to protect the players, but all these sin bins are getting a bit much now.

Gus Gould is right; the game has become more about the referees and the NRL performing PR for "player welfare" than it is about the actual football.

That last one on Munster was barely a fraction late. It was a shoulder charge so I'm ok with a penalty but a sin bin?

When they have such a huge impact on the game, they have got to be used more sparingly. This smells like the penalty crackdown a few years ago where the NRL blinked before the players did. Interesting times.
