I only caught the last twenty or so, but I thought Manly were rewarded for their patience. It would have been easy for them to go full tilt, but they just kept probing the Storm line and playing for field position. They got the timing wrong on their set-plays, but they didn't give away the penalty or throw the desperation pass, they just played it smart knowing they had the four point lead.

It eventually took it's toll on the Storm. The game was there when Olam turned the ball over deep in Manly's corner. That was the moment for the Storm defence to muscle up but the Sea Eagles really did a great job of working it out and DCE nailed the kick. Then in response, Paseka bounces off of Welch to put Croker into space. DCE gets to put an attacking kick up, Coates makes the mistake and Paseka once again puts the finishing touches in.

I'd have to go back and watch the earlier 60 minutes because the scoreboard was definitely a factor, but it just seemed like Manly completely out-muscled Melbourne. The loss of Asofa-Solomona took it's toll and Manly did well to turn it into a slogfest.

Is there any aspect of someone's game more overrated in the history of Rugby League than Xavier Coates and the high ball? I don't think I've seen him catch one since his debut which he has been dining out on his whole career.

Is it actually though? See just as much stuff about soft free kicks being inconsistent and favouring certain teams and whatnot.

The only 2 matches I've watched in full I was being paid to work at the GF 😂. Can't stand it

It has it's issues for sure and of course these are the wrong fans to try and convert BUT honestly, the NRL could learn so much about how that organisation runs things.

A case in point, they had an issue with players ducking their heads to get soft free kicks, so they came out and said anyone ducking their head gets hit high, it is too bad and play on. Stamped out diving quick smart.

I can't stand the diving. Both teams were guilty of it last night, it was a ****show. What can NRL refs do to stop it?

In the NHL refs can send players off for Embellishment. In most cases this happens when someone is trying to sell a penalty, and both players will be sent off. But the penalties in ice hockey are only 2mins, and if they are coincidental then it doesn't really affect the game at all. The players called for Embellishment are also likely to fined after the game ($2000 or something like that, but their salary cap is also much higher).

It's hard to bring anything like this into rugby league because of the interchange system. The ref could send a player off to a doctor's bench as soon as they stay down, stay off for 5mins to get their injury checked. The problem with the NRL is coaches always find ways to manipulate rules, like I don't think this would work because they would figure out how to get free interchanges or some sort of advantage.

It seems like there's a need for something lesser than an HIA, that discourages players from acting injured to draw a call. Maybe the solution is to take the player off to be checked with no player replacement. If they're not hurt they will play on, if they're hurt they will want to see the doctor.

What is the record for number of sin bins in a season? This season may be challenging that record. Kind of ruining games.
Well, there's sin-bins for violent/dangerous conduct, which I'm 100% in favour of and then there's sin-bins for repeat infringements (inside the 10 etc) where maybe there should just be a team fine or something.

It's only my view, but sometimes games improve once a player's been sent off/sinbinned as the team with the lesser number of players lifts.

If the players didn't do the actions (such as hip-drop type movements in defence), the referees wouldn't feel they have to make a call on a penalty offence (whether it's too harsh or bang on) and there's no sinbins/sendoffs.

Make any player who's not clearly injured (by clearly, I mean there's blood and gore, an obvious bone break, the player screaming or priests giving the last rites etc) go off with no replacement for 5 minutes. If there is an injury, then obviously the replacement comes on.

Some players just look like they're lying there rubbing their supposedly injured knee but then, hey, a couple of minutes of that and a sip of the blue or red Gatorade and the player's fit to go again and the boys have got their breath back/plans organised again.

But you're right, the NRL and the Clubs are in an arms race where the NRL create the rule and the clubs - as is their right and job, like the Storm did with gang-tackling etc) - go "well, the rule doesn't say we can't do Plan F, so that's do that and see what happens!"
