Yeah he does like James Roberts, Matt Gillett or mutagi. Oh that's right we missed out there
Sometimes things are out of the Immortals control when he misses out on a player feathered friend ie; Players prefered living location /salary cap funds etc ....
and always remember ......

Sir Alex Ferguson made Man U great when they were ordinary.
Not into soccer really, but from memory Alex Ferguson was ready to get the sack after several years of inconsistent form, however they managed to sneak into a league cup or FA cup final which saved his job, then they bought Eric Cantona , won a league championship and the rest is history.

Could have said the same with Hasler early years ...but ended with massive success.
A big part of HIS success was the signing of Ben Kennedy and Jamie Lyon....outsiders....
Another part is building together which takes time, particularly with 1.2 million less than the other teams.
I doubt Flanagan would have won without Maloney and Lewis or the Storm minus even Cam Smith....need a bit of perspective here.

I posted this earlier this season https://silvertails.net/threads/absolutely-pathetic.51811/page-3#post-899237

ok i got bored so with Google I found out the ones in bold were Manly players.

O'Connell & Paskins made their debut for Manly as a captain-coach.

Pepperell was a pom. Lowe a kiwi.

GF winners: Willey, Stanton, Fulton, Hasler. Apart from these four men other Manly coaches to reach a GF were O'Connell 51, Arko 57/59, Hunter 68, Ritchie 82 & Toovey 2013.

No Manly team has ever made it to a GF under a coach who wasn't a Manly player.

JOHNSTON, Harold 1947
STEHR, Ray 1947-48
MULLINS, George - 1949
O'CONNELL, Wally 1950-52
BULL, Roy 1953

NORMAN, Ray 1954
DEVERY, Pat 1955-56
ARTHURSON, Kenneth 1957-61
WILLEY, Ron 1962
PASKINS, Tony - 1963

PEPPERELL, Russ - 1964-65
O'CONNELL, Wally 1966-67
HUNTER, George 1968-69
WILLEY, Ron 1970-74
STANTON, Frank 1975-79
THOMSON, Allan 1980
RITCHIE, Ray - 1981-82
FULTON, Robert 1983-88
THOMPSON, Alan 1989

LOWE, Graham 1990-92
FULTON, Robert 1993-99
SHARP, Peter 1999, 2003
HASLER, Des 2004-11
TOOVEY, Geoff 2012-15

BARRETT, Trent 2016-17

Manly became a great side because of the role played by Ken Arthurson. He set the template upon which Manly sides have since succeeded. Mind you he had the advantage of using money well to get the players he wanted. But the tradition he set up has since made the Manly side such a hated and well respected entity.

The Manly club and for whatever reason has previously and historically have certainly had a high percentage or preponderance of ex players for coaches but some of the other longer term and traditional clubs have also no doubt had a reasonable number of ex players taking on coaching roles as well . In Manly "s case , of course they were just fortunate to have been able to field some very strong and competitive sides particularly in the seventies and eighties era , and so naturally this would have also reflected well for the respective coaches not with standing their own coaching prowess , and whether they had a prior playing connection or not . Graham Lowe was slightly unlucky not to have taken the quite formidable Manly 91 side to a G F appearance , but again even in the nineties , there were still some pretty fair Manly teams . In recent times and trends with quite a few players extending their playing longevity and media opportunities and so on , there may be less motivation and tendency for prospective and suited ex players to wish to take up coaching roles but of course good quality coaches are still just as important as good quality players for future N R L seasons . And even regardless if they have had a previous affiliated club connection .
