PRE-GAME DISCUSSION: Knights v Manly [Round 12, 2021]

Always a tough game at Newcastle for us but as long as we can maintain the intensity we should be able to get this one in the bag. They are struggling, they were poor what I saw against the Cowboys

So Knights may have Ponga and Best back.

I sometimes feel that it's always against Manly that other team's best players return, but I'm sure that's just looking at things through Maroon and white glasses.

It'll take some good man management to keep the team up this week (probably) so glad Des is in charge. Plus it looks like Tom wont let things slide. Becoming a real leader.

I will be heading to this game and it will be my 1st time attending McDonald Jones Stadium..
Actually a good place to watch footy. Nice and relaxed. I''ve found the opposition fans to be friendly too. Maybe that was just luck.
Funny thing, if you park out the back and there's a trotting meeting on, you walk right through another whole event. Not on the actual track though!

This knights team has been poor all year. Even with Ponga and co in the side. If we turn up and focus purely on completing our sets and playing smart we will put 30plus on them easy. I think the playing group are badly offside with Obrian and Tgey don’t seem to want to lift for him. I can’t see anything but a strong win fir us. Guac being out is a big loss.

The hard thing about you changing your avatar is I initially think:

"Gawd, there's someone else substituting g's for h's"

Then..."ah tis but Waz13"

Jamie Soward has Manly 3rd in his weekly rankings list and knights 15th so if things go to plan, we should get the two points.

I've been there (in our colours) when we've beaten the Knights comprehensively and most of their fans have been friendly and up for a chat. A much more welcoming atmosphere than some other grounds.

The ref calls always go heavily against us at Marathon. Even more so than other grounds. Expect a lot of 6 agains and 50-50 calls to the Knights.

Haha. Yes the Lloyd Braun pic has been a work in progress. The gum episode might be one of my favs if all time. And that scene in the ep where Kramer, Jerry and Lloyd are just sitting round chewing gum could be likened to many experiences of posters on this forum. We all have a chew on all things Manly! The to Tge won’t change anytime soon I don’t think as I’m always feverishly typing out posts in my phone. Haha

I'll be very interested in one area of selection that Des makes for this game. Will he play it conservative and bring in Cust at 5/8 and return Schuster to the forwards. Or will he leave Schuster at 5/8 and use Cust on the bench (if at all).

Looking closely at the last two games, it was obvious that DCE was dominating on the right in the first game, and servicing Harper and Saab, with Turbo making that extra man. It was very effective. However with Schuster being given more ball in the second game, the play moved to the left and it was his influence that saw Parker and Garett having a field day with Turbo making the extra man.

Manly has had a stunted backline for years. Suddenly we have what we've needed. Playmakers on both sides of the field and as a consequences the centres and wingers are getting more room to attack. Foran was doing something similar before his injury. This takes the pressure off DCE who has been the focus of other teams in shutting the Sea Eagles backline down.

Using Cust will probably still see us win against the Knights. But I don't think it will be as smoothly. Manly has a ball player of sorts in Jake, who starts some of the plays so it is not necessary to send Schuster back, where his skill is stifled. The balance is there with Schuster on the left, DCE on the right. Parker's sudden rise is because he is getting more space, and though his pace still concerns me, he is doing a good job.

It will be interesting to see which way Des goes. Regrettably I think he'll be again conservative

If Guac is out I think we just need a like for like replacement for him. After the Parra game I would not be moving Schu from 6. Maybe Lawman to second row. Kids bigger than I thought.

I think the problem might be a lack of available second rowers. Sure Lawton did well on the weekend and could handle an edge, but I doubt he’s up to 80 mins. Keppie is still a question mark on an edge for mine too.

If Guac’s out then I hope Sirro is back otherwise we’re short and Schu back to 12 may be the best option for the team.

Actually in the past two games Keppie has been outstanding. The forwards in the past two games have been top notch in general and look reinvigorated. Helps to place the backs in a position to create serious attacking raids.

I will be surprised if Ponga will risk coming back too early from a groin injury this close to origin. Groin inquires take a long time to heal.
