Other games [Round 24, 2021]

If either or both of tonight's teams make the Finals ... neither will last past the first week.

Close game, but low quality.
Sure was low quality, both teams had plenty of errors in them.

He might be this and might be that but Pearce stepped up and clinched it, along with Ponga.

Seriously they're paying Fifi $1.2m to play 50 min standing like a statue out wide waiting for the ball to come his way but when it does he's 70% flat footed. Doesn't go in field looking to break on quick play the balls. It's just sh*t coaching and a brain dead lazy c**t.

I don’t know how he can sit in the same change rooms as his team mates……just embarrassing.

Joey couldn’t stop praising Best last night. I on the other hand noticed his woeful defence, his opposite centre got past him quite easily a few times. If we play Newcastle we need to target best, he can’t move well laterally. Haumole and Harper can carve him up.

So another big bustling centre that is dodgy defensively, who’d of thought?

This is my biggest gripe about the direction the game has gone in Australia over the past 15 or so years (basically coinciding with the formation of the U/20's comp). There have been all these hyped up kids coming into first grade with big wraps on how they play. With the ball in hand they are either Nathan Cleary like with their skills, or Moses Suli like runners.

But very few of them are also good defenders.

Even this year, people rave about the likes of Sam Walker and Reece Walsh. And yeah with the ball in hand they have proven to be very good players. But other teams coaches quickly worked out that these kids can't tackle to save themselves. It even got to the point where Trent Robinson had to not play Walker for a number of games because he was being targeted in defense and it was hurting his team.

While the basketball scores we're seeing in the game might be liked by some ... I'm one of the old school brigade who believe that a good player is one who can attack AND defend, not just one trick ponies who are only good in attack.

And the change in direction in Australia with the emphasis on attacking football has had a flow on effect to international football (when its played). Australia is no longer the clear cut top of the pops. The lack of defensive skills in the latest generation of players has actually brought the Kangaroos back to the field. We now play the game like the Poms, attack first, worry about defense later. And its not a good thing IMO. Not good at all.

I tell ya guys, one major factor that I really hope that Bozo passed on to Scott was that a rugby league player needs to be a good defender as well as an attacking weapon.

All year long referees/bunker been pinging non existent obstructions, but if you want a game winning field goal you can obstruct & grab opponents all you want and no one does anything.

How many times do we see a fair try denied because of some perceived inside/outside shoulder bull$hit that 90% of the time has zero impact on the actual play (and is usually just a beaten defender playing for an obstruction penalty) ... yet something like this is totally legal??

It was Newcastle mate - they're allowed to do whatever they want. Don't know what it is about them but the refs have been gifting them matches all year.

Nailed it !! mickqld, Fifita scores of a simple 10m run and bump to the try line, then puts his cue in the rack for the rest of the game. This guy is a football imposter, hands on hips bludging in the backline, if we can see this imagine the poor suffering Titan supporters, they've been duded. Big Mal M signed of on this, he should hang his head in shame.

He only wants it when they are 10M out from tryline.
He's a show pony pure and simple !!, doesn't help out when defending on their line, hand on hips, looks like a huge teapot. Why was he on the bench for the first 30min, ...he's on 1.2m, if he was playing with us, our fans would be giving it to him. Why are the Titan fans so passive about this situation.... maybe most are on centrelink money and bumming around the beaches who knows !!.... wake up !!

Well thought out post.
I think that's why we are so happy with our two cut-price centres, Harpo and Parker. They can both tackle, and saving a try is as valuable as scoring one.
The brag videos we see these days, backed by blaring rap music, are of kids scoring long-range tries; never showing how they defend. I'd like to see such a brag video of Jurbo, it would be bone-rattling good, particularly if backed by an AC/DC track such as Thunderstruck.
