Still, Penrith losing at least means another Manly record remains intact.
Only South Sydney (1925), Manly-Warringah (1995) and Penrith (2021) have won their opening 12 games of a season.
Only Manly in 1995 got to 13 and beyond in the regular season. We ended up with 15 in a row which is now still the single season record.
In their respective 13th games:
Souths didn't actually lose as such. 1925 had a 13 round season with 9 teams, so each team had a bye. Souths went 12-0 that year, then were undefeated to win the Premiership. In fact, the next game they lost was in Round 4 of 1926 Glebe beat them 14-10 at the SCG. That was technically 18 wins in a row and 23 if you count the 5 City Cup wins to end 1924.
After losing the Minor Prelim Final to the stacked to the hilt Drongos to end 1994, Manly won 12 in a row to open 1995 before we had too much of the Right Stuff for the New Kids on the Block, the Western Reds 44-24 at Brookvale to win our 13th in a row. We would then beat Illawarra 18-12 at Brookie and the Worms 28-6 at Worm Stadium before the Chooks ended our run with a 16-21 win at Brookvale.
Before tonight, Penrith's last loss was the 2020 Grand Final. Before that their last loss was Round 5, 2020 when they lost 16-10 to the Worms at wankfest ... er ... bankwest. That's 29 wins from their last 30 games before tonight.
