EXPECT the Sea Eagles to announce former backrower Luke Williamson as Manly’s NSW Cup coach next week.

The Sea Eagles will play in the second-tier premiership this year with Williamson, now back from a playing stint in England, in charge.

The club is also hopeful of announcing a sponsor or two over the coming weeks.

Ahead of the 2011 NRL season, the Sea Eagles remain without a major sponsor.

Plenty but surely someone who did more than ran with his head down and arse up. What can he pass on? Sounds like some Kiwi players  ;)

Mate the bloke played 261 premiership games, kicked 243 goals, scored 36 tries with a total score of 633. Hardly a slouch. What he lacked in talent he more than made up for in heart and effort. I would have rathered Williamson's effort than any of our other back rowers missing talent towards the back end of last year. Not entirely sure you know what you're talking about Darren.

Good old Willow. He will provide experience and a footballing brain. The fact he has played games is a bonus. Young enough to relate to the current kids coming through.

You dont have to be a great player to be a great coach. Jose Mourinho.. one of soccers worlds best managers.. never played at the highest level. Maradona did and he was an awful coach.

You cant judge Willow on his playing days when he is a coach. Give him a go.

As an aside how did Wayne Bennett go as a player? Played for QLD police?

How did Bellache go? An average first grader

Great skills does not equal coach

Agree 100% Isz.  How did Wally Lewis go as a coach??  Willow will go alright.  He is a down to eath bloke with a good sense of humour.

Bellyache (he who shall be known as Martini)..average first grader-below average coach. No premierships,no SoO series!!

Willo will be a great asset to the club, he and his wife were a really strong force behind the scenes keeping not only the players as a tight knit bunch, but his wife played a big part in keeping all the wifes and girlfriends together as a group, we suffered a great deal when they left.  He is a smart and funny guy who relates well to almost everyone.  He also has a real flair in the media arena something we currently are not so great at.  I think it is great to see Willo back

It sounds like Willo should be our marketing manager.

wayne Bennett played for australia

From 1970, Bennett played football for Warwick, and also in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership for Past Brothers, Ipswich and Souths. He was a talented winger and goal-kicker and represented Queensland 7 times between 1971 and 1972. Bennett also played two tour matches for Australia on the 1972 tour of New Zealand. After that he had a spell playing for Huddersfield

Can ya give us a name mate ? You are into most of them at the moment in 1 way or another haha

I watched the 1990 grand recently where canberra beat penrith.
Bellyache came on in the last 2 mins when the game was already won. He was terrible. Made a couple of errors if his brief appearance and the jerk had the ball in his hands when the full time siren sounded so we got to see him celebrate like hed won the game for canberra.

Seconded Fonz and MissKate's post is spot on. Part of our downfall over the last couple of years is the impact off the field that the departure of players like Hicks, Willo and Beaver has had. There's been a number of reasons why the "chemistry" has not been there for two years but don't under estimate Willo's contribution to the tightness of the group.
At our very best, Willo wasn't part of the 17 (and wasn't on GF day 2008) but he deserved a ring as 18th man as much as anyone.
