As far as how the team lined up yesterday, Des's hands were literally tied by the fact that every 5/8 and every edge forward we have is currently on the injured list.
Foran, Walker, Cust, Schuster, Aloiai, Sironen, Davey, Olakau'atu, Gosiewski. All out injured. Even just one of those players being available could have made all the difference yesterday.
If Des had played Croker at 5/8 and Lawton at hooker, the way the rest of the forwards would have looked (likely that Sips would have started at prop and Marty in the back row) ... that would have left Saddler as THE only recognised forward on the bench with any first grade experience, and he's still actually a development player. And don't give me this crap about Suli could be a back rower. He's lazy enough as a centre without expecting him to do the work of a forward. And while he was selected yesterday, Ben Trbojevic was there more because we needed another forward on the bench (which is not Tuipulotu) than because Des actually thinks he's ready for first grade.
Think for a moment. Counting Jake as a prop, going into the game we had 6 healthy front rowers (Jake, Sips, Marty, Keppie, Paseka and Saddler). And 4 of them are starting out of necessity. You honestly think an 18 year old rookie would have played if Des had any other choice? With all due respect to the kid, I do honestly think Ben Trbojevic is probably still 6-12 months from being fully ready for first grade
In all reality and with as little disruption to the team as possible after Shoe's late withdrawal, the side that ran out was probably as good as we could do given who is and isn't available. Was Funa the right choice for 5/8? Probably not, but outside of completely changing the whole team dynamic and running with probably one forward on the bench, who else could have?
Maybe in hindsight the better thing might have been to have Funa at fullback and Tom playing 5/8, at least in attack. But I can also see why Des didn't do that.
