NRL offer freebies to Roosters-Storm NRL finals clash

Fearing a small preliminary final crowd, the NRL has given ANZ Stadium thousands of free tickets for Saturday night’s blockbuster between Sydney Roosters and Melbourne at the cross-town SCG.

The ticket giveaway will shame Sydney rugby league fans after Canberra’s GIO Stadium was sold out this week within five minutes for Friday evening’s grand final qualifier.

An ANZ Stadium email to members was titled: “SPECIAL TICKET OFFER.”

Roosters fans celebrate victory during the NRL Qualifying Final match between the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs.
The Daily Telegraph also understands the NRL will use a Telstra database to offer further freebies. Each ANZ Stadium member can claim up to four tickets to attend the SCG elimination final.

Early indications suggest a modest crowd of 25,000 will attend the Roosters-Storm match although officials hope a late walk-up coupled with fine weather — which is forecast — may increase that figure to a respectable 30,000.

The ANZ Stadium email to members – obtained by The Daily Telegraph – read: “With no NRL finals game to be played at ANZ Stadium this weekend we are pleased to be able to work with the NRL to provide our members with a special ticket offer to watch the Roosters take on the Storm at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday night.”

An NRL spokesman stressed there had been similar giveaways this year, including tickets to State of Origin III at ANZ Stadium.

The Daily Telegraph also has emails showing free ticket give aways for last weekend’s South Sydney-Manly elimination final.

ANZ Stadium emailed its 15,000 members in a late attempt to bolster the crowd for what should be one of the best matches of the NRL season.

“Members will have the opportunity to access up to four (4) complimentary tickets to this match per member,” stated the ANZ Stadium email to members. “Tickets are available on a first in first served basis until allocation is exhausted. There is a ticket limit of four (4) per member and should you redeem tickets they must be used on the night.”

NRL officials claim a reciprocal arrangement between the SCG Trust and ANZ Stadium would enable an exchange of memberships to ensure members’ grandstands were well accommodated for big games.

Ticket sales have been sluggish given the Roosters’ modest fan base, Melbourne’s struggle to bring fans interstate and difficulties associated with watching rugby league at the SCG.

An ANZ Stadium member said an offer of four complimentary tickets just three days before kick-off indicated a mediocre crowd was expected to attend.

“I have been a member for around 10 years and I can’t remember this happening before. It seems strange the offer would come just three days before the game,” he said.

It comes after 27,000 tickets for the Canberra-Souths game GIO Stadium started selling at 10am on Tuesday and were sold out by 10.05am.

There was also a free ticket give away for last weekend’s Rabbitohs-Sea Eagles final.

An email from the NRL, the NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge and ANZ Stadium, also obtained by The Daily Telegraph, read: “As your school is participating in this year’s NSW Premier’s School Sport Challenge, up to four (4) FREE tickets are available for each student and staff member to redeem for the match.

“Tickets are limited so be sure to secure them quickly for what will be a great evening of rugby league.”

The NRL will conduct a media opportunity – involving former Roosters and Storm players Bryan Fletcher, David Trewhella, Russell Fairfax and Anthony Quinn – on Thursday to try and grow ticket sales.

Well done to Canberra for selling out the Prelim Final at GIO.

What, the Chooks might not even half fill the SCG for their Prelim against Melbourne? The two Grand Finalists from 2018, the top two on the ladder in 2019 and they can't even come close to selling out the SCG?

And they are building a brand new 45,000 seat stadium that the Chooks will get to play out of.....which if their attendances at the SFS and SCG are anything to go by they will struggle to even half fill the new place unless its a Final.

Manly fans don't travel they say. Chooks fans don't even travel to their own ground.

Congratulations Greenberg

You have run our great game to the ground

You have run our great game down to the point where you need to give away free tickets to fill the empty stadiums that you are responsible for

You are breaking the spirit of our great game and are turning away fans in droves

The sooner we see the end of your inept running of the game the better .

The NRL league is out of your league

You could not organize a root in a brothel

Same thing was happening for our match. Schools that participated in rugby league comps were offered 4 tickets per child and staff member. That would be about 3400 tickets at my school alone if everyone took the offer.
They did the same thing last year too. So nothing new here.

I reckon the roosters fans are either:

ticked off about not being able to buy their regular season seats (yes we were not the only club to suffer that slight by the nrl)

Also they are most probably finals exhausted, guaranteed to be In the finals every year means it has lost it appeal

Phantom Race meetings are a thing. Punters bookmakers and big screens showing events at other venues.

This is kinda the opposite, the game is on but all the fans are drinking latte around Bondi.

The new stadium will have holgrams of fans to fill in the empty seats so that it looks like every game will be played before a full house

When a Sydney-based club only has 5 or 6 fans of its own - Nick Politis, ‘Thankyou’ Mr Bouris, Jimbo Packer, Scott Cam and any Roosters’ board members I missed, it does make it hard.

A multitude of reasons, some of which have been covered here.

Others could be
Venue - As much as the old girl is an iconic venue, the SCG is far from an NRL fan friendly venue.
Circumstance - How many Storm and Roosters supporters would have bought tickets for the GF? Especially Storm fans, travelling to Sydney twice in a week, yeah right!
Time - 7.50 on Saturday night? No curtain raiser, getting out of Moore Park with kids at that time of night - too late for the kids ( Last week we didn't get home 'till 10.45 and we drove)
4.00 would be better, make a day of it, pre match lunch or dinner at EQ afterwards but doesn't suit TV
Could make it a Super Saturday - back that up with Canberra game at 6.30 - 7.00 but that doesn't suit TV either.
Both winners would then have the same recovery time.
Marketing - How dumb are they? Canterbury Cup GF as a standalone game the next day at Bankwest! Why not put this game on as curtain raiser? The players would love it and saves $$ hiring Bankwest.

Then in Canberra, The Jersey Flegg GF is between Souffs and Raiders so there's a missed opportunity there too.
Their reasoning? It would favour the Raiders, don't look at the big picture will you NRL, but the Canterbury Cup at Bankwest favours Wenty ( Parra reserves).
Apathy

I went out to ANZ last week with complimentary tickets - Category 2 that a mate got free and couldn't make use of them so offered them to me.
Wonder how many were free?

Crap times to suit TV are a big part of the problem.
I was talking to a bloke who wanted to take his 6 year old but with the late start, he said it be after midnight by the time he got home. That is not suitable for many people.

I also got offered 4 free tickets to the game, same with last weeks Manly - Souths game.

The TV ratings may be higher for the grand final at night but that is because everyone is at home watching it. When it was on in the afternoon lots of people would have a BBQ with 20 of their mates around watching the game, the actual viewing numbers would have been higher as there would have been people watching it at that BBQ who hadn't watched a game all year and wouldn't if they were at home.

So pathetic and of top of that the NSW Govt knocking down decent venues (Allianz) and refurbishing ugly stadiums (ANZ).

Just clueless people!!

Once the 2 billion dollar curtain goes up in the new refurbished stadium Greenturd will not need to give away any more free tickets. A win for the game
