Manly's greatest tackles

Matai on Groth, Tyrell and about 50 others....
I must say that Jake has the best tackling technique I have seen since before this BS wrestling started and would be up with the best all round defenders in any era....how the refs call "Get off"in what I see a far more dominant tackle that this grappling crap is hard to digest?

Ian Roberts on Gary Coyne 1991 at Brookie.
I think he got him twice that game but one of them was an absolute monster hit.
Robbo was a beast.
He hit a St George bloke at Brookie one day, absolutely smashing him, and got into trouble for patting him on the back.
He was making a statement.
Some of his hits in origin were beyond belief.
He would be almost horizontal at point of impact.

I was at Brookie one day and the great Beaver smashed a poor Warrior player coming out from his own line. The victim ended up in Disney land and all his mates came charging in to seek revenge on Beaver.

I was a bit worried but in reality who was ever going to take a swing at Beaver , I'll bet no one ever did in his career .

Toovey on Meninga , stopping him dead.
I remember that one. Was that tall young winger with a silly rats tail from the Warriors...never quite made it. Then Sione Faumuina charged in a tried to push Beaver around, but the replays showed it was just a class tackle...

edit - Patrick Ah Van. And yes I just wasted 15 minutes googling Warriors teams from the early 2000s to find that one...

Nik Kosef on Martin Lang in origin.
John Lang complained about how high it was but it was just a great ball & all tackle that took advantage of Lang's upright running style.
Wasn't the first time it happened to him.

Couple that stick in my mind

Parra stadium, 2007 I think it would have been. PJ Marsh breaks through and is a certainly to score, somehow B Stewart comes from behind and stops him 1m out

The next was in Melbourne, maybe 2012 ? We never win down there, we are up most of the game by a small margin, with a minute or so to go Slater breaks through and commentators are calling game over, but Ben Farrar grabs a leg and stops him

You thinking this one on Mick Potter ? don't think it is Brookie but a good hit nonetheless

There's a great still photo of this tackle which I can't seem to find on google - but it's Chimp standing over Potter giving him a gobful with dust still coming up from the hit.

That's what I was thinking....
Only yes, the memory got showed up.
Kogarah not Brookie and no pats on the back just a good verbal.
Poor old Potter thought he was length of the field, under the posts.

That was probably the 2009 game at Olympic Park. Farrar was an excellent defender. Pity we didn't see more of him.

I remember Dan Stains from the sharks resenting a tackle from Huamono and carrying on with it .
Huamono was trying to walk away but had had enough and began giving it to Stains Big time.

Ridge was one player who joined the fray ( to stop Stains getting killed )
I thought it was when Stains played for the Tigers that happened. He was out cold before he hit the ground once Haumono started swinging

I was thinking 09 but thought that might have been a bit early for Farrar to be part of our squad ? and think Brett played most of that season too

Farrar joined that season. His first game was vs Penrith - the one where Wolf pulled off that showstopping tackle. He played right through 2010, then headed to Superleague for a year because of salary cap pressures. He returned in 2012, but injuries prevented him from playing any more 1st grade games.

Stewart played in only five 1st grade games in 2009.

many great ones listed ..... I have to include Jason Kings hits on the Burgess bros in 2014? at Brooky and also on Kasiano at Brooky that also involved a head clash that broke Kasianos cheekbone and/or jaw

From the era I started watching league (80's).....

Roberts was a beast.

Tooves was the best small man tackler ever. Many was the time he would sit bigger players like Meninga, Roach, Sironen, Lazarus and Harragon on their backsides. Run at the small blonde guy they said, we'll just run straight over the top of him they said.....lol

Beaver was the complete player. Could score tries, set them up and he was a top class defender who came up with some hits that would have had opposition players checking to see if they still had intact ribs.

Spud Carroll put in some big hits. Although he was the ball carrier, I'll never forget Paul Harragon lining him up at Marathon.....knocked himself out but Spud barely felt it lol.

Jorge has came up with some bit hits. He learned his trade from.....

Steve Matai. Damn I miss watching Skivy play.
