Manly's greatest tackles

Wombat hit Steve Rogers in the middle of the SCG in the 78 GF in a tackle that was plain murderous.
Sludge got up eventually, but I doubt he had ever been hit that hard in his whole career.
I wish I had the skills to put it up to see.

Mate
I was there
By memory it was the replay with manly running to the hill or Randwick end and sludge left the field soon after

I also won the 2sm secret supporter that day in a competition where you had to ask the a person if they were from 2sm

I did and he was and got 200 bucks

Not bad for a 15 year old kid and cemented my quest to never miss a manly GF

A different era whete 12 and 13 year olds were allowed to camp outside the green doors of the SCG turnstyles Be able to get served at the bat and ball and blackberry nip brandavino and port cost less than 3 dollars a flag in

Oops did I mention we were innocent 15 year old south coast kids

That is massive !!!
I am NOT F**KIN JEALOUS !!!
And I'll bet the 2sm dude wore Amco Bogart's.
Great days...

Yep
And desert boots

Desert boots, Amcos and a Miller shirt were de rigeur. My great regret is going to school on the day of the GF replay. My mate wagged it and saw the game from the Sheridan Stand.

Wombat could punish people for making a break. That Steve Rogers tackle was brutal. Capped off his match winning performance in that 78 GF replay.

Some great memories here of some great tacklers. Honourable mentions to those not already mentioned:

John Harvey's ball running and tackling style were basically the same thing: drive your forearm into the opposition and see how they like it. Probably would have been rubbed out of contemporary league. Apparently even Beetson was scared of Harv.

Johnny Gibbs (yes): superb and courageous low tackler. I remember him scythe down a fast running Norths back in one game at NSO with a beautiful low tackle.

Ian Martin (of course); recently lionised on another thread.

Mal Reilly: a terrifying cluster of elbows, shoulders and knees coming at you.

Allan Thompson (the second rower from up Newcastle way). Fairly lightweight backrower but I can still recall the impact wave from one of his tackles in a game at brookie.

Dennis Ward ; halfback in the Toovey mode defensively. Compact but enormously strong and gnarly customer.

Superb defenders.

Jamie Lyon on Gillett in the 2011 preliminary final. He held him up over the line from behind when he was certain to score. In the context of the game it was huge as the Broncs were coming home strong in the final 10.
