Match Stats

Bombed so many points. That we dominated possession and got the points is such a great sign. Roosters are good team in 24.

This team has grown over the off season, but there's a lot of growth yet.

Consistency. Be ware of the drop off next week. Eels looked better than the riff for plenty of Friday nite.
Just need to Roll em in Forwards Baby.
This is a good observation. Next weeks performance for mine will be season defining.

Heavily marked today , I paid attention to that
He plays 16 games, we play finals. That simple imo. The amount of attention opposition teams put on him is huge. Just where he is on the field offers up opportunities elsewhere. Plenty on here don’t see that.

Lastly that East’s team are no slouches. Beat the GF last week pretty comfortably and really were never in it today. Our middles killed them and they imo are too big in the three quarter line and it showed today. Manu looks unfit and disinterested.

Should knock the eels out next week if focused.

NRL round 2: Manly Sea Eagles 21 beat Sydney Roosters 14

Luke Brooks’ first game in front of a parochial Manly home crowd couldn’t have gone better in a thoroughly entertaining clash against the Roosters.

Luke Brooks looks like a new man running about in the Sea Eagles’ No.6, with ‘running’ being the key word.
Outside the composed and excellent Daly Cherry-Evans, 29-year-old Brooks threatened the line with most touches and set free supports with deft passing in his team’s 21-14 win over the Roosters.

Brooks, who spent 11 seasons with Wests Tigers, was close to scoring on two occasions and drew many cheers from the sold-out crowd of 17,284.

He was also flattened by Brandon Smith but got up to amass 123 running metres, a line break, a line break assist and a try assist.

His quick hands that led to Tommy Talau’s second-half try was hot skill under rushing pressure.

Teddy flattened

Following a Brooks’ bomb, James Tedesco leapt for the ball but landed flat on his back following accidental but, considering the NRL’s pre-season ‘crackdown’ on chasers both contesting the ball and looking at it, apparently illegal contact by Tom Trbojevic.

Victor Radley was also involved in Tedesco being up-ended yet the fullback’s first contact was with Trbojevic who backed into the contest and, with the ball in the air, was facing his own tryline.

Tedesco lay on his back and appeared stunned and winded for a short period but recovered quickly setup Daniel Tupou for a try before scoring one himself on the same left edge.

Young talent time

The Roosters trotted out the biggest back five in the NRL era including 200cm Dom Young.

But it was electric Sea Eagles centre Tolutau Koula who turned and burned Young and had the crowd roaring on an 80-metre burst.

Young, though, went on his own searing 80m run in the 55th minute when he parried a Trbojevic pass, saw it rebound for Tedesco who passed back to Young who burned them all, including Reuben Garrick who tore across from the opposite wing.

The 22-year-old Englishman was centimetres from scoring on two occasions and was a popular target for the kicking boot of Keary.

Haumole on fire

Haumole Olakau’atu was twice close to scoring for Manly in the second half, once held up, the other time denied by the bunker which found a minuscule knock-on early in his run.

The Origin aspirant ran for 150m with 68 post-contact metres and was dangerous close to the line.

A leg injury to Olakau’atu was tended to by Sea Eagles trainers before the 25-year-old jogged gingerly back into play.

Taniela Paseka was also impressive with 195m including 95 post-contact metres, and 27 tackles.

Entertaining start

Both teams had chances in the opening exchanges.

Young was a helpful bounce from scoring in the south-western corner before Lachlan Croker wrestled his way over for the game’s first try.

Koula was over in the 20th minute following a strong, stepping run by Jaxson Paulo who set his team free following a Luke Keary knock-on.

Daly Cherry-Evans’ 72nd minute field goal took his side out to a seven-point lead.

Manly make it two from two with statement win over Roosters

KEY POINTS

MANLY, IS IT TIME TO BELIEVE? The Sea Eagles produced some of the best 80-minute performances of 2023 before managing to miss the finals, so scepticism is warranted. But the defensive bash-up dished out at times to the likes of Lindsay Collins, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Joey Manu was just as impressive as the carve up with ball-in-hand. And on that, Haumole Olakau’atu looked, once again, like the type of back-rower you simply have to have in a sky blue jersey. Again, like Manly throughout last season, the big man’s form yo-yoed alarmingly at times. But with Daly Cherry-Evans marshalling him superbly, Taniela Paseka aiming up and Tom Trbojevic an ever-present threat in a backline brimming with pace and talent, there’s something in this Manly mob. And they might just be ready to piece it all together.
LUKE WHO’S TALKING: Luke Brooks is a new man in maroon and white. The change of scenery for the former Wests Tigers punching bag has the 29-year-old sending teammates through holes, putting hits on and playing both sides of the field in an already very promising combination with Cherry-Evans. But for one toe sliding into touch, he’d have finished the day with a well-earned try, but he’s only going to get better the longer he and Cherry-Evans play together . Manly’s $3 million investment already looks a sound one.

KEARY CONCERNS AS CHOOKS COOK THEMSELVES: All eyes on Luke Keary after he copped a head knock late in the contest from a collision with Tom Trbojevic. The Roosters half was up and about afterwards, but given he was down for some time and the Chooks are on a short turnaround to their clash with the Rabbitohs, the veteran half will naturally be in some doubt. Meanwhile, nine first-half errors made for a 60 per cent share of possession against the Chooks, especially when Manly moved into the neighbourhood on their try line leading into the break. Compounded by a 19 13 penalty count against them – with a couple of very soft offside and blocker efforts on kicks – the Roosters were perpetually stuck in the mud. Even with Manly firing, a large portion of the Tricolours’ woes were of their own making. To their credit, most other teams would have submitted to an absolute demolition having to make an extra 99 tackles.

Teddy Flattened.... that will do me. He was barely touched by Turbo. Anyone would think Turbo got away with murder from that write up. I would of thought Teddy's knee to a players head (whom was then sent for a HIA) would better suit the flattened narrative.

Also, loved that set to get DCE in firing range to kick that crucial FG, showing just how fit we are as a team.
I was very impressed with the smarts they had to kick it early too. In the past, our Manly teams only pull the trigger on field goals in the dying minutes. Taking it in the 72nd minute makes it much easier because the opposition is not expecting it. Referees tend to ignore off side in those dying stages too.

I also think psychologically, it changed how the Roosters approached the final stages of the game.

Much better attitude the 1st 2 games….but DCE was garbage & the Roosters mistakes killed them. That Brooks was far more dangerous than DCE is embarrassing. DCE full of humiliating plays, killed the attack non-stop, and his only idea in attack was a short ball to HO.

A Great win today , most non Manly people didn’t think this Manly team could beat the Roosters
Not a bad player out there, Some much improved players as well
Always good to get some points in the bank early
This team is a much better team than seasons before good balance happening

The roosters got bashed from fullback to front row, their enforcers got hammered and Manly sapped the juice out of their legs both in attack and defence. DCE knew that once he kicked the field goal the roosters wouldn't have the energy to come back even though there was 6 or 7 minutes to go.

Just an awesome performance from 1 to 17.

Still recovering from 80 min of tough couch footy. Great win. Ola was ripped off two tries I reckon. Filthy refs.
Also, the no-try in the corner when Teddy knocked the ball out, how was that a Manly knock on? Should have gone to Specsavers.
Great to see the team really working together for the win with a full house at Brookie. Yes the roosters made mistakes but Manly pressured them to do so.
2 from 2.
Eel skinning next week.
Go Manly!

To be fair DCE & Turbo we’re heavily marked , and to a much lesser extent Brooks , it’s why he had a great game.

That’s a good point
Which is why Seilbold wanted Brooks or wanted what Brooks has that unfortunately Schu couldn’t deliver
Still believe Schu will add more when he gets his chance
