Game Day: Manly v Penrith [Round 20, 2018]

A bit demoralizing but very reminiscent of that 2016 home game against the Panthers when Manly blew a big lead to lose . Panthers seemed to target the same area to make their breaks too and again defensive inexperience and bad reads were the problem . [ 4 tries in seven minutes apparently ] What also bemuses me is that if the bunker has the discretion and opportunity to overturn calls in general , why they are so selective when some wrong and crucial ref calls can make a big difference and Manly were certainly on the wrong end of a few of those yesterday which did prove very harmful . Maybe just co incidental but the change of momentum seemed to occur with .Fainu and maybe Lane having a rest . Certainly a bit hard to come to terms with when Manly does do most things right and turn up for each other to clearly be the better side and have control for the majority of a game and then it just seems to fall apart . Losing Lane is not going to help either going into next season . As have often been the case , Manly show that they can compete with the front runners but just not for the full 80 . No doubt hope can spring eternal but with outcomes like yesterday for this present Manly side , it does become a bit strained sometime ..

No mate it was a joke, get over it. Keep having shots at me over a little joke. Call me immature yet others can post dirty bad jokes and I'm still the idiot. Fainu is a jailbird, a joke. Get over it honestly. Taking personal shots at me is not on.

I actually agree with you there Holmsey. I am not sure why they have singled you out here. Just last week I was viewing a thread consisting of 4/5 pages of sexual innuendo - not a word said about that! I am not a wowser, but singling you out about your post is pretty rich coming from what some members post on here.

I really think we need to get more pace in our backline, and Walker back in the centres (especially defensively).

01. Tom Trbojevic
02. Jorge Taufua
03. Brian Kelly
04. Dylan Walker
05. Jade Anderson
06. Tom Wright
07. Daly Cherry-Evans
08. Addin Fonua-Blake
09. Manase Fainu
10. Marty Taupau
11. Joel Thompson
12. Shaun Lane
13. Jake Trbojevic

14. Trent Hodkinson
15. Taniela Paseka
16. Kelepi Tanginoa
17. Jack Gosweiski

Parker, Suli, M. Wright for Blacktown.

Can't play Anderson because he's not in the squad of 30. Won't happen until at least 2019.

Yes we are mentally weak.
It started with getting penalised out of a few games early in the season during the crackdown rubbish, and we have been gunshot and soft since then imo.

We are a young side though, so there is upside there.
Thanks Trent

Ah yes, the players did the job for 60 minutes, then the coaching staff took over.
The coaching staff builds team resilience and a winning culture
The game plan is not just for half a game or for only 60 minutes and it is planed not only for scoring but also for securing leads .
Ah yes , I mean , Oh no, not again .

I think you should be congratulating the players more so mate. A lack of confidence on that field when the tide turned coincidingly led to a boost in confidence from the Penrith team and the rest was history. I really think young squad need to be more resilient mentally. We saw the type of dedicated defense they are capable of but they crumbled when things got tough and while coaching can assist with this, in the end it comes down to the players to create that feeling out on the field.
I think that our training has a lot to do with us crumbling under pressure

We rarely did ti when Donny was in charge as he would take the players to a very dark place in the off season so that they could cope when the going gets tough on the football field

Now that they just crumple like the bearded ex titan trains them to do

A coach builds team harmony , purpose , passion , pride , resilience, character and a winning culture .
Motivation is a big factor feathered friend
How can we get motivated and up lifted by this ???
Seriously

Could be right mate. Completely different type of players in that group though who were hard as nails in nature. Stewart’s, Watmough, Lyon, Matai etc. Was that resilience moulded by Donny - possibly. Or maybe they were a special group that had that in them. I don’t see the type of blokes we had back then in this team, not talking specifically about talent, more so their mentality.

Being a happy clapper...I'm appalled at the amount of swearing on here at times. And the lewd remarks about Cam Smith and a certain media personality. I don't really get the sexual innuendo jokes...so they don't bother me so much. Sometimes, being naive can truly be a blessing!

Due to our season of horror the happy clappers are rebelling.

I was there yesterday and over the moon for 65 minutes, then, well......to say I was devastated is an understatement. I certainly think the bench may not have been used ideally but more so I pose this question.

Was the collapse yesterday mental more than anything attributed to other aspects of the game?

I think our team is so low on confidence that they find it very difficult to turn the tide when things don’t go our way and it showed in all its glory yesterday.

Last year we won plenty of close games and I felt we were reasonably mentally strong, this year has been a complete 180.

I'd say its definitely mental. For whatever reason, this team has a very bad habit of falling to pieces once things start going against them. And as usual, when that happens and the opposition score, they end up getting a roll on.

The collapse yesterday was like the first 15 minutes against the Tigpies earlier this year. Our heads dropped and we had zero idea how to stop the rot. That game was almost 4 months ago and we haven't learned a bloody thing since. Nor it would seem has our supposedly highly rated coach come up with anything to stop it.

Since when is tackling the opposition players something new. These guys have been doing it since they were 5 yo.

I have always thought this myself. These guys have been the absolute elite in any team they have played in since the age of about 5. Why should they have trouble closing out a game when leading 24-6 with 15 to go, defending, or knowing what to do in their attacking zone?

Fishing was great , WTF happened in the footy??
80 min wins a game not 70.
they have zero resolve this bunch.
IMO it simply a bad coached team.
i cant see a team out there, i see a a bunch of lost players
Good observation . We are a team of lost players that cant find a win .
Individually we look good but as a team we look lost and just cant get it together to close a game .

They don’t know how to close games. Don’t know how to win golden point. Coach and players equal blame.
I’m sick of dce’S defence in the line. He races up and then stands in no mans land while watching the ball player and has no idea what is opposite is doing. He ain’t stopping anyone.
