Terry Zarsoff
First Grader
Good call on Hales T-dub. And he must be good, because apparently Bozo rated him and he was always a keen judge. Blunty, third party deals, Trent and Gutho all spring to mind. The most promising sentence from all of the earlier media coverage is: But the club is in the midst of scrapping Blacktown as a direct feeder club and moving their NSW Cup side back under the Manly umbrella.
Let's hope that is true.
From my perspective:
I'd replace DESpicable with Steve Hales. Yes, he's untried at NRL level but he's had great success in the junior ranks and can obviously relate to the current crop of players. From what I've read, this generation of footballers need a special understanding, including the sensibilities of the Pacifica players. Manly is heavily weighted with Pacifica players. There's nothing wrong with that, but it means that the team dynamic must include a coach who knows how to get the best out of them. That rules out DESpicable, Maguire, Flanagan and others from the older generation.
I wouldn't be opposed to Slater coaching the club. He's a smart guy, and is innovative.
I'd love to see Manly link with clubs in Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and NZ. We will need a strong pathway to the Pacifica talent pools if we are to be competitive.
Obviously I'd like to see a change of ownership, but if the Penns have the nous, courage and generosity to make progressive changes then they will gain my support (as insignificant as this may be).
We would obviously be better off with a tyro 1st grade coach dealing with the off-field cathouse at Brookabeen, rather than an experienced hand who has spent the bulk of the last four decades dealing with an array of clowns on and off-field - Penn, Delmege, etc. off-field. Then the likes of Watmough in the past and the latest menagerie, on-field.
Yes, I’m only half joking.
Perhaps rather than move Des on for someone who apparently ‘understands’ the collective psyche of a bunch of western Sydney wannabes, try and put a ceiling on the whole Pacifica concept.
I would rather still have players like Gutherson, Verrills, Hynes and Garner in our system (wouldn’t you?), either true local juniors or imported early, than the bulk of these Islander lads of critically divided loyalties who have helped sabotage Manly’s season.
Agree on Slater, he would be good. However he would want the sort of resourcing that Des seems to find illusory from the St Ives set. Slater would only have to talk to Frank Ponissi (oh to have Frank as our football manager) to get a former insider’s viewpoint on what it can be like at Manly.
Meanwhile Hales may go onto be a very good 1st grade coach at some point, but even he might think next year is not the right time to take over from Hasler.
