Lodge, you Monster

He is worth a shot for 2 years IMO. He is pack leader and just what we need.
I can see why you think this and it's tempting to agree but it's fraught with danger. He's played one game. We could blink first and sign him up for two years, only for his game to capitulate next week. If he gets owned against the Sharks or in the first round of the finals, this place will very quickly forget his performance against the Dogs and be calling for the recruitment manager's head. We've got Paseka and Aloiai signed up long term. If we throw coin at Lodge and the pack is locked in and we don't get it done (which seems to be the norm, rather than the exception), we're in a pickle. One swallow doesn't make a summer.

Yep, as the financial advisers say " past performance isn't a reliable indicator of future performance.." yet that is what you base your investment on.
He's played two full seasons (25 & 22 games) in 10 seasons, one of those was on a one year deal and was rewarded with another contract. Injuries happen but he hasn't fulfilled a contract at his last three clubs...why?
So, as an investor doing due diligence most wouldn't be offering more than a one year deal with incentives l wouldn't think.

100%.

Given the amount of footy he has missed at Manly, he should be thinking about getting onboard for a one year deal and doing his best to repay the faith.

Hopefully the club can get it done with Lodge.

Seibold clearly rates him. If we want to keep him he can't be a bad fit.

But top teams keep the blokes they want. Certainly those that have only been on the field a few times in a couple of years. We shouldn't be talking huge $ here.

It’s not about the dollars … it’s about the length of the contract.

Could not agree more. Hope we hang onto him. That was an eye catching performance on Friday.

Also I have always been a big fan of Jack Hetherington. One of the genuine tough guys of the NRL. If Knights are letting him go he could be an interesting addition to our middle pack. Still very young and very mobile.

ps loved the way he "approached" that serial pest Weed Mahoney in the tunnel some time back when the Knights played the Dogs. Quietly between us girls, I reckon Mahoney crapped his pants!!

Difficult option to offer Lodge more then a one year contract based on the past couple of seasons and would think for any other potential suitors also .
Quite hard to evaluate an appropriate contract amount as well , the incentive arrangement seems the more logical approach .
Thought i noticed once where Lodge mentioned that he liked living on the Northern beaches so not sure if that may influence him to stay put even on a short term basis but if the contract arrangement suits both parties , could be a factor .
Of course , if he is can replicate last Friday 's solid effort and finishes the year strongly in whatever remaining matches , body seems in fair shape going forward , mutual agreeable contract , all good
Still would put a priority on extending Bully , Alioai [ who similar to Bully, looks like best coming on from the bench] can go well injury free . Sipley looks like on the scene for a bit longer yet . Jake reverting to prop on an ongoing basis .Paseka doing good things on a consistent basis
Quite impressive if it could all work out in Manly 's favor

It is about the dollars
Length of the contract amounts to more dollars feathered friend
If we wan to keep the Cookie Monster
We have to give him more Cookies

All depends on his (& managers) attitude.

Brown signed on with us as a train & trial to prove to himself and others that he still "had it". Has done that and earned a two year deal, no talk of how much $$.
He knew that he was in the "Last Chance Saloon" and had enough pride and humility to do something about it.
He's played 19/23 games this season and laid it on the line every time.

Does Lodge have the same mindset and honesty?
Apart from two ACL's, he doesn't really have many miles on the clock but can he realistically expect any club to sign him up for more than a season at a time as he hasn't seen out his last three contracts.

When he's been on the park he's been really good but it's a small sample size to outweigh his history.

He's also in the Last Chance Saloon.
Does he know it, does he care?

It needs to be controlled aggression. I just don't see Hetherington in control of his aggression one little bit. Knights might have paid big overs hence one of the reasons they are happy to release him. They must have paid someone big overs.

The trouble with Herthrington is he ain’t that good a footballer. He has no nuance in his game whatsoever. It’s 100 miles an hour aggression and hit ups. It’s so one dimensional, it’s hard to even call him a footballer. He is the definition of a battering ram. That’s literally all he offers.

I am not sure about the last chance saloon
There are a few clubs that are interested
He does have options
and Options amount to opportunities
The moral of the story ....
He has the opportunity to earn more money and good luck to him

If he's not in the last chance saloon, he's looking at it.
In 10 years with 5 clubs* he's only played more than 12 games in a season...twice!
So he doesn't have many miles on the clock but there's a few gremlins under the bonnet.

*NRL only plus 2 more in u20's (Panthers and Storm)

Yep, there's a few clubs interested but surely it's buyer beware for a multi year deal.

HOW BULLDOGS BOSS HELPED INSPIRE SEA EAGLES WIN

Matt Lodge was among Manly’s best when they played the Bulldogs a fortnight ago and as they prepare to meet again in the finals on Sunday, Sport Con can now reveal the part that Bulldogs chair Adam Driussi played in inspiring that devastating display.

Driussi, who has been impressive at the helm of the Bulldogs since taking over earlier this year, lit a fuse under Lodge when he publicly distanced his club from the Sea Eagles enforcer, taking to social media last month to insist his side wasn’t interested in signing him

It is understood Lodge stored that tweet away and then ran rampant against the Bulldogs as Manly embarrassed the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium in the penultimate round of the premiership.

They will now meet in the rematch at Accor Stadium on Sunday afternoon with their finals survival at stake and Lodge will again have a point to prove.

Not only is Driussi’s tweet burned into his brain, but Lodge is playing for his future as he looks to secure a new contract for next season.

Only a handful of players in the finals series are off contract at the end of the year and Lodge leads the way, his ability to showcase his talents hampered by injury.

You know it’s kind of like selling a house in a financial crisis,” Lodge said.

“Like, you know, I haven’t played, I haven’t been on the field. It’s kind of like out of sight, out of mind.

“But like I said, anyone close to me I’ve been working hard behind the scenes, and got myself in good nick. I know how to play and what I do.”

Lodge was only on a short-term deal at Manly and it appears he is unlikely to stay despite making a strong return to the NRL. His chequered past means he is off limits where some sides are concerned, but Lodge is confident he will find a home as long as he keeps playing well.

“I guess that’s kind of been the scenario for the last three, four years – bouncing around on those one year deals,” he said.

“It’s not ideal but I look back on where I come from, I’m just grateful. Still plenty more left in the tank below.

“I’m probably not the most popular figure but I guess when I do my thing, there’s no-one I am kind of worried about going up against.

“It just doesn’t always work out how you wanted it to. I thought I was going to play my whole career at the Broncos and I have been at four joints since then.

“So I’m just happy to be back playing footy and let the footy do the talking, Like my dad always tells me, play well and it always works out like.”

Lodge recently celebrated the birth of his fourth child – all boys – with partner Jess. His oldest have started playing rugby league and idolise Reece Walsh.

“They have got to the age where they bring home footy cards of Walshy and people like that,” Lodge said.

“Walshy did me a favour and gave them a facetime last week before the game (recently). The kids were stoked.”

Interesting. Just reinforces the fact you need to keep Lodge super hungry and motivated. One year contracts only

Would rather lodge for say 4-500
Than RCG. For 775 000
I wouldn't..assuming a 2 year contract...one has played 2 decent games in two years and the other, while ageing is still a pack leader and one of the best props out there.

in saying that both salaries are probably an overpay.
