We are HM premiers, but this is a new team because the premier players are now in SG Ball right?

We're now down 26-6.

Through some internet magic I'm now unable to reproduce, I was able to watch the first half. We barely touched the ball in the first 10 minutes, plenty of penalties to the Raiders, with those mountains of possession leading to easy points. Didn't help that when we did stop their momentum we coughed up possession almost immediately.

Last year's Harold Matts' team was incredible to watch. They played with the structure and poise of a good NRL team, in both attack and defence. This year's team looks pretty much like a Harold Matts team:)

Never, have so many, been so annoyed,
I'm at the game , some of last year's HM team just walked passed and they aren't to impressed haha. SG should be good cause the boys are already fired up lol
How did cayden close go ?

I did not want to say this earlier to give the guys a shot...
I think we might struggle this year in the lower juniors, particularly the Matthews side, there are only 3 starters from last year's side starting this year(couple of bench players).
It is a young side for Matthews level and is not really in the same class as last year's side which spent a couple of years together as a squad(no McEwan either)
There are still some guys who will continue through the grades but will probably be a rough season.
Ball side has more talent but is still overall young and is not as stacked as last year's side(even the Matthews guys coming through it still makes it a youngish group)
Hopefully the Ball side will fare a little better than the Matthews but people should not expect miracles from them, this side will be better next year and hopefully they will be fired up with the talent moving up from the Matthews side this year.

This seems to work

Good to see some footie again! Only saw the second half, but it was a good game. The Sea Eagles won, despite making several errors. Maybe the Raiders were unlucky with some of the refereeing decisions. Surprised there was no time out for our last kick at goal - over a minute of time was wasted. Latu was relatively quiet, but it seems he is not the main playmaker in the team. Rather, it is the more experienced halfback, Tylor Bunting (a Penrith import). Was very impressed by Feledy's speed off the mark in one dummy half run.

Luke Tucker snatches victory for Sea Eagles

A try two minutes from full-time to winger Luke Tucker has seen the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles snatch a 20-18 victory over the Canberra Raiders in round one of the SG Ball competition today.

The match in Belconnen marked the first clash between the two clubs since the Raiders knocked out the Sea Eagles in the SG Ball Cup preliminary final last season.

The Sea Eagles threatened early in attack down the left side through centre Josh Feledy and five-eighth Latu Fainu, who both have stepped up from last year’s undefeated premiership winning Harold Matthews Cup team.

Manly were held up twice over the line, the first after a barnstorming run from prop Caleb Navale, and the second following a 30 metre run by Feledy after he beat several defenders.

The Raiders opened the scoring through a try to hooker Stan Iongi after he burrowed his way through the defence after Manly conceded a penalty. Half-back Blake Metcalfe converted for a 6-0 lead after 16 minutes.

The Sea Eagles finally crossed the line after giant second-rower Samuela Fainu pounced on a grubber kick from half-back Tylor Bunting to score. Bunting converted for a 6-all scoreline after 23 minutes.

The Raiders went to a 10-6 lead when prop Taulauniuotagaloa Mariota used his strength from 10 metres out to crash through two defenders to score three minutes from half-time. Metcalfe converted for a 12-6 lead at half-time.

A great run down the left hand side saw Feledy beat four defenders to crash his way over in the corner for a 12-10 scoreline after 42 minutes. Bunting failed to convert from the sideline.

A strong run down the left edge by Canberra second-rower Thomas Carey saw five-eighth Calab Edwards race away untouched to score. Metcalfe converted for an 18-10 lead with 20 minutes remaining.

Manly hit back three minutes later when Feledy grabbed his second try off a great break by full-back Charlie Thompson. Bunting converted from the sideline to leave the Sea Eagles trailing 18-16 with 16 minutes remaining.
With the clock counting down, the Sea Eagles chanced their luck inside the final two minutes. Some nice quick hands saw Manly spread the ball right for Luke Tucker to dive over in the right corner to score for a 20-18 lead. Bunting missed the conversion.

First of many 2022 wins for the Sea Eagles 🦅

Josh Feledy was great. A tackle breaking machine that had really good acceleration.
I thought Tylor Bunting controlled and kicked well but I can definitely see Fainu taking over the side as he begins to get more comfortable with the team. Caleb Navale looked really powerful as well as Samuela Fainu who reminded me of Olakau’atu with his ball running and second phase. We where definitely lucky to get out with a win. Raiders made some errors and gave some penalties that let us come back from 18-10 in the last ten minutes.
