I like to see him actually play a game at No 9 before making him the actual starting 9

Penrith did it with Peter Wallis.. He's going great at 9 and provides a good kicking game from dummy half. If Hastings can handle the defensive requirements of hooker, this might work well. I think he needs to be in the starting team for goal kicking alone! Give him a run there in the trials and see how he gets on..

I think its the tough halves who make a good transition to hooker. Monas, Tooves, Wallace. I'm sure there are others. Hastings is tough and a real competitor. Having general play kicking options of Hastings, DCE and Green would be nice too.

I can live with Hastings starting at 9 for his goal kicking...the amount of games we've lost because of missed goals the last couple of years. We could have iced that game against the Dogs last season with that penalty goal but it never looked like going over.

Yeah even before he tee'd it up it was never going over...

Who are you and what have you done with snake? @;)

Well, if he picks Api ... then he is a cu.t who just picks his Penrith favourites!!!!

But, if he picks Hastings then he is just a cu.t who picks his childhood mates!!!

Bloody CU.T!!!
If he brings ballin back then he won't be a c.nt

Club just put out an article in the Member Zone stating Hastings has just had surgery on an ankle issue and will miss the Auckland nines, where he was to debut, but will be back for Rd 1.

Can everyone else penciled in for the top 25 go get surgery that keeps them out of the nines too???

Seriously though, when you hire a person in the real world, you check references, get a criminal history check, why wouldn't a sportsperson being hired have a medical check? So on last count officially / non officially we have Lussick / Matai / Stewart / Hastings already gone for start of the season. Surely with a new player you would start their contract when they are able to play what happens if the recuperation stalls. Have management had their collective brains cleaned out as well?

Injuries happen. To quote a great man "you can get killed walking' your doggie!"

I'd say the club would've been well aware of the issue when they signed him (assuming it's not a new injury he's picked up at training).

Sometimes it's just a matter of 'wait and watch', or, like DCE and Tommy T last season, knowing it's going to need surgery at some point but it's not critically urgent, so you try to time it right.

I broke an ankle a few years ago, and there was a bit of back and forth between doctors about whether I had to have surgery or not. Ended up having a second set of scans done after 2 1/2 weeks, and they decided it was healing fine so no surgery - it's not uncommon for them to hold off on making the call to see how you respond to other treatment first.

Incidentally, the specialist I saw (at Moore Park) treats heaps of footy players (league and union) with the same injury I had - she reckons 9 times out of 10 players will have the surgery so they can get back on the field quicker, but long term you will have a lot less trouble with it if they let it heal on its own.
