If we lose tonight.

I kinda like that we have a Finals-emulation scenario now, with a 100% chance of finals still regardless of outcome.

This week we play one of the 5-8 teams - away - that we will likely have to play in week 1 of finals, and then the following weekend we play a team 1-4 - Cronullla - who are likely to be one of the top-4 losers in week-1 anyway imo. Its a dress-rehersal before the real thing - perfect prep.

If we lose the final 2 season games, we know where we stand compared to contenders, where we need to lift before the finals - and we get another shot. If we can win these 2 games then we know we have a real shot of doing damage in finals, yet at the same time we won't feel invincible after last week's debacle of a result.

After the disappointment of that Tigers game at the time, I think in hindsight it might be the right motivational kick in the rear for us to come out breathing fire this week - honestly, if that doesn't gee the boys up and if Seibold can't have them absolutely firing in response to that then perhaps we have peaked too early or don't have the hunger for September footy yet. An if so, it's unlikely anything would have gotten us up for finals beyond week 1 anyway.

We lost our chance for a home-final which is a blow, but that would have only taken us 1 week further into finals. Winning a week-1 final away from home would be a more impressive feat, and set us up for an 'anything is possible' week-2 (again at an away venue).

Keeping a lid on expectations - but ultimately you just gotta be there at the end of the season to start with, and we have that step done now.

Manly beat Dogs tonight, can still get a home final.

Current table
5. Dogs 34 +146
6. Cows 34 +51
7. Manly 31 +121

Dogs and Cows play each other Sat next week to decide 5th place. The loser will be stuck on 34 points and be behind Manly on 35 points if they win both games vs Dogs and Sharks.

If Dogs vs Cows is a draw and all three teams end up on 35 points, on for/against that would mean Dogs in 5th, Manly in 6th and Cows in 7th place (if Manly win vs Dogs & Sharks their for/against will likely improve enough they could actually get to 5th if Dogs v Cows is a draw).

Best outcome for Manly is beat Dogs tonight, a Dogs vs Cows draw and then Manly beat Sharks. Unless Manly's wins are each by a few points, that would put Manly in 5th place vs Dragons or one of the other outsiders.

I love optimism, well done , and I guess where there’s life there’s hope.

Take it away the band Chicago:

If we lose tonight,
You’ll take away the biggest part of me,
Ooh no, Manly please don’t blow….it..

Just kidding.

The Cowboys had everything to play for against the work experience kids from the Storm (minus Papenhuyzen for most of the game) in Townsville last night, and they looked very average... IMO they are far from unbeatable.

We were a bit lucky in our R18 match, but since then Tom has been producing his best post-2021 work at fullback, whereas in that match he was a bit of a passenger at centre.

Would still rather we play at Brookvale, but if we have to win in Townsville then we just have to find a way to do it.
I think Melbourne's resting of star players may have something to do with the Cowboys inability to score an emphatic win last night.

In all seriousness, as if we are really a chance of winning the competition anyway, so it probably doesn't matter who we have to play anyway 😎

The best part come next Sunday due to dogs vs cowboys playing on Saturday we will know our equation for Sunday.

9 day turnaround from last night, sold out home game and a chance to play for a home semi next Sunday enough motivation in my eyes.

We've struck gold with the Dogs vs Cowboys fixture. If both had opportunities to win, it would take destiny out of our hands.
