Oh I'm a relatively casual boxing fan GE.

I know a lot about the little I care about, to be honest.

And certainly ppl like @mozgrame and @Chip and Chase seem to know as much, which is great.

I will certainly add my views and opinions in that regard though, for sure mate.

Number 1 right now is the Geale/Golovkin fight on the 27th July!

***Why doesn't Chip and Chase's username embolden??***

Golovkin: I want Cotto or Canelo after Geale fight

By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs) says he’s weighing on 164 pounds with exactly 9 days to go before his title defense against wily veteran Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KOs) on July 26th on HBO from Madison Square Garden in New York.

The interesting thing about Golovkin’s weight is he hasn’t even started to cut weight for the fight yet. He weighs only 4 pounds away from the 160 pound limit without even cutting weight. He’s not someone that is cutting from the 170s to squeeze down to 160 or worse, 154.

Golovkin is a small middleweight who could easily fighting in the junior middleweight division if he wanted to, but given the lack of names and talent in the division, he chooses to fight at middleweight.

During Wednesday’s media day, Golovkin said that he wants to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Miguel Cotto next after he takes care of business against the 33-year-old Geale. He’s not looking past Geale, but rather just pointing out who he wants to fight next after he gets through with Geale. Some of Canelo’s fans have said that it wouldn’t be fair for Golovkin to face Canelo because they feel that Golovkin is so much bigger than Canelo because he fights in the middleweight division.

As you can see, Golovkin is actually lighter than Canelo at 164 compared to Canelo’s 171 for his last fight and 175 for his fight before that against Alfredo Angulo. To be sure, Golovkin is a little bit taller than Canelo at 5’10” compared to the 5’9” Canelo, but that’s hardly a size advantage unless you’re just looking for excuses not to make the fight.

Golovkin said “I feel terrific, this is a big fight for me. Daniel Geale is a former world champion and a dangerous opponent. This is a big test for me. I’m very happy with the way my career has progressed. This morning I weighed 164, no problem with my weight. It’s very important to me to fight at Madison Square Garden, I’m very happy to be fighting in the big Arena this time. Right now my focus is on Daniel Geale, in the future of course I’d like to fight Miguel Cotto or Canelo Alvarez. Cotto at Madison Square Garden would be perfect. Hopefully my next fight would be in October or November. I’m ready to put on a great show on July 26 for the fans in New York.”

Cotto or Canelo will be great fights for Golovkin. There hasn’t been any talk from Top Rank promoter Bob Arum about him wanting to put Cotto in with Golovkin despite the fact that he just beat Sergio Martinez to capture his WBC title. Ring Magazine has Cotto as the Ring middleweight champion with Golovkin as the No.1 contender to the belt. I don’t know that I agree with that rating, but that’s who the Ring has as their middleweight champion.

Cotto’s win over Sergio Martinez only proved that he could beat an older fighter near 40 who came into the fight after more than a year out of the ring with a bum knee.

Cotto’s silence on the subject of fighting Golovkin can’t be seen as a good sign for the fight being made between them. Additionally, Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach says he never sees Golovkin on television, which is kind of a hint that he doesn’t see him as being a popular enough fighter to risk having Cotto fight him.

Canelo to return in November, likely against Kirkland.

By DA: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) has been in talks with his promoter Oscar De la Hoya and hinted Alvarez will return in November against an opponent still to be determined. Chepo Reynoso the manager of Canelo Alvarez also stated after the Lara fight his team is interested in James Kirkland next.

The reported venue could be in San Antonio at the Alamadome where its capacity is 40,000 seats. Due to the cheap tickets and huge fan base Alvarez and Kirkland would pull it’s not a surprise the fight would take place in Texas, because Alvarez has a large Hispanic following there and James Kirkland is from Texas himself.

“There has been talk of several rivals, but right now the one that sounds the most likely is James Kirkland. He would be a good opponent for Canelo,” Reynoso said to ESPN Deportes. “Let’s sit down with Oscar De La Hoya in the next few days to decide on who his next opponent should be.”

Before Canelo fought Angulo in March, he and Golden Boy promotions stated Alvarez would be fighting in March, July and November of 2014. The specific dates were March 8th, July 26th (changed), and November 22nd (likely to change).

November 22nd is likely to change to an earlier date because of Manny Pacquiao vs Chris Algieri taking place on November 22nd as well. Even if it weren’t to change, I’d still bet Canelo would outsell Pacquiao due to him fighting Algieri who is unknown to casual fans and the fight taking place in China. I mean c’mon, would you really rather watch Pacquiao fight a 140 pounder or Canelo and Kirkland throw hands in an exciting fight?

Oscar de la Hoya also stated Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, Kirkland and Miguel Cotto are all on Canelo’s future list of opponents. You can bet Alvarez will fight Kirkland next if he doesn’t price himself out again and Cotto in May of 2015 on Cinco de Mayo.

Should Canelo get past them both, he definitely will fight Golovkin or even Peter Quillin after. Canelo and Kirkland were scheduled to fight in 2012 on September in a fight card named “Knockout Kings”.

So let’s hope Kirkland doesn’t price himself out again and is satisfied with what he’s earning because it should be more than a million this time.

Awesome update there thanks @mozgrame

Although, Canelo and Lara actually agreed to fight at juniour-middleweight last week mate (155lbs). I just googled it and that's the drum there.

After rehydrating and eating, after the weigh-in, they'd have evened out to about 160-ish anyway.

So if Golovkin did get down a touch, and Canelo muscled up a touch, they'd be a compatible fight for sure.

I'll be surprised if it pans out that way, even if Daniel Geale doesn't upset Golovkin.

Plus, unfortunately, we have to consider Mayweather in the middle of all that.

Thanks again for that comprehensive and convenient update.

Good enough for me brother! You know how you were saying the other day that you didn't know much about Chris Algieri? Well, not many people had. lol

Here's an interesting clip I stumbled on. Good to get a young boxer's perspective of current fighters and fight decisions.

Good stuff @mozgrame

The fight game remains a tough old way to make your name, and a dollar.

For every one of em that does make it, there's at least a dozen that never quite do.

Why would you think this stuff isn't fine in this thread mate?

It's a Boxing Thread. All good!

Keep it coming.

Is Canelo on his way to being the next superstar?

By Mauricio Carranza: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KO’s) is by far the most famous and recognized Junior middleweight on the planet as of today.

I say that fully knowing that Floyd Mayweather Jr is a welterweight and defeated Canelo at 152lbs, which in my eyes does not make Floyd a Jr. Middleweight champion. And also Floyd hasn’t defended either of his WBA and WBC 154 pound titles that he won off of Canelo last September in beating him by a 12 round majority decision.

Canelo is the biggest attraction in boxing, only behind Floyd even surpassing Manny Pacquiao. The numbers for his his recent pay-per-view bout against the virtually unknown Alfredo Angulo last March proved this by approaching the 400,000 PPV buys at 350K buys.

A lot of people showed interest in that fight without it having a decent undercard, or a relatively known B-side fighter. The only drawing power this fight had was Canelo, who will next be fighting in November. Following that fight, he says he’ll be fighting on the Mexican holidays in May and September in 2015. Fighting on those holidays next years will give the 24-year-old Canelo a big boost in pay-per-view sales, because Mexican fans will be willing to pay to see a big Mexican star on their holidays. The only thing that Canelo will need to work out is how to compete with Mayweather for those dates and move him off of those dates.

Canelo has another factor that can really help his superstar status in the future which is the fact that he is obviously not scared to fight the most dangerous fighters that are out there, and I understand that he had a hard time against Erislandy Lara and Floyd, but the fact he even fought Lara gives him a lot of credit.

Before he took the Lara fight, I had a lot of questions, but now I believe it’s possible that Canelo will be the next boxing superstar. A fight with WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will be huge next year, and I wouldn’t put it past Alvarez to fight the most feared man in the middleweight division in WBA champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin after that.

Algieri wants Mayweather after Pacquiao fight.

By Chris Williams: Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) is so confident that he’s going to beat the 35-year-old Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) that he already has who in mind that he’d like to fight in his first fight after the Pacquiao fight.

Algieri wants to fight WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) in what would be a unification match. Algieri sees weakness in Pacquiao in terms of size, skills and age that he’ll be exploiting on November 22nd in their fight at the Venetian Casino & Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China.

“That’s where we’re looking [Mayweather],” Algieri said to RingTV.com.

Mayweather-Maidana 2 press conference dominated by Pacquiao questions.

By Gav Duthie: Floyd Mayweather Jr 46-0 (26) should have detected a hint of indifference at his rematch with Marcos Maidana 35-3 (31) by the worlds media as questions of Manny Pacquiao dominated his press conference. When asked about the Filipino he responded:

“Don’t talk to me about that [expletive]. That [expletive] still got [Juan Manuel] Marquez problems”.

Mayweather’s answer can be construed one of two ways.

(1) He wants a Pacquiao clean slate before he fights him

This fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao has been on the cards for about 5 years since Pacquiao defeated Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and then Miguel Cotto. To be fair the fight has been unmarketable from a financial point of view since June 2012 when Bradley beat the Filipino. Pacquaio’s demise seemed complete when Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez knocked him out in 6 rounds. This made the fight unfeasible in 2013 and a rebuilding job essential for Pacquiao’s reputation. He shut out the dangerous Brandon Rios and then avenged his controversial defeat to Bradley with a solid performance. He fights Algieri next but to wipe the slate clean does he need to avenge the Marquez defeat? It is arguable that Mayweather thinks he needs to beat the Mexican to make the fight as big as it would have been in 2010 and to maximize revenue through PPV and complete his legacy.

(2) Mayweather wants Pacquiao to lose again so he won’t need to fight him

Mayweather critics will say comments like this is just another way of avoiding Pacquiao. When Manny decided to resign with Top Rank one could argue that he doesn’t want Mayweather but lets consider Floyd’s comments from a similar viewpoint. He knows Pacquiao struggles with Marquez. Its fair to say Manny is probably slightly on the decline and he has never comprehensively beaten Marquez in four fights and 42 rounds (except maybe round 1, fight 1). If Pacquiao gets past Algieri and has to fight Marquez to get a fight with Floyd then this would probably rule out next May. If Marquez takes the fight and wins again which is entirely possible then the questions about from the media will stop.

Until one or both retire its all just speculation as to who doesn’t want to fight who. Personally I don’t think Pacquiao should be held to ransom over Marquez. Its true that Floyd beat Marquez convincingly but Pacquiao could easily say his wins over Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto were much more impressive. I’m getting tired of all this back and forth complaining and I’m beyond tired of fights between Pacquiao and Marquez. They’ve already fought four times and Pacquiao has two official wins. Lets just leave it at that and if Mayweather gets past Maidana and Pacquiao beats Algieri then they can fight in May 2015. I hope!

Algieri is dreamin' @mozgrame if he is taking Manny so lightly mate.

I agree that Mayweather will use every excuse possible to continue avoiding Manny; and unfortunately he (Manny) may be past his best a bit now.

And totally agree on Canelo!

It's scary to think what this guy might do in the next decade.

Scary and exciting in a very good way.

At almost 24 he's already clearly a superstar and as much as I'm hoping like hell Daniel Geale beats Golovkin (on Sun) a superfight somewhere down the line with Canelo is also a very juicy prospect!

Thanks again for the updates moz.

On the home front.....

Sakio Bika – “I am the toughest fighter in the division”

AUSTRALIA’S Sakio Bika will defend his WBC super middleweight title for the second time against undefeated American Anthony Dirrell, on 16th August 2014 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

The bout will be televised live in Australia through Main Event pay-per-view on Sunday August 17th from 11am as part of a triple header that features three world title fights.

On hearing the news earlier this week that a fifth Australian professional boxer in former world challenger Daniel Dawson, would be fighting on boxing’s biggest stage in the US, defending WBC titlist Sakio Bika was full of praise for the state of Australian boxing.

“It is a great time for Australian boxing. I am proud to be representing Australia at a time when we have so many talented boxers fighting for world titles at an elite level” said Bika in a media release. “I am so pleased that Daniel Dawson has this opportunity to show the world that he can compete with the best in the world.”

“He is a great fighter with great heart. He will always be a tough opponent for any fighter and is not scared to take on the best in the world,” he continued. “Austin Trout is a great boxer and will be tough opposition but I wish Daniel Dawson all the best in his fight.”

“This is a great time for the people of Australia to get behind our professional boxers as they compete against the best on the biggest stage in boxing.”

The twelve round championship fight will be a rematch of their December tussle. In that fight, Bika, 35, battled to a draw against Dirrell – who negated Bika’s swarming style with an awkward switch-hitting stance.

Bika, who was floored in the fifth round and penalized a point for a foul will go into the rematch as an underdog, despite entering the rematch as the reigning champion.

“I am training hard in St Louis and I feel in the best shape of my career,” he continued. “I am looking forward to the night and I will show the world that I am the toughest fighter in the division.”

Providing Bika is successful, it appears more than likely that he will face the winner of the official WBC super middleweight title eliminator between George Groves and Christopher Rebrasse in September. Although a fight between the winner of Groves and Rebrasse is some time away, as Bika is solely focussing on the task that lies ahead.

“I was at Wembley in May to watch Carl Froch knock out George Groves. I was impressed by the way. Froch handled his unfinished business with George Groves and now I want to do the same with Dirrell.” he explained. “I felt I won the first fight with Dirrell and I’m happy my management has been able to organise a rematch to show the world that I am the undisputed WBC champion.”

“Dirrell was very lucky to get the draw. I was the busier fighter – throwing and landing the most punches – and I dropped him with a body shot which was counted as a low blow.”

“I will be in the best shape of my professional career in August and will show boxing fans around the world that Dirrell is all bark and no bite and then I am going after Carl Froch.”

Pffft...call yourselves boxing fans. I'll try to keep it either short or visual in future. (Just like with Mrs Mozgrame lol)

Yes, you need to be in the zone to absorb those GE.

(Or loaded up on bourbon or valium...lol!)

It's the big words that bugger me

It's not that difficult to decipher that dialogue dagnabbit; but if you do find it too hard just goad Gina into reading it to you at bedtime!

You'll nod off directly (or rise to the occasion).

One of the two, old mate.

Deciphering the dialogue of pugilistic competitions whilst in bed with a loved one may lead to a diastole of not the heart, but another highly important organ, leaving the receiver completely complacent.

As for Milo, the last time I mentioned the Brownish Bomber, with a lengthy youtube clip nominating him a coach for the Sharks I think lol, it was removed by a not so modern mod. :(
