'ex' Barrett's Bulldogs

I feel sorry for him. Jeez he's had a tough trot the last few years. The fact he still has passion for the sport speaks of his resilience.
Kudos for empathy. However on the flip side of course, people who hold themselves up as knowing what to do and how to lead, whether in footy politics or anything else, are sticking their neck out and usually have done so knowing full well it doesn't always end well.

Trent's still got plenty of money, his health and good looks, he could get a media job or assistant job anytime he likes so his future is assured really.

I don't feel sorry for him myself. If Manly had sacked him maybe I would but the fact is he announced his resignation part way through a deal and part way through a season so if he's squirming a bit now I really don't mind at all @:D

That's what so many people got wrong about the 5 year plan. Most took it that Penrith were going to win the Premiership within 5 years and saw it as a failure when it didn't happen. However, the reality was (although as you said, it took more like 8 years), was that it was about re-structuring the junior pathways at the club as well as securing the clubs financial future. And on those fronts, the plan was a success because look at where the Panthers are now.
Don’t forget the NSW and federal governments gifting them $24 million in 2020 which was supposed to be used for ”grassroots sport” but instead went towards a conference centre and an underground car park for the mammoth pokies-funded Panthers Group.

I would be pretty keen to see him give 12 months notice again. From memory he reached out to gould about making that decison at manly. Be funny as , if the same happened with gould now

Yeah corruption.

Why is he listening to Gould and apparently stopped taking advice from the great immortal at our club??. Seriously though he is a joke of a coach. He may have great technical ability but has no people or player management skills. He either is best mates with the players or throws them under the bus. I don't think he has much confidence in his ability but spins really good crap in front of the cameras. He has been slapped and battered. He is on the way out. Can't see him lasting long unless he looks inwardly and starts taking responsibility for his decisions and actions. He is running out of excuses.

Yeah but by that logic I can't voice opinions......and I like my opinions hahaha

Opinions are all good, but these blokes have agendas and spit them out as gospel

Gus has been all over buzz for years and he hates it. Earlier in the year Buzz caning the Dogs for not having drones like every other club then 5 mins later Gus posts some pictures from their drones 😂

Pay packet probably helps ease his pain, although if he had any dignity he'd be embarrassed every payday!

I feel sorry for him.
Despite kind of disagreeing with this earlier, your expression of bare humanity has slightly shamed me into thinking again on it (!)

Trent's main failings at Manly appeared from my distance to mostly be about a slight weakness in his self-esteem (or something) that brought him undone and failed to inspire the side. Certainly not physically weak or intellectually about the technical side of the game. But the excuses, the buddying up with players over drinks, the inability to curb apparent bullying. From all appearances and reports he is a really nice bloke.

There is no need for him to feel humiliated but there is some risk that Gus's antics in particular may leave him feeling publicly humiliated. No matter how financially secure or good-looking that puts anyone's mental health at risk. Maybe even more so in a field like league where men are never supposed to reveal any weakness?

Anyway I want the Dogs to lose every match of course! but I don't actually wish any harm on Trent, after all he attempted to help Manly, it's not an easy job!

Gus has his finger poised to press the eject button. There will be more pain this weekend playing the Roosters who are coming off a shock loss.

I do feel a bit sorry for Barrett - as alluded to by @SeaEagleRock8 I think there is some inner insecurity in him & he tries to hide it with stubborn pride.

I suspect this defence mechanism is what caused him & Bozo to fall out.

As for him resigning halfway through the season when with us, I think that was naivety on Barrett's part by going to Gus for advice & following it. He didn't come out of that looking particularly good & he probably regrets it now.

IMO he should have spent another couple of years as assistant coach somewhere after leaving us to rebuild his confidence & gain more experience before going for another first grade coaching position.

As it is, he's now in a no-win situation - first he was seen as Dean Pay's usurper, now he's seen as being babysat by Gus, so regardless of how the dogs go this year, he won't be taken seriously as a coach.

We also know Gus can be ruthless & won't hesitate at cutting Barrett loose if the doggies show no sign of improvement this year.

on a personal level i have empathy for the dude
manly has never been an easy club, especially since private ownership, which probably holds us back more than we care to admit

more empathy for dean pay though.

less empathy for the dogs , and would love to see barrett stay so i can continue to empathise them into the spoon.

Wow! over a 100 pages on this thread. Gee I think we are collectively thinking more about this than what Trent probably is. At the end of the day he is certainly not missing out considering his likely monthly pay cheque. Even if he gets punted he will likely receive a significant payout. He is likely better off than most of us despite what ever happens. There will always be a assistant role or a job in the media ( blue steel) no matter what happens. I am enjoying this only because of my dislike for the bulldogs. Trent is laughing all the way to the bank a true coaching imposter.

I don’t wish Baz success, but I don’t wish him misery either.

I kind of learned my lesson from Seibold - I used to really, really enjoy Seibold’s press conferences and enjoyed the Broncos spoon that year. But seeing a man destroyed like Seibold was, that was not enjoyable.

COACHING DOGHOUSE

Worst winning percentages for coaches in charge of 100 games or more.

Ron Hilditch (Illawarra 1989-90 and Parramatta 1994-96) 109 games, 32 wins, 29.4%.
Trent Barrett (Manly 2016-18 and Canterbury 2021) 104 games, 33 wins, 31.7%.
Tom Raudonikis (Wests Magpies 1995-99) 115 games, 39 wins, 33.9%.
Steve Kearney (Parramatta 2011-12 and Warriors 2017-20) 121 games, 43 wins, 35.5%.
Bob Boland (Penrith 1968-72) 110 games, 39 wins, 35.5%.

I quite enjoyed Seibold's NRL website previews and analysis of games, seems a good communicator in that forum. He should have stayed at Souths, or in his gig as assistant at Manly. The Broncos after the Wayne debacle was always going to be a poison chalice.

Yeah but he was there for their 8 year 5-year plan & was involved in implementing the structure that got them the GF IMO.
But the side and structure he implemented was dissolved by Cleary and the CEO after Gould left. Only then did the 17 year plan start to bear fruit.....
The bloke has done SFA for 20 years.

What a position for Trent

  • they win and it is Gus
  • get thumped and it is him

I would feel sorry for him if he had not tried to wedge us into an early payout so he could join Gus at Penrith (all speculation of course)
Thought it was all about Barrett wanting an A-Mart office furniture upgrade in his last year with us.
