Dragons v Sea Eagles: Sims back on deck; Manly on a roll

With seven rounds remaining, the Dragons and Sea Eagles are part of the dogfight for places in the bottom part of the top eight.

The Dragons have slipped from eighth to 11th in the past two weeks but with back-to-back games at their spiritual home ground they get an ideal opportunity to put themselves back in the mix.
Manly have won four of their past five games and will look to shore up their place in the eight by taking care of the Dragons (11th) and Roosters (9th) in the next two weeks.

Having conceded 86 points in their past two games the Dragons need to put some steel back in their defence if they hope to subdue a potent Sea Eagles side averaging 35 points per game in the past five matches.

The Rundown

Team news

Dragons: Tariq Sims returns from suspension in a boost for the Dragons, with Billy Burns the man likely to make way. Moses Suli suffered an ankle injury against the Roosters and will be monitored.

Sea Eagles: A clean bill of health for Manly after the win over Newcastle. Josh Aloiai's return from concussion saw Taniela Paseka drop back to NSW Cup. Paseka is ready to go if required as is Ben Trbojevic, who has been 18th Man for the past two matches.

Key match-up

Ben Hunt v Daly Cherry-Evans: Two of Queensland's finest square off in the pivotal playmaking battle which holds the key to this one. Both men stood tall in Origin III and then rolled that into superb performances in Round 18 but Hunt's efforts were in vain as the Dragons were blown off the park by the Roosters. Cherry-Evans was supreme with three try assists, two line breaks and five tackle breaks in a big win over the Knights and he arrives at Kogarah full of confidence as he looks to lead Des Hasler's men into the finals for the third time in four years.

Stat Attack

When it comes to giving away penalties, the Dragons and Sea Eagles have shown plenty of discipline in 2022. Only Parramatta (85) have conceded less penalties than the Dragons (91). Manly have given up 96 penalties in 17 games, well down the list from the worst offenders Storm (123), Sharks (112), Raiders (110) and Roosters (108).

Jake is a huge out .... big step up for Toff to get to match Jake in defence ... they will target our middle ... Koula to leave Suli grasping if thin air if DCE gives him good ball

Backline settled and going well. We won’t know the pack for this game until an hour before kickoff.
Our use of Schuster has probably replaced angst over Harper or Croker as the no. 1 concern.

But they didn’t know Jake has Covid.
You are Right Rosko

They also do know the surprising changes to the current line ups on game day

One thing we know is that the team that turns up will get up

Consistency is the key and the most consistent winning teams from now on will secure top 8 positions

Jake is out means all our other forwards have to pull their finger out

and do more tackling if they want to win the game

Moses the Monster is also out

Suli's out.

Ref is Adam Gee.

Had him 3 times this year (L/W/L).
The Ref perspective ....

If we can cut out on our own errors we can make up for any of the refs errors

Errors are part of the game

Players Characters play the part of winning the game

No Excuses

You are either good enough to win or not

Looks like Davey won’t play either.

Trbojevic wasn’t named in the Manly side for the Jubilee Stadium clash after contracting the virus on Sunday evening. Davey has been named in the Sea Eagles’ back row but well-placed sources have confirmed he too has Covid and won’t play.

Obviously I'm old school regarding the lock position as one that links the forwards with the backs, provides covering defence, has speed, a step and handling skills. My mind goes to locks such as Raper, Menzies, Clyde . . .
Now we are talking about putting draft horses there such as Sippers or Keppie when we have a thoroughbred such as The Shoe waiting in the stalls.
I am so out of touch.

Schu to backrow, Burbo to the bench.

Nothing like a few players out to test team character

The underrated Davey was starting to play in the best form of his career Running and hitting hard

One thing that is not underrated is the Great QLD Maroon Passion and grit to win games under adversity

We must emulate the Maroon Passion and Pride in our Manly Jersey
