Des out coached by Clearly tonight

Was funny in the pre match to hear Tom say they had worked on there defence over the off season…..

Gave up 28pts to 6 in round one and once again we will be well behind on for against just like we have been in the last 5 years.

Yep, Penrith had a couple disallowed as well. Could’ve easily been 40.

Even fans of other teams thought that the Ref allowed Penrith to hold down in the ruck and slow us down (from Reddit):

Brisbane Broncos
That period in the 2nd half where Penrith just crushed Manly coming out of their own end were all in penalty territory.
It’s only one game, but the rule change might be a bit of a furphy if the refs are too reluctant to blow a penalty because it’s perceived as a much bigger impact than a six again.

Kind of went both ways though …
I think you’re right with the refs being reluctant to blow penalties inside halfway ..
Might not have been as noticeable on TV but there was one set in particular in the first half where Manly were deadset 2 to 3 metres offside , you may have heard the crowd howling on the coverage …
First 3-4 tackles were inside halfway all offside , Penrith eventually got a six again call but only after they crossed halfway and this was probably the least bad of all the play the balls for offside , it was like the Ref was waiting for play to cross halfway to blow it ..

7-4 to Manly but you have to take into account that 2 of them were obstructions that the ref didn't make a call on.
So in live play the calls were 5-4 penalty count to Manly and set restart count of 7-2 to Penrith.

Well if you're taking that into account it would actually be 6-4 because the ref called the second one an obstruction off the bat, but your overall point stands

Definately think that was what it was. They need to stomp on it hard it go back to last season. Because Penrith slowed that game down so much with very little consequence. Either go back to six again at every little instance, or just stomp on them with penalties for every team that is taking their time.

That’s an interesting observation and may have the opposite result, manly screaming for calls that weren’t forth coming. This was evident in the trials, with slow ruck play, will be interesting to see how this plays out over the next month.

Well 4chan commentary is completely the opposite, they’re all saying that the refs were great and Manly just aren’t very good. They were also talking about some cooker march on Saturday, sounds weird.

Awesome performance from Penrith tonight and Des was completely out coached by Ivan Clearly.

Penrith's speed off the line in defence and their ability to get 3 in so many tackles to slow down the ruck is special.

It made Manly look like they aren't fit and have no defensive system.

Kicking to Saab on the end of almost every set of 6 was brilliant tactics. While Saab is fast, his ability to break the line bringing the ball out from his line is poor. It worked perfectly.

If Des doesn't get going with some real coaching and tactics, we will be very lucky to make the top4.
Be lucky if make the 8, teams are working us out to a T. We are always waiting on Turbo!

Sadly all the issues from the finals still exist. I think the psychological damage from this loss is even greater than you think. Despite 5 months preparing for one game, and all the publicity, we know we cant compete with the top sides. As for the centre issue don't get me started. But seems to fall on deaf ears.

As I said in a previous post.. Des needs to consider signing a legitimate specialist hooker
At the moment we have a rising star in GCKT ready for a crack , and James Segyaro is playing for Blacktown

Credit to Ivan, but he just copied what Ricky Stuart had his Raiders doing in the trial game win. It was all there for the whole world to see and for Des to prepare the team for.

Hasler needs to adapt (this is one of his biggest faults imo) as he's set in his ways. The games changed. For example, in the early 2000's you could cover a hooker with a halfback, but not today. 2022, you need a specialist.

Des plays silly buggars with positions. He has a half playing hooker, a hooker playing backrow, a 5/8 playing backrow, a centre playing lock. Just takes away from our players being able to play where they are best suited and know

The Chooks, Bunnies, Storm, and I hate saying this, but Parra will be right up there with them.
This didn't age well. Chooks beaten by Newie, souths by the Broncs and Storm are out of cattle already. Para needed devine ref intervention to beat the tits.
If any of those sides had have played the riff the other night they would have been slaughtered.

Move Schuster to 5/8 , bring in either Segeyaro or Gordon Cham Kum Tong. We cannot persist with too slow Foran and Croker. Agree with the rest.
The shoe is injured till round 6 so that can't happen. Segeyaro hasn't played NRL in years and GCKT is a kid who would be eaten alive under the defensive load of NRL.
Any other tips for Des?
