Comin' to America...!

Cleal iss too lazy to scout a town over, let alone a neighbouring hemisphere. Him/des and singe can ride off into the sunset, thanks for your (mostly) outstanding service.

We need to shore up the foundations before building a gaudy extension.

Everything about this club at the moment reeks of ineptitude and ignorance as to what is truely going on/what needs to happen and where our focus should be currently
(a us trip will **** up our first few weeks)

Heartbreaking.
I'd love to see the list of players Cleal has signed in the last ten years. If there is any

Personally I am a fan of taking a game to America ... but as others have said ... with the turmoil of a late starting coach, unfilled support staff, players at the world cup, and South's the preferred opponent due to Rusty Crowes promotional imput pulling out .... It needs to be delayed a year ...

The goal of course is to get an audience base for the NRL games to be shown on Fox in the states .. increases the broadcast rights deal, also gradually paths the way for an American/Canadian domestic comp ... throw in additional gambling in the US market and the returns are enticing ... for very little outlay ..

The market is huge and NRL only needs to carve out a small niche to be well rewarded ... and they believe they have a product good enough to do it ...

... And of course, I reckon old mate Penn dreams of owning the New York Sea Eagles ...
This will disrupt the beginning of our season no end, the game will have to be played one week earlier in order to arrive back home for round two, it will eat into valuable trials time.
The game received valuable exposure time during Covid two years ago because it was the only sport being played. The Americans who know nothing about the game, and that's the vast majority, were intrigued that such a game could be played without protection and the physicallity of it, but I think that's were the interest ended.
The Yanks are a very insular lot, and are only interested in things that apply to their daily life, most of them confuse Australia with Austria, they have two major winter sports and two major summer sports and that is it, even soccer doesn't have the prominence that it does elsewhere.
Whilst we believe that our game is the best, it will only ever have importance on the East Coast of Australia, NZ, Pacific Nations , England and France, just like how the Victorians think that their game is the best, apart from Victoria, SA,WA, Tassie, and a bit in NSW and QLD, the rest of the world can't come to grips with the game, and I don't blame them, however Rugby League may be in the same situation, way too many other established sports in order to try and gain a foothold.

If there's ever a preseason where we don't need the distraction of an overseas game, it's this one!

It makes excellent sense for the NRL ... They don't have to get a foothold .. they are not trying to compete or become a big sport .. it costs the NRL zero dollars extra to have the 16 games broadcast on USA fox .. there are 40 million people in California alone ... they only need a very small % of people to watch for them to get a reasonable value add pay day .. plus as an additional sport for the US market to bet on ... they get a % kick back from that gambling... so for very little outlay .. the rewards, for minimal cost is just about all cream ... any fans gained would be possible merchandise and overseas member package targets ... all done at little cost over the web site ...

From Manly's point of view, your arguments are valid .. but as I said, I believe we have an owner who wants to own the New York franchise in a domestic comp over there ... how much success that has is questionable ... but that would be his motivation ...

Surely all of this work to capture a market could be done without dragging the cattle over there?
I'd be very surprised if they could fill a stadium and, even if they did, how much word of mouth would it generate? Would it get any sort of prime time on a network or a sports channel.
As for the Crowe/Jackman effect ... so what if they follow a sports team in their home country? How many English stars are there? Sure they have a soccer comp over there but only soccer nuts know about it.
The ONLY thing I can think of is that Americans can only gamble on American sports?
I just can't see the point of lugging everyone over there.
Help me understand!!

Edit: OK. Thinking. So maybe Americans will only gamble if they can watch a game live and our timezones are all wrong. But then surely we could play a game here at 10am like the poor bloody swimmers have to do with their finals when it doesn't suit the yanks.
Or maybe we don't want to insult them by staying home?

Nup. Don't get it.

I don't have the answers for you Budgie ... but my gut, and years in business, incline me to believe that for very little outlay, .. (the NRL recorded income of nearly $600 million last year) .. the potential rewards vastly out weight any minimal cost, and with no risk ...

As for the benefit to any specific club ... questionable, other than to ultimately benefit from any expansion of the game ..

As far as a one off game ... I think there are enough expat Aussies, Poms Kiwis etc in cosmopolitan cities like LA or New York to engender some interest and get a crowd ... also remembering that it is the spectacle that is important, not the income, so they could hand out 10,000 free tickets ... if it costs the NRL a million to put on, they may well see that as money well gambled .

But, as I said I have no internal knowledge ... just my own thoughts ..
