Sea Eagles committed to playing historic match in United States in 2023
The NRL’s American dream isn’t over yet as the Sea Eagles reaffirm their commitment to playing a historic match in the US to kick-off next season.
The NRL’s American dream is still on the table with the Sea Eagles remaining committed to the historic match to kick-off next season.
The NRL is pushing on with plans to open the 2023 season in the US, despite South Sydney’s revelations that they will not be part of the game.
The original concept was to pit the Russell Crowe-owned Rabbitohs against Manly but the Rabbitohs have pulled out. It is understood the NRL remain keen to push the round zero match and have already talked with other clubs.
Manly boss Tony Mestrov said his club was committed to the match.
“We are slightly disappointed because we are 100 per cent behind it and we would do anything to make it happen,” Mestrov said. “Obviously (owner) Scott Penn wants to be the driver behind this game because he lives in America and sees the opportunities.
“He can assist in bringing partners to the table. We understand why (Souths have pulled out) but the fact is there is an opportunity for us also with our partners and sponsors to assist the club and make them happy. But look, we need to play someone.
“I know (ARLC chairman) Peter V’landys is very keen on it and so are we. We want to support his vision to open up a new market.”
The Rabbitohs opted out because of the lack of “concrete information” attached to the game, which is scheduled to take place the week before the rest of the competition play round one.
The NRL wanted to use Crowe’s profile to help endorse the game. Manly fan Hugh Jackman is expected to be a key part of any promotion.
The end-of-season World Cup complicates things given players will have an extended break, but Mestrov said his club was comfortable with the arrangements.
“We understand there are new markets and growing the game,” Mestrov said.
****ing clowns all about Scotty
Mestrov seems like a puppet
Not to mention the World Cup disruption. Unbelievably, a good chunk of our players will probably be playing for Pacifica teams. So more time away from the Club (assuming the current conjecture does not pan out) so less time to get these blokes back fit and working for each other. Even tho I'll probably be there at the time and would definitely go to the game, it's seems like our priorities are pretty screwed up given the mess we are currently in.Don't we have more important ** to focus on at home than this absolute rubbish ? Let two good teams go. To have a team flogged by 50 in front of new fans isn't selling Jack **.
Is Mestrov dumb, blind, or literally not watching our product right now ?
Forget America FFS. Focus on culture. Focus on cap management. Focus on recruitment. Focus on coaching and staffing.
Nothing ****ing else matters right now ! This is up there with the pride jerseys !
I think your on the right track there feathered friendMaybe that's where the invisible Cleal has been .
He has been searching for possible talent state by state.
That's great!“We understand there are new markets and growing the game,” Mestrov said.
Good point there feathered friend !We need to shore up the foundations before building a gaudy extension.
Everything about this club at the moment reeks of ineptitude and ignorance as to what is truely going on/what needs to happen and where our focus should be currently
We understand that this is our Priority Tony and its starts in our own back yard“We understand there are new markets and growing the game,” Mestrov said.
Classic LOL !!!That's great!
Although a bit of disruption to preparations for a full NRL season.
It will eat into our preseason time for getting fit.
And into time for healing player unity issues.
And into time to practice the new methods and plays of a new head coach.
Not to mention we'll already have a shorted pre-season due to world cup commitments.
And a reduced time available to learn the new coaches drills because he can't start on time.
And I guess players will return from the US pretty drained after very long flights.
And as with the old World Club tours, the impact on players will be towards season end.
And of course we'll lose the US game anyway because we always lose Round 1.
So on balance ... it's great! Our season will be screwed, but new markets!
