Pay offer too good for players to refuse, say clubs after agreeing to $9.4m cap

Chris Barrett

The NRL will take a "best and final" offer to players on Friday that gives them a 29.5 per cent cut of the game's revenue and will see the total player payment pool more than double over the next five years.

The competition's 16 clubs voted unanimously on Thursday in support of the NRL's proposed new collective bargaining agreement, which includes a $9.4 million salary cap for next season.

Club bosses urged the Rugby League Players' Association to accept the offer after leaving League Central, hailing the deal as a huge win for players.

The proposed new pay agreement is two-tiered in its distribution of revenue as was the deal struck by the AFL and its players' association in June.

Players stand to receive a 52 per cent pay rise across the five years of the CBA, with the NRL ready to hand them 29.5 per cent of guaranteed projected revenue and a 25 per cent share of the game's upside should revenue exceed forecasts.

The deal would leave the average NRL player earning $330,000.

Like the AFL's agreement with its players, there are exclusions on certain non-broadcast revenue streams including digital costs, contra, government grants and leagues club funding.

Reports today that Dogs are 1.1m over next year's Cap.😎

It's all those backended deals that Dez is so fond of.😡

Dez will walk IMO, as the math is too hard now 😵

Sounds familiar.

Those backended deals have really backfired. Eastwood $800k might be worth $400k, Graham $1M might be lucky to be worth $600k, plus 2 x Morris both on $700k each they are not worth that combined.

The signing of Jackson at $600k by Hasler proves he has lost the plot. Who seriously has him worth less that Eastwood.

The other clanger is Hopoate re-signing at $500k a season for 3 years. He is not a first grader.

Hasler has systematically screwed the Dogs big time, it will take them 5 seasons to fully recover.

Edit: The other genius move was signing Mbye for 4 years at $750k a year, another player barely of first grade standard.

Know here's hoping clubs dig their heels in and refuse to take on the past it players they are attempting to offload. Which forces the Dogs to put up a couple of players they don't want to. We are all well aware of who we'd like them to offer.

If Dogs budgeted for 10 Million and it's 9.4, they haven't got to shed many have they??

The whole " this one , that one and this one as well" on the market may well be almost total BS.

Probably 1 player at worst.

Don't forget Des' love for back-ended contracts!

This is why they are in strife and will need to off-load a few more than just 1 player!

My heart bleeds...hahahaha

If we can snare Graham or klemmer wouldn't the dogs have to pay half their salary as they have a year to run on their contracts.

That really is quite a astounding series of deals.

Two things come to mind;
1) did Dezzie Dogler buy some player love to keep himself employed over the last 2-3 years?
2) did he also plan on being long gone before the SHTF?

History has some comments to make on this.....

De$ isn't the same coach as he was 2007-2011, the games changed, he hasn't!

Bit hard to understand what the actual reasoning or logic has been in regard to the Bulldogs recent recruiting planning . Whether they were grossly misguided or just neglectful with the anticipated final or likely cap arrangement or whether they have been under some general misapprehension or overestimated their ability to move certain players on if then required . The fact that Woods and Foran"s contracts are still only provisionally approved and registered by the N R L just makes their current cap situation even more bemusing to say the least . Also i was under the impression that even though all or most of the present attention is directed at the Bulldogs cap situation , that there are also other clubs affected and who have organized next seasons cap level on the now redundant higher cap figure. Anyway i guess that the best course for Manly right now is just to concentrate on doing as well as they can for the rest of this season and to also astutely keep an interest in any possible and suitable recruiting opportunities that may still occur.

From everything I have heard the raiders are tight on cap space, and you have to wonder if the 'riff are in the red, even thought they offloaded players.

Who knows really. They fact we were advocating for 9.2 tells me we are ok with cap space (although knowing Penn, he was looking to save himself 200K 😉 ).

One thing's for certain, the Donkeys, Souffs and Chooks are sweet. :moneybag::moneybag::moneybag:

Des hasn't changed ???
When was the last time you have seen him feathered friend ????

No money to be saved by Penn, because the NRL pays the cap not Penn.

Therefore if we were advocating the lower cap it must have been for some other reason (eg to screw some other clubs so we could profit from their predicaments).

He also has the disadvantage now of not having near the same quality in his players that he did at Manly.

Snake, Killer, Robbo, Beaver, Ox, Skivy, Kitey, Matty B, Kingdog, Perry, Choc, Gifty, Cherry, Foran.....and of them in their prime would walk into this current Dogs team and instantly be their superstar compared to the players they have now.

Des had the Advantage of the unlimited funds from the Canterbury leagues club to single handedly select the players he wanted and released players like Marty Taupau . No excuses for Des .

Thats it - 6yrs to assemble the team he wanted and he's taken them on a downward spiral.
He'll be gone by the start of '18 I think.

I heard somewhere that the dogs board elections are end of the year, and a new board could see him out.
