I'm one who is unimpressed with the new cap.
The game needs a fresh approach to compete effectively with AFL. Instead the Board has capitulated to the demands of 16 clubs in a top heavy league system. They had in my mind a chance to expand the game at its top and its roots. Instead it succumbed to the demands of clubs on a cap induced rising spiral of trying to out-compete each other while the game falters at its foundations.
The country and junior comps are being out-competed even in NSW by the AFL, whose tentacles are driving further and further into the rich player resources of this state, while League concentrates its efforts in appeasing these few short term thinking clubs.
With the extra payout from the media, we could have included Perth and a second Brisbane side by now. This would have in the longer term increased crowd support at grounds and TV, a greater interest in those areas for young League players to develop, and a greater argument in the next media payment negotiations for a significant revenue increase owing to greater audience interest.
Every couple of hundred thousand dollars paid to the clubs is a couple of hundred thousand dollars denied the growth areas of the game. This administration is without foresight or imagination, reactive to the core
