You replace them with blokes that will speak their values and disassociate their own personal beliefs from those of their employer Manly... you make sure that any future contract is explicit that you refuse to play for any reason barring injury (not to be confused with are permitted by the club not to play - family death, wotnot) then your contract and any owed monies are forfeit...
Go find some club that is willing to sell its soul for results...

I note that Paseka, Taupau, Harper etc are still playing so not ALL Polynesians are weak pricks that won't suit up cause of a coloured stripe...
Those three players are NZ ers, presumably not imbued with the Polynesian (Tongan/Samoa) ISLANDER ethos.

Poor ole Des looks shattered at this press conference, basically apologising to the entire world for the Manly club fuk up and jersey decision that he was not involved in.

Where is the so called CFO? He should be here.

Truly a sad day.
Where are the owners??? all we have heard is a random report that Penn will not back down. He should have fronted the media, even if it had to be via Video

He should. But would he have been as impressive as our coach and captain?

I hope some of his detractors start laying off the anti-Des rhetoric. The events of the last 48 hours are a peek through the front door at what Des probably has to deal with on a regular basis - routine incompetence in the front office.

Not at all mate. I just dont think our coach should have to do it. As for Dce he still doesn't get what the issue is, from what I have read.

I wouldn't be surprised if we lose every game for the rest of the season because of this. Commence Rant.

Take the players and their views out of this for a moment - and whether there is support/disdain for their stance - this was a situation and decision forced on them publicly to achieve an outcome (Pride support and awareness). I acknowledge there might be a percevied noblilty in the intention here, but I also question if that was even the motivation here. If the club were truly committed to this notion, they wouldn't have ham-fisted a hasty go-to-market without more consultation and consideration.

I imagine some upstart in marketing, or some Management-type think tanking with the board thought it would be a good look for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles to lead in this area - for Financial purposes primarily. More bums on seats, Image management, being a paragon of virtue in an age where ideas of tolerance are slowly wresting away the narrative control from those still resistant - this is all $$$ to these people, who think they can win some cheap support for being 'progressive'. Cynical? You bet - the Manly back-room have shat the bed too many times for me to think their intentions were noble.

The short-sightedness on this was just unforgivable. Now Social Media is blowing up with memes on Manly players not playing in rain/showers (rainbows might appear!!), comparing their stance with Gambling/alcohol sponsorhip, outraged that Des is 'concerned for the welfare of his players' like he should ostracize them publicly, questioning their take on sex-before-marriage, whether they play pokies, swear, drink, watch porn, play on Sundays, eat bacon.....you name it.

These players arguably deserve flak (or praise depending on where you sit on the issue) - but they don't deserve this trial by media. These are footy players, and a lot of them are way too young to have been thrown out onto this minefield of public perception, and be judged on the altar of public opinion in this way.

And top it all off, the club send out Des and DCE to deliver a highly scripted and hastily-contructed backdown - which was absolutely needed to appease the demands of Diversity and Inclusion today (trust me - this is a HUGE area in buisness operations today). Where the FK are the club management though, along with a culpable member of the team publicly and openly resigning over this to take the heat away from the club/coach/players? No lets slide out Des and Daly and hope for the best (luckily both Des/DCE are fkn top-notch operators and did the best they could with this shiit-sandwich). Management should be copping the flak publicly - and one of the journos called it out when they asked Des 'Why are you here and not the decision-maker on this?'. Where indeed. They are Cowards. I wouldn't play for them if I was a player.

So is the stance of the players correct? Quite frankly it doesn't matter 1 bit - it should have remained out of the public sphere. The fact management didn't playbook this announcement and extrapolate the scenario we see right now show that the club is not fit to manage the optics of both club and players. Maybe our Players too are not fit to playbook/workshop their own response to something they find confronting to their beliefs or sensibilities - but the Players can be forgiven for their lack of forsight on how this would play out: they are footy players. Club Management however, they are culpable of a massive failure here tantamount to incompetence. Absolute Muppets.

Now the club and players have their backs to the wall, with a braying media hungry for Footy fk-ups to feed their scant outrage pipeline. This isn't going away in a hurry.

Well done thought-bubble person who decided a knee-jerk Pride recognition token gesture would be all we needed to address this complex issue. Well. $#@. Done.

And also with the Fainu case going on. Tough Gig coaching

Well, there's always another opinion, and I have certainly been exposed to it through Chelsea and ManU. These are our rules and if you don't like it FO.

The conversation really shouldn't focus solely on the club not consulting the players beforehand as that's not the real issue here.

The real issue is that these 7 players are placing their religious beliefs before everyone's right to be included & what's best for the team.

It displays ignorance & selfishness on their part, unfortunately.

Ok, how about we discuss some conspiracy theories. Don't shoot me down, I'm doing this for a bit of fun, so let's have some fun.
1. Just for a moment lets think who does this help? Club sells 5000 jumpers at $160 each (with more being produced), club will have a full stadium on Thursday in support or protest.
2. NRL have a distraction from Tigers debacle
3. Manly want to play in NY against Souths in a pre season next year, is NRL now paying the bill? who gets the merchandising money?
4. Does any Manly supporter thinks we were going to win on Thursday? I don't think many after last week.

I think I agree with every part of this post, well said !

Absolutely spot on. Perfectly enunciated.
I ran a PR and marketing consultancy for more than 35 years and the Pride idea almost certainly started in a marketing think-tank. The ramifications were not considered, and to show how amateurish the decision-makers were they rolled it out in a round that was dedicated to Women.
This will go down in marketing text books as an example of what not to do

This 100 percent.

No, that is the real issue.
What would have been best for the team is that the best 17 players wore traditional Manly jerseys or ones tricked up to honour the Women In League Round... Just like the other 15 clubs in the NRL are doing.
What's best for supporters is that we attended the match to cheer on our best 17 players.
The club destroyed this round, and the enjoyment of thousands of Manly supporters.

I disagree - I think the fact that players are refusing to play due to outdated religious beliefs & are happy to be seen as homophobic while doing so is the much bigger issue.

5. Ethan Bullemore was sick of playing for Blacktown and devised a scheme that would see him back in first grade.
