Bulldogs - Salary Cap Cheaters

SMH are reporting that at a member forum tonight the club highlighted the fact that they won’t be able to be a major player in the market until 2021:

‘Canterbury’s new management concede the club can’t be active in the transfer market until 2021 after inheriting a salary cap mess that includes having up to 10 players entering the big money years of back-ended contracts next year.’

I still think des coaching the 2008 team to win 40-0 against a team well over the cap was one of the great coaching performances of all time
I think one of the most underrated influences on that era that doesn’t get spoken about nearly enough is that beaver took enormous unders purely because he never wanted to play against manly. He knew (and I know this first hand) that he made serious cash during the super league war that set him up for life.

As a positive role model while also being an awesome player he was like our own version of a third party agreement with what he took compared to his open market worth.

The poker nights they used to talk about with him....

They should try to offload FOURan and Woods for a start. But which club would pay much for them - possibly only the Gold Coke or Newcastle who seem to have a bottomless cap.
Then the two Morris boys will go, even though they are playing well and probably have another two seasons left at the top level.
I wonder what the TPA's are like at the Dogs?

The fans may not, but most clubs would actually love to have Woods. Maybe not his price tag, but he is highly valued in the NRL.

The twins are probably going to end up in the SL.

Foran is not the player he was at Manly. Some clubs would definitely want him but I doubt he's as highly sought after as he was when in the maroon and white.

1. Des is a control freak. A very successful control freak.
2. When some nuffty named Dave perry started to tell him what to do, he didn't like it. Hard to blame a 300 game manly legend who coached us to two premierships for getting a bit upset about some nobody coming in and telling him what's what.
4. Des achieved success by back ending contracts. That allowed us to keep a champion team together for a decade.
5. When you are a resource poor club like manly, there is very little you can do to achieve prolonged success against teams like the Broncos, storm and roosters. You don't have access to TPAs that enable you to keep and attract star players, and you certainly don't have news limited backing. Back ending contracts is one of the few ways clubs like manly can compete on a close to even playing field.
6. If you were CEO of a company that you built up to achieve multi millionaire dollar profits year after year, who was then told by the board that the new office boy was now going to tell you what to do, I imagine you'd be a tad upset too.
7. The coaching staff that des poached were put together by him during his time at manly. They were his trusted lieutenants. Hard to blame him for taking them with him elsewhere. Manly didn't own them. If they loved manly so much, they could have stayed. Fairly sure des wasn't holding a gun to their heads.
I understand people still feeling p1ssed with Hasler, and when he left I hated him for a time. But over the years my disdain has definitely passed... he has been a major part of four of our premierships, and when he took over our club we were a basket case. He gave us ten of the best years the club has ever had, and for that reason I still love him as a Manly legend. Sh1t happens, footy is a business, and the bald headed little viper who is currently running the game, swooped in and tried to buy with cash the decade of dominance we had experienced. Let’s not forget we should have had another two premierships with the ship that Dessie built (2007 lost to a side way over the cap, and 2013 we was robbed.) And he gave us the greatest coaching performance and biggest winning margin in the history of the game, while keeping the cheating Scum to a big fat zero. If we had of been offered 2006-2011 with full knowledge of what Des was going to do when we were the Northern Eagles, every single one of us would have been over the moon. I guess I just came to the realisation, that for all my bitterness and b1tching, Des Hasler will always have done WAAAAAY more for the Manly Sea Eagles than I ever will, even if I had one thousand lifetimes to try and catch up with him. So the continual he’s a traitor, and I’m going to stomp my feet while jumping up and down if he ever comes back to the club, seems a little ridiculous.

so I’m assuming everyone is aware of the situation at the bulldogs in the aftermath of Dessie the dog Hasler. In which I think every bulldog player is practically for sale. This couldn’t come at a better time for us, considering the salary cap restrictions. I’m hoping were looking to raid their stocks and try and make up that 330k in value. Considering it’s a fire sale what positions or players do you think would be good additions? For me, Faitala mariner and Renouf To’omaga would be good bargain buys for the club if possible. Side note, Does anyone know if remi Smith is still at the dogs?

Des Hasler"s tenure and association with Manly has been discussed and received a range of opinions for quite some time now but reading some of the posts here recently , there does seem to be some slightly less then accurate and measured perspective with some of them . Des started his coaching career with Manly and to his credit with a very ambitious and determined mindset and from about 2005 with a general club strategy and assisted with Max Delmerge financial input to recruit a couple of quality signings in approaching seasons to at least try to get some better results . This did pay dividends by getting the right type of players, retaining some of the best juniors in the club"s history and some choice and astute budget buys who were progressively developed very well . Point being is that no doubt Des did have some proven coaching abilities but can certainly not take all of the credit for the success of those times and the recruitment and retention of the type of player who where mainly responsible for those successes . Incidentally to the best of my knowledge there were no back ended deals for Manly players in 2008 . only Gifty in 2011 but by 2013 both Gifty and Chock and big scale back enders which was starting to cause problems . So perfectly understandable for the then Manly board wishing to then try to apply some restrictions on Des for his short term and opportunistic attitude at that time . After the 2011 G F win , Des still had one more year to run on his contract , and whatever the politics or the issues at the time and irrespective of Greenberg"s grubby involvement on behalf of the Bulldogs , Des "s subsequent conduct then was quite disgraceful and reprehensible in regard to showing some basic respect and non harmful attitudes to the Manly club .. Anyway i can only say that Mark from Brisbane"s version and recall of events concerning Des is really closer to the mark [ no pun intended ] and personally also hope that Des will never be welcomed back to the club in any capacity , He again had his opportunity to leave the club on good terms and with much deserved goodwill and he simply blew it and it is hardly going to be Manly "s best interests to have him back .. Is he still capable of being a competent head coach , maybe , maybe not , but i am sure that he can offer nothing more in particular that would improve Manly "s present coaching situation

Makes me more than comfortable paying what we do for DCE when you hear Foran is on 1mil a year

Manly takes players off the market with illegal TPA's .... Media attack the unfairness of removing players and not allowing other clubs to make a play for the players.

Dogs take players off the market with over budgeted salary cap... Media do nothing.

The media agenda for our club is so blatant it's incredible.

The dogs have got themselves in to such a bad position that they can't get a 30man squad without releasing players on big money...

If that's not taking players off the market and not giving other clubs a chance of securing those players (exactly what Manly has been abused about) then I don't know what is.
Bulldogs and maybe a couple of other clubs based their 2018 rosters on the expectation or anticipation or whatever that the Salary cap would be in excess of 10 mil dollars post 2018 . Whether there were elements in the N R L pushing this agenda or just some misguided club outlook but i certainly have no sympathy for their present predicament and especially in regard to Des "s self interested and selfish practice with back ended deals over the past couple of season . Some of Manly "s administration practices over recent seasons may have not been perfect or ideal but compared with the Bull Dogs and the Eels for instance and some others , i would say that they would rate quite well .

just one thing Terry, Manly has a capital M .... as you were

Really only interested in players they wouldn’t be willing to release or we’d have to pay too much of their freight

In order of preference:

Jackson
Klemmer
Mariner

Don't forget mate, we are pretty full in quality (when full strength). Not sure if it's blue chips we need anymore - It's probably more like depth players (but more importantly, retention):

Projected Team next Season:
01. Tom Trbojevic (21)
02. Jorge Taufua (26)
03. Brian Kelly (21)
04. Dylan Walker (23)
05. Moses Suli (19)
06. Trent Hodkinson (29)
07. Daly Cherry-Evans (29)
08. Addin Fonua-Blake (22)
09. Apisai Koroisou (25)
10. Marty Taupau (28)
11. Joel Thompson (29)
12. Curtis Sironen (24)
13. Jake Trbojevic (24)

14. Tom Wright (20)
15. Kelepi Tanginoa (24)
16. Taniela Paseka (20)
17. Shaun Lane (23)

SUCH a young team, and I see so much potential there. The best part, is we should be trying to keep them together. Also, Tom Wright will get experience if / when Hodko comes off. Helps both those boys, with a long term view of making Wright permanent 5/8.

This team could be together (for the most part) for a very long time, if they work really hard and succeed.

I'm a big fan of Mariner - think he's going to be a long term good player. But note as was posted earlier he's probably on low wages now and so wouldn't free up much cap space for the Bulldogs so is unlikely.

I still think the Morris boys have a bit of gas left in the tank. Usually I am dead against the idea signing old outside backs with miles on the clock....but they may be exceptions...great tough footballers those 2.

This is what sucks about us being so financially hamstrung - we are not in any position to take advantage of this so I doubt we'll get anyone.

Isn't this thread against the new terms and conditions? Even though every day there are new threads that talk about the same thing?
