Agreed, The only place where all errors are close to equal are on stat sheetsAlso have to consider where errors were made...
Not too sure how error-prone Kelpie was, but where & timing of them...
My oh my
Schoupp is an interesting one.May as well give Schoupp a crack on an edge now that the Bateman chapter or saga has apparently come to a conclusion .
Probably no different [ Schoupp] in playing mode and general ability wise then a heap of other previous outside backs who have been able to transition quite successfully or reasonably successfully to the backrow .
But then, really thought that Parker would be able to go O K there as well and obviously did not work out that well at all .
Still like the athleticism factor with Chee Kam , Burbo not that far off being a real asset on an edge , the young Dogs and Cowboys additions .
If it did come down to trading an existing well credentialed player for Bateman , would have been not keen on that option .
Anyway , still more concerned on the 9 and 13 required improved roles and some confirmation that Bully and Talau have had their contracts extended .
Also getting more out of Alioia and even though he is on less money and deserves a lot of credit for his earlier vigorous efforts before his fade out , Brown ,as maybe will still need a bit of effective cover at 13
Of all the current members of our squad who could be an NRL-ready smoky for the second row spot, Patolo is a likely candidate. I'm also keen to see how Burbo goes after one more preseason, if our physios can get his training right to get a bit more power into his game, he could be a real chance too. From the Mole, so take with a grain of salt:
Sea Eagles reject Bateman
Manly were keen to add English international John Bateman to their ranks - especially as the Tigers were happy to pay a big slice of his wages.
But ultimately his age - Bateman turned 31 recently - counted against the busy second-rower.
The Sea Eagles are building a good young squad and would have had to cut one of their promising up-and-comers to accommodate a player nearing the end of his career.
So Manly reluctantly said 'thanks but no thanks' to the British international, who played some good footy for the Tigers last year but is no longer part of Benji Marshall's plans.
It's not all over for Bateman though - his management has at least one other NRL club keen on his services.
^ Given this has happened right after pre-season began, someone must be impressing. Indicates the club having more interest in some of the younger guys. Don't know who, but my money's on Patolo.
The Tigers are going to be forced to pay a very high percentage of his wage to get rid of him, eventually they will hit a price where the club that picks him up will be getting an absolute bargain. So the number of non manly other clubs expressing an interest in Bateman has very quickly gone from two down to one.
Wonder if they'll try and offload Latu as well, the hard part is finding a willing suitor to pay only half the contract money with the Tige's making up the rest. The Tigers are going to be forced to pay a very high percentage of his wage to get rid of him, eventually they will hit a price where the club that picks him up will be getting an absolute bargain.
The rumour was probably put out by Wests in an attempt to force Manly to panic sign him (we had our fingers burnt with Schu in similar circumstances) Non of the journos seem to be naming other clubs so I would guess the interest is zero. I'm not too fussed if we sign him or not but if we do we want him as cheaply as possible. So the number of non manly other clubs expressing an interest in Bateman has very quickly gone from two down to one.
Souths have been mentioned today Bateman and Lodge not to sure if they can get bothThe rumour was probably put out by Wests in an attempt to force Manly to panic sign him (we had our fingers burnt with Schu in similar circumstances) Non of the journos seem to be naming other clubs so I would guess the interest is zero. You dont think Talau improved 2024?All these castoff average players we sign like Tevanga, Patolo, Chee Kam , Paulo, Waddell , Talau ,Condon just end up being no different to where they came from. Yet a club like Storm sign players like this and turn them into premiership contenders. It's not so much the cattle these days but the quality of the feed to be a top NRL club.
It's a bit like panning for gold, every now and then you come up with a decent sized nugget worth hanging on to.All these castoff average players we sign like Tevanga, Patolo, Chee Kam , Paulo, Waddell , Talau ,Condon just end up being no different to where they came from. What they also have is very good third party corporate sponsorship that lets them sign players to lower salaries under the cap, I am envious of this as we can’t seem to get that third party corporate sponsorship for manly players.Very true Mick
But I reckon it's more than the Storm system, though I personally rate that also top shelf.
The Storm create a great "spine" of not just players, but leaders.....and added to this a few big no frills hard forwards who simply do a job and that recipe, imo makes those lesser name players shine.
But here's the main part - that Special 4 players at 1 - 6 - 7 and 9 are drilled into being not only great players, but leaders.
Watch them constantly lifting those around them and giving directions on the field.
Manly has some great players, but fall way short in leadership....I mean Turbo and DCE are great players in their own right, but have nowhere near the impact of the Storm leaders and I don't care what sport, having leadership will always create a better "team mentally" and lift those lessor lights to far greater levels.
This along with the dominant 9's in the comp in recent memory, are their strongest assets.
What’s wrong with Talau? What’s wrong with Patolo? All these castoff average players we sign like Tevanga, Patolo, Chee Kam , Paulo, Waddell , Talau ,Condon just end up being no different to where they came from. Myers and Keppie aren’t first graders… Lodge is a problem for culture. The same could be said for Bateman.I'll be surprised if Souths dont find a way to Sqeeze both Lodge and Bateman into their side.
And all of a sudden their list actually looks balanced, youth & experience, big & quick.
Additions Kind of like the Manly team that could have been.
Myers
Schuster.
Humphries.
Keppie.
Lodge.
Bateman.
Penn just dosent find a way.
I'd have kept Humphries, Schuster was on too much coin for a player as inconsistent as he is.Myers and Keppie aren’t first graders… Lodge is a problem for culture. The same could be said for Bateman.
Schuster and Humphries id like to still have.
