AMID fears of a drawn-out court case, Manly and Trent Barrett are now close to resolving their ugly six-month imbroglio — and it could happen as early as Friday.

The development comes as Manly enjoy a 15 per cent spike in memberships compared to the same time last year based on coach Des Hasler’s arrival.

Sea Eagles co-owner Scott Penn had been highly reluctant to pay out Barrett, who offered his 12 months notice in July.

It would appear, though, that a deal has now been struck after the board met on Wednesday to finalise a settlement agreement.

More details are likely to emerge over the next 24 hours.

Barrett is yet to return to Manly’s Narrabeen headquarters since his end-of-season holiday finished.

The two parties have been exchanging legal letters constantly over the past week to try and resolve the matter.

Barrett’s short era at Brookvale is now over. How successful that was depends on who you listen to around Manly.

Hasler was becoming increasingly frustrated at the possibility Barrett would remain at club in some capacity.

The payout amount of Barrett remains unknown but could be around $300,000. It’s understood he has been paid out the remainder of his notice period, which ends in July 2019.

Meanwhile, Manly have 7012 members as of Friday — a sharp increase on this time last year.

More than 300 fans renewed memberships within a few hours of Hasler’s announcement. And the renewals have just kept coming.

One official said: “The phones have been going crazy.”

There have been increases in young fans and those aged 18 to 29.

Officials claim members and fans are responding to having another coach with Manly DNA.

Hasler has made a strong point of wanting the club to engage with fans and the local community.

Manly players will return to training from their mandatory break on Monday.

There was speculation on Thursday that Sea Eagles centre Brian Kelly could seek a release. He has been linked to Wests Tigers but is likely to sign with his former club the Gold Coast.

Manly hadn’t officially released Kelly as of Thursday night but there was a feeling the club wouldn’t prevent him from leaving.

The Sea Eagles have a ready-made replacement should Kelly leave in rising star Tevita Funa.

Former Roosters and Newcastle player Brendan Elliot has also joined the Sea Eagles.

Manly’s odds for next year’s title have tightened since Hasler’s announcement.

Glad the club has nearly dealt with that ridiculous impasse

What's the good word in kelly the wheel?

What you heard from your source or what's in this article you posted?

Really don't want to lose him

Heard nothing but haven’t asked either

Very sad to lose Kelly if true, and to think I was watching him sign a resigning contract rather than what I thought to be a re-signing contract is very annoying. Anyways, life goes on and talk of manly having faith in this Funa kid is great news as well. Wingers wingers wingers. Brendon Elliot is a wolfman under the radar type player that’s done a simple job pretty good for a while. Looked very promising at the Roosters, I would’ve wanted him at the time, then knights slowed his progress, reckon he may move his way into the side at some point in the season after an injury and surprise, locking in a spot for till at least next year. May have speed?

Does Funa have speed? Looks like a strong player, and appears a little lanky which is a good sign

Still really think we should go after Will Hoppa

Depending on who you believe (none of them?) Kelly either signed a contract extension or asked for a release today. Or both.
Either he is bipolar or the RL media is.

I give up. Seriously. Our club is #ucked. 2018 looks to be the year we find all of our best up and comers and just **** em off.

Lane, Kelly, AFB.

The club only spent about 3 years on each of them, taking them from mistake riddled juniors struggling, to the NRLs next best thing.

Might as well as add Hastings and Amone to the list.

If your at Man and your any good, let it be known U can just #uck off.

I couldn't give a toss who DES gets in now. They might as well be **** like Foz, he'll fit right in.

Tom Alone has just re-signed with Blacktown mate. So will still be in the system. If it’s true and Brian is looking to return closer to home in Ballina, it’s going to be a hard task keeping him here.

Who is actually believing this AFB thing. Sure he may of asked for a release earlier when we were looking to have Cartwright as coach but we are fine!

Imo the AFB thing is a massive beat up. Read they way they word the articles carefully. There is absoulty nothing in there to suggest that any current events or evidence of him leaving have occurred.
They said he was offside about the coaching circle but that's about it and COULD be a good replacement for Klemmer. Des is a massive upgrade on Baz anyway.

What does Wayne Cousins do all day?

How about he comes up with some talking points about the coaching situation so that people like Steve Menzies ( on tonight’s 7 News), know what to say?

Instead, Menzies, a great player who should have learnt a thing or two after 25 years in the public eye, comes across as a complete amateur.

Knights have been watching him for a while but when Klemmer got their interest i wasn't worried anymore about losing AFB.

We are very lucky to have him and hoping the club making his management know he is part of their long term plans

'Just pay him out': Manly star's plea to end Barrett farce
by Adrian Proszenko SMH 2nd Nov 2018

Manly star Jake Trbojevic has implored the club to pay out Trent Barrett, believing it would be "childish" to expect the departing coach to serve out his term in a lesser role.

Sea Eagles players will begin their preseason from next week, raising the prospect of Barrett and his successor, Des Hasler, both being on the training paddock when they arrive. Barrett handed in his 12-month notice period last July, but the the Manly hierarchy are reluctant to pay him out and have threatened to redeploy him into a lesser role.
